Can an avid DIYer perform the LTE upgrade in a model S?

Yes, I have done these on both our cars.

There is a caveat, however. You need a new SIM from Tesla to use LTE, as well as the LTE daughterboard. The old SIMs that ship with the cars with 3G only run 3G, even if you swap out to install the LTE daughterboard. Alternatively, you can also run a different carrier (but you need access to the diagnostic mode to change the IMEI settings, etc. so the non-Tesla SIM can be used.

The process requires a complete disassembly of the dash to pull out the 17" MCU, and then you have to take the MCU apart to get to the daughtercard.
