Refused delivery. How long to fix?

Hi everyone,

I refused my delivery today in Fremont due to misalignment issues, gaps in rubber seals, bent FWD rubber seals, scratches external and internal, panels not glued correctly, etc. Seemed like a rush job to meet 1st quarter goals. Tesla customer service is fine however so I'm not mad or anything. They are going to fix the issues and will do a home delivery for me since I live 3 hours away. Can anyone provide an educated guesstimate as yo how long this process would take? Thank you!

...I refused my delivery...

I usually understand delivery refusal as to refuse to take ownership for the car which could mean a loss of your deposit but you don't have to pay for the rest of the car.

In this case, I think you signed all the paperwork and the car is yours but Tesla is fixing yours up post delivery.

It sounds like you don't need to order parts like a panel or a bumper so the fix should not be too long.

I would guess about a week.

Thank you for your reply Tam.

Yes I signed all the financials already. Bank funded. All that was left was for me to sign for receipt of the car, which I refused pending fixes. I could have taken ownership, but then I would have to drop it off at the closest SC which is 200+ miles from me. Best to just leave it with them. There was a big foot-long scratch on the black part of the rear bumper which may necessitate replacement too.

So, 1 week to fix and 1 week to deliver to home?

Dang that is sorta disappointing... Especially the foot long scratch.

Thanks for very helpful info.

Now that you mentioned about rear bumper replacement which may take a little longer to get parts.

Realignment and repainting is quick, but getting parts is time consuming.

I wouldn't dare to guess when yours will be done. By the way, 1 week for shipping is reasonable time.

Good luck!

I also had a lot of scratches on my rear bumper plastic trim. They are replacing mine on Tuesday. But why on earth does Tesla deliver cars like this, with scratches and all, when the car didn't even need to be transported? I would assume most post production damage is from transport.

Now I don't feel so bad about my car which also had scratches and paint blemishes.

Did you drive all the way there and refused delivery? If this happened to me I would have been so so sad. I am lucky that my car was delivered with no problems (other than some wind/road noise which I think is just the car). You did the right thing to refuse.. hopefully they will get their act together and fix it asap.

...happening 18 months after launch...

Bad presentation of new cars has happened since the Roadster, Model S, and now Model X.

Some of the problems are very easy and quick fix like finger print smears on shiny surfaces, brake dust on wheels...

I read a report where one of the Delivery Specialist said "You know: I can wash it for you off but your wheels will get dirty again. You know that, don't you? OK?"

That is just like telling a restaurant customer that you can feed them now but they will be hungry again so why eat now?

Unless the culture changes, bad showing of brand new cars will continue to happen.

It took over 2 weeks for our paint blemishes (noticed upon delivery) to get fixed. A decent paint shop can't just get dropped in. You take a number.

I'm so pissed that they are still pulling this crap. They know better! I really am shocked that they think they can still get away with this subpar performance on such an expensive vehicle. They have been called out on this REPEATEDLY for three years. Once they get some real competition, which seems to be quite a ways away, this will doom them.

As a shareholder, it pisses me off even more.

Come on guys. You have done flawless work for me. Why can't you do it for everybody else?

Good for you refusing the order. Insist on it being right before you take it.

Yep ~ our 2016 fall delivery MS had 3 moderate issues upon delivery. Sold it a couple weeks ago, & picked up our MX tonight. (for my better half) Asked her if she wants to take it home WHEN we find fit & finish stuff. She said yes - we're going to take it home. Noticed right away, the pearl white paint on the rear lower plastic didn't match the metal body stuff. Almost looks like a cream pearl (oh well). Noticed left side FWD 'banged' when window was opened all the way. (oh well) Several small 'sags' in the paint right at body part edges (oh well). Irregular gaps between several body parts (oh well) - so the good news, with so much mediocrity - it made the dirty paint's "orange peal" finish (won't go into that - if you don't know what that is) less noticeable. But - as well stated above - it's the only game in town, so it's the best game in town . . . oh, almost forgot . . . a bit of the obligatory windshield ghosting - goes w/out saying. but hey, "that's natural for such a big curvy glass". They say that, and they're not even embarrassed. But if it doesn't bother her . . . it's her car, so oh well.

HA ! more good news. today i took the MX in for windshield tint (maybe reduce ghosting?) photosinc 75% -
A whopping 45 or 50 minutes of driving time so far on the new ride - 40 miles logged total, & we got a yellow dash triangle, something to the effect - replace Charge port door - inoperable -
Called service - appointment is tomorrow -before we run out of charge. I joked with the service rep - "i didn't wana bring it in for little things like the rear window banging loud when its lowered - but now that I have charge access too? Well TWO things in one visit? More" bang" for the buck! "
:p
Don't think he appreciated my good humor/attitude - my wife? She's not nearly as upbeat. .... Keep'n the expectations low - it makes for a cool head
