My Journey to ordering a Model X

May I suggest, after you get your X and 3. If you still have room in your garage, keep the 3 series. I still miss my 2004 330ci 6 speed. That was such a blast to drive.
I am seriously contemplating it.. The plan now is to replace the 3 series with the X as wife cannot drive the stick shift. Model 3 will replace the MDX so we will get back to one small car and one SUV mode. What worries me is the ongoing maintenance costs on top of the new car payments. Just got clutch changed and upgraded the differential which makes the car go zoom even in 5th gear. I will have to park the 3 on the driveway / street and we have had some car break-ins in our neighborhood in the recent past. Tough decision - am going back and forth on it.

Tough one. Same problem here, wife doesn't drive stick too, and it just was getting too old. At least you're able to replace it with a Tesla! Makes it much more palatable. I switched into an automatic X5 for the kids. Sigh...

After I test drove the X I started noticing how noisy my car was and how many rattles it has. The windshield seems small and my back now thinks that getting in and out is a pain :)

I'm looking forward to trying one out. Our sales guy says we should be getting the Xs to test drive here in June/July. Until then I get to drive my X5, and the Model S... when my wife let's me!;)

Congrats!

We have rear facing twin toddlers. Falcon wing doors are the best thing ever. I've gotten a few "woowwws" out of one of them when the door opens and they look up at the sky. So much room for food and diaper bags in front of the seats too. Not much room for the driver/passenger to recline, but you're not going to get that in any vehicle with rear facing car seats.

Nice. I saw a few posts where people had gotten frustrated with the wait times on X and have switched to the S. Thought I was the lone genius (or fool :) ). Good to have company!

I actually don't mind waiting, my lease ends by the end of this year, so I'm not in a rush, but my mom will come to visit in Jun, so definitely hope I can get the car around Jun, Jul.

Did they give you a delivery date yet? Given the lower VIN and the P I would have thought you would have your X by now.
Literally just days away at this point. Omg, you have no idea :D!! My 'vegan interior' as my wife calls it, using the proper term, of course, and my no PUP set me back quite a ways, appearantly. Based on events as they have recently unfolded, I guess it all worked out in my favor. I'll just imagine Elon was in his sleeping bag right next to mine a few weeks ago. o_OSeriously. Aaaanyway... waiting on "a couple of trim parts". I won't keep it a secret. ML

@Infinite and @halg, Thanks for the offer! And halg, enjoy!

Unfortunately due to carrying two mortgages, we have agreed put a moratorium on any travel plans, purchases or what not. It actually may work out for us to wait for the X until June/July to test drive. Hopefully we'll be able to get rid of one of the mortgages by then. My wife keeps me in check, which is a good thing. I'd be too willing and happy to spend on too many things! :)

Thanks for sharing the story. I always feel neglected by car dealers when I walked in unless I came in with the 911 Turbo. And we are ready to order the Model X today. The Dublin store was great as it is so close to home now.

The wait is finally over. Got our Shiny Metallic Blue X yesterday (06/30) :D:D:D:D:D

Just wanted to share some initial impressions from first 60 odd miles of driving.

The GOOD:
1. The car is totally worthy of falling in love. I fell in love when I first test drove it - fell in love again. My wife, on the the other hand did not test drive the car before and she was not impressed with my exuberance during the wait time. Before we left home she said she loves her Acura a lot and she will keep driving that and I should not ask / force her to drive the X. I smiled and said yes. During the delivery experience she sat in the second row while I was in the driver's seat getting the delivery experience she got all excited and wanted to get to be the one to be in the drivers seat. So we traded places. The delivery specialist we got was super awesome. She told him that she had never driven the car before and he immediately offered to go on a test drive to get her familiarized with the car. This gave me a chance to sit in the back seats ( more on that experience later). She was like a kid in candy store once she got over her initial trepidation. Even after multiple proclamations from her that she would never use Autopilot prior to yesterday, she went ahead and tried it and came away super impressed. She is in love with the car so much so that she left the Acura to me while she has taken the X to work today. I can foresee some deep negotiations happening on who gets to take the X in future ;). My 3 yr old's first response was "This is magic" :D Her second sentence was "Daddy, why did you get the magic car, did you get it for me?" Precious!!! Now she is gotten it into her head that since the car has wings it needs to fly and she keeps asking me to make it fly.

2. The fit and finish - Even though I had print outs of the checklist from this forum I did not really go through it. It was impossible to be clinical about the delivery process when you are so excited. However, I had memorized the key areas to look for and made sure I inspected them. Alignment all around was spot on. Minor seal protrusion on top for FWD which the DS said is normal. It didn't bother me much.

3. Seats - I am glad we went with 6 seats instead of 7. I am 5' 11 and I found the last row to be the most comfortable to sit in when I stretch my legs out in the middle opening. If I made the second row seatbacks straight I could fit my legs within the seat walls without crushing my knees (barely). If I moved the second row seat a little forward to accomodate my legs then I got the seat not latched warning. But if we are going on long trips and if DW is driving then I would sit in the last seat with legs stretched. With an airplane neck pillow I can even have a nice nap there. Nothing to write home about the second row seats expect that they were decent and cleaning mess made by my kids in the first minute they were in the car a breeze with the mono-post design.

4. Doors - Have been deliberately and sometimes not closing and opening all the doors in various ways. So far so good. Even when I manually did not close properly (due to fear of closing too hard) the mechanics pulled the door in properly and latched. Auto-present seems to be able to sense obstacles (walls and door in garage) and open accordingly. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the front doors stopped when I accidentaly pressed the brake while the FWD was closing. It seems like a SW update was done to prevent the collision that other have reported. The screen did some weird graphic thing with red proximity warning on the front door path, stopped the door for a brief moment and when the FWD closed resumed to close. It all happened so fast before I had a "Oh Sh##" response to stepping on the brake while FWD was closing.

5. Driving - Autopilot = awesome. Also 90D is plenty power to pass or show-off. Stepping on the pedal pushes you in the seat. Glad didn't get seduced to spend an extra $30K.

The NOT SO GOOD:
1. Wind noise - The moment we got on the freeway and were over 50mph the wind noise became loud. It seems to be coming from all over as if surround sound. Our MDX is quieter. Will keep monitoring to see if this warrants a SC visit.

2. FWD - not fully opening in the garage even though there are no obstacles on the side or top. Have raised the garage railings to 98" and have Jackshaft opener. Have to figure / fix this one. It opens fully outside but does umbrella mode inside the garage. Bumped my head in the morning while cleaning the car. :(

Also, I think the firmware version is older as it still shows umbrella mode as an option for FWD on the screen.

Will add more observations once I get to spend more time. Have a couple of day trips planned for the long weekend so will have some updates.

First, congrats on delivery, and glad you're enjoying it.

You can "override" the falcon wing limited open in your garage to have them open all the way up. Once you do, there will be a selection to always open fully in that location. Select that, and your garage woes are over.

Thanks @ohmman.

How do I override? I didn't see the controls on the touchscreen. Should I just manually push it up?

I'm curious, is there an opposite setting?

I'm expecting I'll actually want it in umbrella mode in the garage to avoid the order-of-opening issue with my garage door, unless I do some serious re-arranging.

I've been losing sleep thinking about what happens if someone opens the garage door while the FaWD are up :(

I expect they'll extend fully with the garage door closed, but go umbrella with it open. I have a few months before I'll know for sure though.
