Great pics, I think I will give it a try. Valentine 1G2 units are on back order so will have to wait.
Thanks for the mount bracket and wire link from Amazon.

One more question: When you leave the car, do you have to unplug the 12v socket? I was wondering if still plugged in, is the battery discharging until unplugged?
Nope. It powers off when the car goes to sleep. That was a concern of mine as well. When you open the door to go somewhere, it automatically turns back on. Exactly how you want it to be.

Valentine One Gen 2. Pair it with the V1 driver app on your phone and it is a great experience. Rarely makes any noise unless there's actually a cop. I mounted on the mirror using a blend mount. BlendMount Radar Detector Mounts| Custom Aluminum Mounts

Both items are expensive but it is definitely a scenario where you get what you pay for. I had a cheaper Escort Passport 8500 and got 2 tickets while I owned it, both times I had it in the car. Once a cop literally laughed at me because it wasn't going off until he was standing next to the window writing me a ticket.

You can hardwire the detector down the A pillar and splice into the 12v switchable source in the driver's footwell. When you turn it in just cut the wire or remove it at the splice.
I'm a big fan of the V1, and may finally upgrade to the Gen 2 now. I have kept mine mounted high behind the mirror on my Audi RS3 using the suction cups and left it there. It was barely visible from the outside of the car, and was less intrusive than the blendmounts. Also have the remote display to mount on the dash for better visibility. Can you describe the 12V switchable source in the driver's footwell of the M3?

Here ya go. I'm starting from the radar detector then pointing to where I hid the wire behind the roof lining, pillar lining, under glovebox, center console, up to under the armrest. Pretty simple. I used a plastic wedge that you get with most installs these days. They are either orange or yellow in color. If you don't have one, just put ducktape over a flat head screwdriver to shove the wiring behind the linings.
Curious about what floor mats and quilted liner you have in your car?

I can't remember where I got the floor mats? I'll have to look and see.
The quilted liner I got off AliExpress. See pics for the store and info. I like these because they attach via Velcro to the carpet underneath and therefore don't move around. Fits really nice too!

Doing 77 on 70 is one thing, but doing 49 on 30 is another. It's completely reckless. You never know if a child is playing around the corner, or a pedestrian is trying to cross the road. I know children shouldn't be playing on the streets, but good luck giving "right of way" as as excuse if you hit somebody. You're free to endanger your own lives, but when you put others in harms way, that isn't justified. I don't care if you think you're an experienced driver and rules don't apply to you.

Use radar detectors all you want, as they're completely legal. But reckless driving (at almost double the speed limit) should not be condoned on this website. I'm surprised admins/mods are giving a free pass to this discussion.

Spoken like someone who's never left the cities or suburbs.

(moderator note)

These type threads many times end up with arguments from people like this one is starting to have. From a moderation perspective, TMC does not condone glorifying unsafe driving (so I usually delete threads people try to start talking about "I pulled on so and so and when I got up to 100 I ......").

The first post, which talks about "49 in a 30" is a bit questionable, but I let it go. With that being said, I am also not a fan of people passing judgement as if they know every reason why someone might want something like this. Discussion about installing a radar detector is not inherently "bad" and if people want to discuss the ways to do that in their car from a physical perspective, they should be able to do so. Its not an illegal activity.

So, I am going to ask that any discussion in this thread, after my post here focus on installation, and not judgement. By "ask" I mean that I will likely remove any posts after mine that are not about that.

By the same token, any posts which appear to "glorify" lawbreaking (of which I didnt really see any except "maybe" the first post) will also be removed.

Thanks

Given the post above, I am hopeful this post fits the TMC guideline.

Besides the V1, what other radar detectors have people installed in the M3?
The reason I ask is because the V1 is pricey but perhaps you get what you pay for.
thanks
The only other good detectors tend to be in the same price range. Escort Redline, Uniden R7 and Bel STI come to mind.

If the Radenso theia ever comes out, that could destroy any further competition. But that's looking more and more like vaporware.

Big fan of the Uniden R3. They also make a more expensive R7. I have had RD’s since they probably started. I have had the V1 (not the latest gen2), Passport Max 1,2, full custom ALP/net radar integrated and I am sure missing a few. I really like the Escort product but after trying the Uniden for about a year now it is my favorite. A little more affordable and performs better than all the others I have owned.

