Portable refrigerators for Model Y

I have the same concerns, that heat has to go somewhere. My 12 volt Dometic fits nicely in the back of my Y, but if I ever wanted to put it in the sub-trunk, I would probably cut a piece of MDF as a replacement sub-trunk cover, and them drill enough holes in it to provide some ventilation.
We have had no issues propping up the sub trunk cover with the model we bought.

Those of you that put your powered coolers in the sub-trunk, have you considered the lack of air flow in there? I would think the unit would get hot not being able to turn the air over and it would shorten the life of the compressor.

Been using mine for almost 2 years now without any issue with heat even in the middle of summer. I have 7 seater so the sub trunk cover has openings on both sides. I find that's enough ventilation.

Thanks everyone for a detailed thread. Just wanted to pitch in my two cents as there is a fridge/freezer combo that also fits the trunk of the Model Y. This is the 32qt AcoPower Lioncooler X30 with the two wheels (2 hex) and handle removed (4 philips). It fits perfectly, the lid is flushed, and it vents on the right side and rear. I think this might be the largest capacity that you can fit in the sub trunk as far as I can tell.

WARNING: Do not buy this cooler if you have a 5 seater Model Y. The cooler is too tall by about an inch and the subtrunk cover will sit on the cooler instead of on the surrounding risers. I'm assuming it worked for the original poster because on closer inspection he seems to have a 7 seater with a different subtrunk or associated cover.

Check out the youtube channel for HoboTech. He covers a lot of DC related stuff, Solar generators, invertors, batteries, DC battery powered HVAC units, DC battery dual zone frigs.

Not all of it might fit where you want it but some of these DC frig's blow away others in terms of cooling performance, efficiency, build quality, features, waterproofing ratings for outdoor use, warranty.

But if all you care about is size maybe skip his channel.

I use the Makita DCW180Z myself. Perfectly working on 1 or 2 batteries, car dc power something between 12 and 26 volt or mains power via the supplied adapter to 120-240 volt

Link to product please 😊

The thing looks amazing and I saw on Facebook they answered some questions about the tight fit and ventilation and they replied that it was engineered with that in mind and the clearance was acceptable.

The problem I see is that I think the 12v in the Model Y shuts off when the car goes to sleep… possibly that can be avoided if climate is set to stay on, but I haven’t researched that much.

Edit: Apparently Camp Mode solves that issue.

Just using sentry works too.

There is another thread here:

I bought the one from Costco. It's cheap and seems to work well so far.

That’s not powered though, right?

The one I linked claims it can do subzero ( Fahrenheit) temperatures!

First time poster. I bought this little guy for some road trips. Freezes and cools. I leave on Sentry mode to keep the 12\16v outlets running. Also makes for a nice center console in the back seats. Will most likely recover it in black alcatera to blend in better. I used double-sided velcro used for wrapping wires and hoses to grab the carpet down from the trunk, over the seat, and to the carpet in the footwell. The velcro is fuzzy-side up. Industrial velcro is stuck to the underside of the cooler(hook side). Also incuded tear-down pics. Was curious on the compressor design.

There are some out there that can be configured with one just the one cavity or you can split into two and the best part is each can have its own temp. I’m sure it can’t be to wildly different but depending on what you’re bringing it could be helpful. And it’s smart enough to know you removed the divider.

And since some are also battery powered some new models also have direct solar input so you can keep it topped offed and still cooling when not plugged into the car.

Loads of fancy options if you look enough.

The photo seems to show it sitting a few inches above.

This could be an intentional design (flaw?) to due to design limitations of components, to maximize size without being extreme, or to make sure you don’t close cover and allow necessary venting.

It contradicts other photos of the fridge sitting flush, so I'm wondering if the reddit poster's 5 seater Model Y, being made in China, has a smaller subtrunk.

From the video on this aliexpress page (Link), the fridge has an interesting/smart design where it vents out the back when the cover is on. The 5 seat subtrunk cover leaves a gap all along its rear by design, so taking advantage of that could work really well.
