This seems really crazy to me but my fully loaded S is in production and I want to switch from 19" to 21" wheels and, despite multiple conversations with California-based Tesla folks, I've been told definitively that I cannot make this change. I'm getting good support from my local Massachusetts-based Tesla team and they're trying to arrange for me to switch my wheels once it lands here, but still can't promise that to me.

This MAKES NO SENSE TO ME and is extremely frustrating. I've bought other $100k+ automobiles and, without exception, I'm certain the other manufacturers would have accommodated this change. The wheels go on last, right??? I welcome other experiences/advice any of you may have. Thanks.

I have often thought anyone should be able to make changes at any time; however, every time a person switches their order it then means there is additional chance of messing things up. This doesn't mention the supply issues if there are any.

I think it's much more reasonable to switch the wheels at the service station for the difference and possibly a fee. It's not Tesla's fault that you decided then changed your mind at the last minute and while they should accommodate you as best they can, you ultimately signed off on the 19s.

I would think that once they make a routing and develop a parts list for you car it cannot be changed (resource planning and such). But they should be able to switch it out once it his the local service center, assuming the parts are available. I'm sure they will work with you, just give them some time to react.

You can always buy the other wheels and put them on later, but it will cost you a couple grand.

To the OP. You live in Massachusetts, if you want the 21's you are going to need winter tires anyway, just buy the 21's separately and use the 19' all seasons as winter tires.

If you're in Massachusetts it might be to your advantage to keep the 19" wheels. If you later get the 21" wheels with performance tires, you'll want the 19" rims to mount winter tires for snow season.

Other's experiences. My car was delivered Jan 18. I waited almost six weeks to get a second set of wheels (19"). I'm still waiting for my CF spoiler and the small chrome placard that goes on the mobile charger. I had to wait a week to get a replacement door handle.

My advice, chill. Understand that Tesla is not stocking anything. Changing your order means taking the wheels from somebody else. Does that make sense?

I say: LET THE BIG DOG EAT!

Pacey's suggestion IS a good one though. Put the snows on the 19's and buy the 21's. You wont get snow tires for the 21's anyway.

So... I made the opposite mistake and put the 21" on. After thinking about it I'd prefer the 19" because of CT winters. I completely understand that managing changes to an assembly line is a pain in the neck and I believe no company could do it, except maybe at the dealership.

When do you take delivery? I am located in CT and my delivery window is March 20-April 3rd. If you want, I'd be happy to swap with you for the difference in price. I can use the 21's until your vehicle comes in and then we can swap? I'm taking delivery at the Boston facility, so if you are in MA maybe this could be a win for both of us.

    hahaha..

this timing of this thread is very interesting. because i recently went to a tattoo parlor to get a tattoo. i told him i wanted a dog tattoo'd on my shoulder.

and he's like: are you sure?
    and i'm like: yea
and he's like: are you really sure?
    and i'm like: yea

so he starts tattooing a dog on my shoulder. in the middle, I changed my mind. I wanted a cat instead.

and he's all like, "it's too late, waah waaaah waaaaaaaah!"

    I am now suing him.

Did you talk to your tattoo delivery specialist yet? Don't trump the chain of command.

Are you really trying to tell me that you have purchased other 100k+ vehicles and AFTER SOP (start of production) you were able to change wheels or anything else? I call BS!

I know this to not be the case

You are going to get exactly what you wanted. You should have taken longer to consider your options.

You're lucky… Sure, I have a cat tattoo, but something is clearly wrong with it. It keeps me up barking all night, and sometimes (this is embarrassing) jumps on people and licks their faces when they least expect it.

I'm going into tattoo service later this week to have them look at one of it's claws as it won't extend when it's in danger. But overall I don't really care because this cat tattoo is still the best tattoo I've ever had.
