Received Red California HOV Stickers for Model 3

Pondering if I will get fix it ticket every time an office stops me haha. Tbh drove an Audi A6 2012-2017 without front plate and never had issues, didn't know was driving without it though.

Important note: It's not a fix-it ticket for the HOV stickers. If they give you a ticket, it's (if memory serves) $491 + 1 point. No stickers on an eligible car is legally the same as a Humvee with one person in it, for HOV purposes.

I don't run a front plate because I don't mind paying $25 every once in a while but almost $500 and a point on the license = nope.

How I've dealt with my red HOV stickers (haven't had time to place the sides yet), which I feel didn't come out horrible. I kinda planned early for the red HOV stickers and figured I needed to tie the color into the car. I did this by getting the front and rear Tesla decal wrapped in red as well as sticking red decals on the aeros. The results are below.

The decal for the front actually worked pretty well with the way the bumper is shaped under the light. For the rear I just lined up the horizontal line of the bumper and gave a little bit of spacing from the red reflector to avoid a noticeable clutter.

I think for previous examples in the thread...some of you really need to work on lining up the angles. Yeesh. Forgot where I saw it but I sprayed a mix of 1:5 ratio alcohol/water from a spray bottle to mist the bumper and sticker before applying so that I could move them around and check positions. That helped tremendously.

How do you even apply for those stickers? I searched online and only found a DMV form but couldn't find where to upload it. I would normally use Mailform. for things like these but then that makes payment a bit difficult...

Snail mail the completed app and $22 check. Certify if you want to track it. The form is horribly designed - the address to send it is right where it say Application for...:

MAIL TO: DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES
SPECIAL PROCESSING UNIT - MS D238

I see, that makes sense. Do you know if the DMV also accepts appointments to come in person instead?

It is called old fashion mail and a handwritten check....
I've never tried either of those things in my life prior to now. This is a completely new experience to me...

I got my application returned a month after I sent it claiming that the proper paperwork from the dealership wasn't yet submitted. I included my VIN on my application but not my plate number since I didn't have that yet even though I DID have the car. I just put it in another envelope and re-sent and started my clock all over again

For all the technology coming out of CA, most government process or services are ridiculously ancient (in my 3 years of experience).

For a Model 3 to be purchased this summer, I wonder if there'd be any harm in waiting until 2019 to apply for the stickers. We don't really need single-occupant HOV privileges at this time, but we'll want to get the stickers eventually. I'm thinking we might as well wait, and only have to deal with the DMV once on this.