First of all, in urban areas, a lot of enforcement is done using LIDAR and not RADAR. LIDAR is a separate technology and requires something other than just a detector. Check that ticket and make sure you were in fact hit with RADAR and not LIDAR! In the NY Metro, I would expect to see both, but I wouldn't be surprised if LIDAR is just as common as RADAR.

Second, I don't think there's anything specific about the M3 that would prevent you from installing a detector that you could install in any other vehicle. It has a 12V power source, which all detectors use. If you put the vehicle in Sentry Mode often however, you'll need to understand that if you don't have some sort of other kill switch, the detector will always be energized the entire time you are parked with Sentry Mode on. You could go with a fully manual system where you have to switch on the detector when you get in the car, however that always leaves open the possibility that you'll forget to switch it on (that's why I don't do this in my vehicles, as I have forgotten to turn things on before!).

I'd recommend against using any custom installed detector on the market right now though because in my opinion, there is nothing out there worth buying. I've been burned twice on custom installed RADAR detectors, the last time with the Max Ci 360 Platform. When I purchased this unit, it had only been out for about 2-3 years and I reported an issue to Escort about false alarms. A few months later, they responded that they were apparently looking into a solution. But since then? Crickets. I wish I had just installed a windshield mount detector as it would have saved me several thousand dollars AND would have been much easier to upgrade. For laser protection though, you basically need to do a custom install (very important note here if you go that route), but for RADAR detectors, just save your money and get a windshield mount unit. So far, I haven't installed any countermeasures in my M3 though, only on my other vehicle (the M3 is actually a pretty challenging car to do laser protection on, due to the way the front of it is designed, but people have done it). Getting the cables through to the lift gate was an adventure though; there's a little tube that protects the wiring and pulling new cables through those tubes is extremely challenging (you have to run the cables through the tubes because that's what makes it where water cannot get into the inside of the vehicle). I started at around 9 pm and didn't finish until about 4 in the morning. Fortunately the M3's rear shouldn't be this difficult because it has a trunk instead of a lift gate.

Get the Gen2. It is night and day. I was running a gen 1 in my 911 with the savvy box (it plugs into the ODB2 port, reads vehicle speed, and lets you set a speed threshold for automute. So you could have it automute anytime you're under 35mph for example). Even with that, there is NO comparison to how the gen2 is with the V1Driver companion app. The app let's you set a savvy mute speed threshold, but also tracks all of the radar signatures - learns them - and then automutes anything that is identified as a consistent non-threat. There's also an option (not sure if it's within the Gen2 or the V1Driver app) that lets you turn off the display when muted. So you don't even have to see the blinking lights going off as you drive past dollar general doors.

As far as the 12v switchable source - it's been over a year and the details are a bit fuzzy. There is a thread on here somewhere about it. I believe that at a certain point (2020 or 2021) they changed the wiring slightly. Mine is a 2019 and the 12v cable is in the driver's footwell. It was a little bit of a hassle to get to but well worth it as now I have a nice clean install with no visible wires. One thing I did that added some time was removed the a pillar cover so I could route the power cable properly without crossing over the curtain airbag. Probably not needed but I figured it was the smart way to do it.

I should update, I have a V1 that's a firmware (or two) behind, and I think - or at least they used to - offer a trade up program.

I have a uniden r7 in my other car and a r3 in the model 3. I used a phone mount to suction cup onto the back of the display.

Yeah, that's what I picked up on the recommendation of someone here, I kind of dig the positioning, assuming it's high enough to be effective. I also picked up some USB-A_to_12vDC adapters, that power my V1 via the USB-C ports in the center console - though if I get that far, I might just run power to the actual 12vDC, I think it might be switched vs. the ports.

the 12V port based on my knowledge and experience so far is: its powered until the car goes to sleep. If sentry mode or summon is on, its always on.

Also, i dont know if the V1 has this feature but the unidens (gps models) offer a power save feature where if the gps detects speed at 0mph or no gps signal is obtained for an hour, itll auto turn off. so even even sentry mode it wouldn't sap too much juice.

Did you use the suction mount that came with the unit or bought one? Picture would be great.

don't use a suction mount. They are big, not always secure and they just suck. You get a metal adhesive mount bracket off of ebay or amazon for $9 and mount the detector up high and preferably behind a dark window tint strip. That way people don't see it, cops don't see it and you can leave it in the car
