Octopus Energy Saving Sessions

Does anyone know how the Octopus ”Power Hour” energy saving sessions are actually calculated?

I’ve taken part in all of them, but the results just seem totally random.

I’ve had sessions where we’ve switched off as much as we can and gone out, only to be told that we didn’t manage to save anything.

Some sessions, we’ve made very small savings, Including one where virtually everything was switched off and the whole family was in another country.

One session I forgot it was happening despite signing up, only to be told I’d managed to save 93% of my normal usage and be credited with over £16 off!

I’ll continue to sign up for them and don’t really do it expecting to save much as we are already quite energy efficient. It all just seems so random.

How do you normally use 9.8kWh in 30 minutes ?

I believe maths are a bit wrong...

10 kwh in 30 minutes is 20 kwh load ... for what?

industrial scale weed greenhouse?

Believe me, he's got the means to do that... big batteries which can dump to the grid at 20kW.

Neither did I! - but at least they can say they did one in March to meet the Jan–Mar timeframe given.

There were actually 13 last time around in 2022–23.

This evening’s Saving Session targeting 18:00–18:30 again for a paltry 50 MW (Test event for all providers, like yesterday).

Must be a Thursday vs Friday experiment of some kind.

I'll keep an eye out for it in the app. I need to make up for my battery being slow to switch between Charge/Discharge and the sessions where I didnt realise I could export

What a muppet! I set everything up last night and then forgot to switch the PW over to Export Everything . Ah well at least it was only a little one I missed out on!

Two in quick succession- I thinking it’s a test of the systems ability to recover. I.e people offset demand, will they be fatigued, will batteries be recharged.

Whereas in reality I charged up my PW from 19:43 until 22:15 then had it discharge again from 23:30 until 02:30 for an extra £1.97 win, then charge up again from 02:30 until 05:30 so sunshine can be exported during daylight Though apparently I’m in the 2% club.

Unfortunately Octopus Energy were not successful in their 30 MW for £900/MWh bid this time.

So those providers taking part today are:

• CUB (UK) Ltd
• EDF Energy Customers Limited
• Engine Power Limited
• Infinis Limited

56 MW was procured.

Unless Octopus feel like doing something themselves under OctoPlus scheme just so that customers don't feel left out. Suspect not, will likely only do that when there is genuine benefit to doing so, rather than arbitrary testing of DFS.
