The price for these on the Tesla store is outrageous. Here in Australia, EVERYTHING is far more expensive than the USA and not just because of the exchange rate. The rack from Tesla is just over $600 Australian. I went to a specialist roof rack place today, and after a lot of mucking around came up with a hybrid mount system made by a Whisbar subsidiary and genuine Whispbar bars, PLUS a genuine frame mount cycle carrier for a TOTAL of $655.35 Australian. The carrier alone is $280 Australian.

Great thread. I'm interested in the wind noise of just the crossbars with the pano roof OPEN. I get my Model S in a few days and am on the fence about a rack vs. using foam blocks to carry my paddleboard 1-2 times/week to the beach. I have a Thule aeroblade rack on my GTI and it renders the moonroof useless due to the wind noise when you open it. Since I don't have my car, yet, I can't tell where exactly the bars will be in relation to the roof when open. I'd like to order the rack ahead of time so I'm looking for real world experiences.

Thanks a ton!

I took my rack off a few days after having it on due to the loud wind noise and big increase in wh/mi. They are easy enough to take on and off as desired so I figured whenever I actually need to use them I'll put them on but otherwise not good for daily commuting.

It's pretty noticeable, especially at highway speeds. Heck, it's noticeable even when the pano roof is closed. I second yobigd20's statement that the roof rack is very easy to put on and take off; after a few times, you'll have it down to five minutes. But if you want the pano open with your paddleboard on racks, expect quite a bit of noise. I'm not sure, decibel-wise, what the difference would be with the paddleboard by itself on foam blocks.

I have managed to reduce wind noise of the rack without objects on it using custom made socks for the feet. Because the feet are open on the inside they make some noise. I still can't believe Whisbar went to all the trouble to make their bars so quiet and did such a crappy job on the feet. If there is any interest from members in these silencing socks then let me know.

pic?

Instead of a sock, what about an insert to snap into place once it's mounted? I bet I could design and 3D print out some covers for this area. That does look like it would make a bunch of noise. For the price you pay for them, that's not ideal.

That would be a quick and easy solution. However, it may not eliminate all of the noise as it would not smooth over all of the seems and crevices. It could be worth a try though.

I'll try and post pics of my solution in the next couple of days. My rack is not on right now.

Here is a pic of my "silencing sock" for the Tesla Whisbar rack. This is a prototype and a final version would have black thread. Also one side is longer than the other as I wasn't sure if the shorter sock would stay put, but both did over the winter.

Thanks for the pics.

Can you tell me if the racks are fairly level in a fore and aft direction? For skis it won't matter much, but when I cartop my 26-foot single racing scull it would be disadvantageous to have the front a lot higher than the back.
