Received Red California HOV Stickers for Model 3

It seems ridiculous to have ugly HOV stickers all over the car. In California, permanent disability stickers are applied to license plates and renewed annually, as part of vehicle registration--why can't that be done for ZEVs?
Couldn't agree more.
As far as HOV lane privileges, it seems reasonable that these are being phased out for gas/electric hybrids. It should eventually be reserved for high occupancy and zero emissions vehicles.
Well, so far there is no sign of that. Recently issued green stickers can be replaced for the new red ones just like the white stickers, and plugin hybrids can still apply for new stickers.

Enjoy the HOV sticker access while you can. Pressure is comming down from the Fed (who fund the HOV lanes).

They noticed that the HOV lanes are so clogged up with vehicles they often do not serve their purpose of speeding up High Occupancy Vehicles. Between all the single people sneaking in and all the vehicles exempt they often are not much faster than the regular lanes.

The Fed did not intend HOV lanes to privilege EVs and all the other exemptions that some states have enabled.

They are not threatening to hold back federal funds unless they are free flowing.

Will become a combination toll road and bus lane.

There has long been a tie between HOV lane average speeds and federal funding. This is one reason why many places are implementing toll lanes and additional HOV lanes so that they can dynamically alter the number of cars in the lane to get speeds up.

No sign?

My understanding is that anyone issued HOV stickers before Jan 1, 2017 is not eligible for the new red stickers. Starting Jan 1, 2019, red HOV decals will be valid only until Jan. 1 of the fourth year after the year of issuance — and you can only have one and it cannot be renewed. Is this correct?

Unless something changes, and even if it doesn't, Federal regulations could consider the HOV lanes in California to be too congested. This is why California is trying to free them up by parsing out the stickers. My bet is that after the red stickers come up for renewal in 2022/3, HOV stickers for hybrids won't be renewed. We'll be lucky if they allow renewal for EVs!

In any case, they're called HOV lanes, not Hybrid or EV lanes. California has already put a income limit on the sticker. Conversion of HOV lanes into toll lanes is being considered, as is raising the number of passengers from 2 to 3, even for EVs. I'd say these are all signs.

So, if you want EVs to continue to have the privilege of driving in HOV lanes, you might want to contact your State senator or representative.

I was referring to your statement that the HOV privileges for gas/electric hybrid vehicles were being phased out. But there is so far no sign of that happening. New plugin hybrids currently have exactly the same HOV privileges as full electric vehicles.

Not quite. Starting 1/1/19 the stickers will no longer be red, but will get a new color every year (the 2019 stickers will be "light purple").

My guess is that none of the stickers issued from now on will be renewed.

BTW, it's very well possible that there will be more EVs than plugin hybrids in CA by 2023, so dropping the latter wouldn't necessarily be the best way to solve the congestion issue. Driving around here in the Bay Area I probably see more Model 3s now than plugin hybrids. They are on the verge of going mainstream in CA, which means that the privileges will come to an end.

Model 3's are going to be the new Prius, which was the new VW Bug.

The timing for the Model 3 has been astounding. Personally, it lined up with when I had the cash to do it (thanks, Tesla stock!). Additionally, the red stickers coming out the week I got my red car. The 200,000th car coming off Tesla's assembly line just at the end of the year I got mine. The first time Advanced Auto Pilot was advanced over the first gen. The construction of free chargers in malls and casinos and city governments all over the places I wish to travel, additionally, the Supercharger network reaching a level that I don't need to think about where I am going in the US, the car just guides me (except Minot ND).

Also personally I have been documenting here the construction of a new Supercharger, feet from my front door. The drive I bought the Tesla for, weekly rides to the cabin in the Sierras, has gotten better with almost each passing week thanks to Auto Pilot improvements. Now the car has a web browser with a lifetime of free internet. I am just smiling from ear to ear every day I own this car.

i know it has been posted, but is it confirmed that if you wait till 1/1/19 to apply, the sticker is good till 2023 instead of 2022? the documentation seems to suggest otherwise
thanks!
It is not dependent on whey you *apply* it is when the decals are issued. Other than that... yes. You get three full years plus the remainder of the year in which the decals were issued.

If you live in California (as I do, NorCal), you likely won't get that free ride much past 2020 or so, no matter what color sticker you get/have (INCLUDING the reds):

Clean-air vehicles' free tolls in express lanes are on the way out

Quote from below link: "The loss of the popular perk is likely to spread to parts of the East Bay too. Clean-air car drivers on stretches of Interstates 580, 680 and 880 in parts of Alameda and Contra Costa counties will be get hit with a toll in 2020, the San Francisco Chroniclereported." LInk:

Drivers Of Low-Emission Cars Will Lose Free Use Of Some HOV Lanes

Oh well. Lesson here: ENJOY your exactly ONE YEAR and ELEVEN DAYS left for free carpool/express lane use in most parts of the Bay Area and LA . . . .

I mean rent it to OTHERS!
Hah hah, oh, yeah.

Not yet. The first 4 years we were ALL ABOUT the cabin, this year I think the wife has been there only a handful of times. She also mentioned that while we are paying the interest on the cabin it's a better write-off than it is a business. Loaded it to friends a few times. Gone there with friends many times.

I believe that's just for Express Lanes. We still get to use Carpool lanes.

I have only used them a few times (hence the easily removable part), but so far they have held up well. Haven't lost one yet, although admittedly I didnt try them in the rain that we got recently.
We just received our decals and I've ordered the magnet sheets. Ain't no way I'm going to put those hideous purple stickers on our Model 3 permanently!

Has anybody figured out a way to *check* on the status of new stickers? Tried with an out-dated form and had everything returned. Tried again, and it's been two months. Check hasn't been cashed. No indication if my stuff has even been received. No idea now long to wait before trying yet again.

Yes.

DMV # I called is: 1-800-777-0133 . That's the general line but first place to try -- low likelihood of success here. The semi secret "back line" to their Sacramento HQ office that handles HOV sticker requests (not published -- I had my ways of getting it) is: 916-657-8035. Call very early AM, the second they open and be VERY friendly to these guys. If you are, they’ll help you too. Also see if your $22 check cashed. The same number will give you your plate number before plates have been received so you can apply sooner!

Sweet. Thanks, man. The irony is that I live ten minutes from the Sac DMV HQ, but heck if I'm gonna try showing up. I'll try calling early. My plates arrived six months ago, so I'm all good there. Just need to decals! (and yeah, I look for the cashed check every week. No luck).

Here's how empty my life is.... best thing that happened to me on Thursday was that my $22 check was finally cashed by the DMV. Now I'll go stand out by the mail box for the next week....

This is my 6th set of HOV stickers over the years. Only one that's taken more than two weeks to recieve....
