Petition to demand "camera on top, media player on bottom" be retained in UI

I know for a fact that they watch this forum. From personal experience. I'll just leave it at that.

Same here. I've been contacted by Tesla twice on two different issues I've posted about on TMC.

I'm convinced v9 was written by a bunch of kids w/Model 3's

Not even that. It is a bunch of kids, but from behind a computer monitor without actually driving the cars in the real world. To them, the bottom of the screen is just as good as the top. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Of course, I'm with the rest of you that this is a phenomenal step backwards in user interface, user experience, safety, and usability. In every major firmware version update, Tesla has removed much-loved UI features, and changed things for the worse. I think this V9 update is the worst-of-the-worst updates so far. The pure arrogance within Tesla to think they can just dictate what's best for hundreds of thousands of users/drivers is off the charts.

Bring back USER CHOICE! That's it. Sure, add new features and UI designs, but ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS allow the users to choose which features they want and how they want to configure and use the software. There is NO SINGLE SOLUTION that will work for everyone. But Tesla being Tesla, what they say and do is best for everyone. NOT.

For me, I also always have the camera on top -- but that's because I have the Front Camera Switch Kit so I can see curbs and obstacles in front of me when parking. The rear view camera only turns on when the car is in reverse. But now, with V9, I'm going to have to manually bring up the front camera EVERY SINGLE TIME I park.. since I can no longer have two apps in view, like WAZE in the browser or the media player, or the energy graph, etc. It's now two clicks and diverting my attention away from actually driving to get the view I need RIGHT NOW. What a clustersuck UI this is.

And it bears repeating again 90%+ of driving is within 25 miles of home. Most people (but not all, are you listening Tesla?) hardly ever need the maps when driving around town. So why make this mandatory 100% of the time?

If the idea is to have Nav up when FSD is engaged, fine, then do that ONLY when FSD is engaged. Why torture us with a UI that won't be used or implemented for several years to come?

Signed the petition and will be emailing Tesla later today.

I'm convinced v9 was written by a bunch of kids w/Model 3's who never spent more than 10mins in an S/X and didn't realized there are fundamental differences in the screens and how they are used by many owners.
I don't know if you've ever seen the show Silicon Valley, but there's an episode where they release their software for testing. The engineers are excited about it and love the way it does certain things. The people that just interact with the UI and have no idea what's going on behind the scenes think the app is awful. TL;DR, developers don't have the end user's perspective, and that makes things suck.

The Camera is NOT and APP. It is a safety feature. It is fundamental.

To see the camera, you need to tap a small button to get to it, then the Camera "App" which takes your eye further from the road even longer.

Any time you use an app the camera disappears. Change a station, etc.

I have been a Tesla S and X owner for 5 years and been one of your biggest supporters. I have shown my S or X at several hundred events. I have spent 100 of hours helping your sales reps and delivery specialists at end of qtr pushes and events. Even this next week my X is scheduled to be loaned to the local utility for 4 days to be included in an international auto show.

I have never had a complaint like this before.

The Camera is NOT and APP. It is a safety feature.

As you have posted across multiple threads. It is a safety issue to have the camera on at all times. Otherwise all the other car manufactures that have rear cameras would allow it.

As a developer, I can tell you this is very true. In fact, I've been on a project where the Subject Matter Experts worked with the UI people and the server people, hashed stuff out for months, and came up with a great piece of software. We all agreed. When users saw the end product, they refused to even try it, universally, across the board. "That will be useless to me."

Very much agree with @kavyboy and @trm2 about the disconnect between developers and end-users. Worked on a UI overhaul with a UX company that kept stating the focus needs to be on the 80% of functionality that 80% of users interact with the most: essentially, focus where people will use it.

Tesla needs to explain more beyond the unification with M3 for the V9 dev choices.

I live in a small city where most drivers could probably draw a map of...i've used Nav maybe twice in the past year just for fun. For the last few days i've had to explain to people who have been in my car with me why the Navigation was on..."b/c" i can't turn it off" of course haha!

Just look at all those acres of farmland surrounding our tiny city. Extremely valuable information to display on my massive screen.

This is laughable.

Camera on top
Media on bottom
and allow me to customize it please! I would pay to get the old UI back

All I read about everywhere are the horrors of AI snooping on us to predict our behavior.

In advance of v9, there's no reason why Tesla couldn't have known the exact statistics of every Tesla driver's Nav use, Rear Camera position, keeping two apps on-screen simultaneously, etc, which would have clearly predicted the outrage over v9.

In other words - where the hell is the snooping AI when we want to be snooped on?

What I sent (yes, perhaps I could have worded it better, still rather upset about it):
Based on information provided by Tesla I do not wish to receive software version 9 on my vehicle. I find the changes unacceptable as they degrade the usability, and capabilities of the vehicle. Please put it on your "do not upgrade" list. Thank you!

What I got in response two days later:
Thank you for contacting Tesla! I apologize but we do not have a do not upgrade list, you can continue to refuse to update it from your screen as that would be the only possible option. If your vehicle needs to be serviced in the future, it will be possible that the service center will update it for you as it may be necessary to continue support on the vehicle.

Based on the post by @Knightowl earlier saying that tesla pulled the downloaded release/update notification from the car, this response appears false.

a PSA bump...

anybody late to the thread, please contact Tesla with your concerns and request they bring back the ability to display ANY two apps of your choosing on the split 17" screen, via any/all of the following methods:

- send a message using the executive escalation widget on your MyTesla page on the Tesla website
- send an email to [email protected]
- send a tweet to @elonmusk
- sign the petition:
Update:

I made a petition on Change.org

Bring back Dual App View!

Count me in as well.

I absolutely hate this update, which is clearly designed without any regard to classic MS owners.

I hate having every feature as an accessory to the map, which I rarely use. I've lived in Chicago for 10 years and don't need help getting around on a daily basis. I want my camera on top and my music on the bottom.

I hate having the control buttons at the bottom, forcing me to divert my eyes even further (and longer) from the road.

Absolutely horrible. Zero functional gains by this update. In nearly 6y of owning this car, this is the worst thing Tesla has done to affect my daily driving. I absolutely regret having updating voluntarily.

Hate it. Hate. It.
