I think the fingerprint thing is for when you want to remotely start the car, like when someone locked the card in the car and gives you a call to open and start it. Normally that requires a PIN, but a fingerprint works on the phones that can do it. Not required if you're standing near the car with a phone enabled as a key.

By the way, the card would be able to start the car... So I think the scenario you describe would be more like you got a call from someone saying "please move your car", and you say "just hop in and move it for me... I am going to remote unlock it and remote start it for you..." To let someone drive with no card at all.

How about listening from outside the car when someone is on the phone inside? My model S can be used as a megaphone, everybody within a 50 feet radius can hear what I am talking inside of the car. Same with the music.

I think they fixed that !

I do recall hearing a phone conversation outside of someone's model S that was really loud...
But with Model 3 is seems that the phone voice comes out of some vocal speakers more near the center of the dash and doesn't blast out of the door speakers like on the S.

When I play loud music in the 3, it can be heard outside, but somewhat dampened. You can mostly just hear the bassline.

Also, when I got out of Model 3 to try to listen to music it just shut down the sound completely when I closed the door.
It knows that there is no one in the driver's seat and when the door closes it shuts down the audio.
When I got back in and sat down it started playing different music off of my phone instead of the flash memory song I was playing before.
I had to get someone else to stand outside the car to listen to the music and tell me what they heard.
(I suppose I could have put something heavy on the drivers seat as a placeholder but I didn't have anything handy.)

Just get one of these. (Or turn down volume?)

By the way, auto wipers work...
Didn't see any way to turn on back seat heat.
Front seat heats warm up really quickly.
Defroster fan is a bit loud.
People are curious about the center screen. I got mostly used to it quickly. Some people thought it was dangerous to be looking to the side so much.
(I am glad it is close to the windshield level so I always have peripheral vision towards the road when glancing at the screen.)

It can be frustrating trying to figure out how to best turn off some of the "easter eggs".
For instance, what is the best way to turn off the sketch pad? There is no [X] button on the UI to make it go away.
Trying to reselect it in the easter eggs screen doesn't make it go away either.

The "auto lock on walkaway" doesn't seem totally reliable either. I have taken my phone away from the car, and found it still unlocked (mirrors open) when I got back.
Maybe I never fully got out of Bluetooth range. I was fairly far away from the car, but maybe it was still detecting my phone.
I may end up using that "shut off" button/feature on the touch screen after all. As it is now, I was just using the Tesla app on the phone to do a manual "lock" after I left.

Is there any button externally on the car to manually tell it to lock?

Tapping key card to B pillar will lock, I believe.

Edit: but that's not a button

Yeah, I was hoping to find a solution that didn't involve using the keycard. The concept of the phone detection should be that you never need to reach into your pocket for anything. I now know I can disable "walk up unlock" and just let the car see my phone when I press the door handle to unlock. I think I also want to turn off "auto lock on walk away" and find some other way to tell the car to "lock now" by pressing something on the car. Maybe I have to use the "shut off" on the touch screen before leaving the vehicle. It would be nice if there was something I could touch with my finger outside to make the car lock.

Can you press lock on the screen with the driver's door open, and then exit?

It appears not.

I have the locks set up like this right now:

And I can shut off power with this:

So, I power it off (screen goes black) with the door open... I get out and close the door... Mirrors are still extended, and car is still unlocked.
As soon as I press on the door handle the screen wakes up again...

It appears that tapping the card key against the external pillar is still the most convenient way I know to force a "lock now" operation from outside.
It is a toss up which is harder - pulling out the phone, opening Tesla app, and picking "lock", or pulling the card key out of the wallet and holding it up to the pillar.
I really wish there was some kind of external lock button on the car that didn't require the card key. "Walk Away Lock" doesn't seem safe enough to me to depend on the car locking itself. Particularly if you are just going somewhere close, like to a room in your house near the garage, an office next to the parking lot, or cafe table near the parking spot, etc.

I meant the normal lock/ unlock screen button. Does it go away with door open?
From manual:
While sitting inside Model 3, you can lock and unlock all doors and trunks by touching the lock icon on the touchscreen

Thinking of how lock my (typical) car. open, lock ,exit, close.

Ok, well "duh on me"... I didn't realize that unlock symbol was a button.

Yes, I can open the door, press on that padlock symbol (mirrors now close), then close the door and it is locked.
Now that I know the procedure, I don't need to use the cardkey or phone app to force a proper lock.

Note, if I push the padlock symbol first, then the door open switch, it will go back to being unlocked.
So, I do have to open the door first, then push that button before I get out.

Not everything on the top bar is a button. For instance, time, temp, LTE strength are all just indicators. Somehow I assumed that the padlock symbol was just an indicator not a button... Now I know...

Kind of a small button for something I would consider a major operation like that.
Sort of wish that there was a bigger padlock along the bottom bar instead.

Also, regarding the sketchpad... It feels like a background item... Other things pop in front of it similar to the way things pop in front of the nav/map (you can still see the outline of the underlying app around the edges of the pop-up app .) The only way I know to get rid of the sketchpad is to click voice control and say "navigate to {somewhere}" to swap the sketchpad for the map...

Is there no "maps" button? It is like the default background... But if you replace it with something like sketchpad there doesn't seem to be an easy way to switch back to maps with a click. Maybe it is somewhere I haven't checked yet.

Well, the LTE strength is supposed to be a button to get to the WiFi settings, it just hasn't been implemented yet. ;) (So everything on the left should be a button.)

And again, I have been trying to see how intuitive this car is without reading the manual first...

No delivery specialists can be blamed for my ineptitude since I just borrowed this car.

I wonder if you did a focus group with "random people over 50" and asked them what these buttons did, how many could answer correctly:

Now exclude smartphone owners.

One benefit to Tesla only offering to employees and existing owners so far is they have probably minimized these kinds of 'trifling' questions.

Sorry, laughing.

Quick story: I was in a meeting at Intel where some *younger than us* consultants were presenting their findings regarding aging and technology. They informed us that more older adults were comfortable using smart phones because 'their caregivers are probably teaching them'. (Note we were talking 55 and over.)

Dead silence in the room - then Intel's CTO says, 'Or maybe we're comfortable using smart phones because we designed them and invented the technology.'

Mic drop.

Can I play? Definitely over 50 and don't own a smartphone and don't want one. In retirement, I want to be less available, not more. I do have an old flip phone for emergencies and only my immediate family has the number.

From left to right:
Lock/unlock button
Manual homelink button
Turn bluetooth on/off
Signal strength
Tesla UI homepage (?)

I played with an owner's UI for about 5 minutes with no instructions. I worked through all the menus and felt comfortable with all of it. Seniors just don't get enough respect!
