As EV charging station operating costs can be 80% demand chargers from the utility per Electrify America, I'm interested in what if any battery packs Tesla might be using to do peak shaving and save money. 250 kW straight from the grid is pricey. I know Tesla has used battery packs at some Superchargers, but is there a standard battery size for a 8 post V3 installation?

Yep, as of this afternoon it’s up and working. I spoke with Brian the tech, super nice guy. He had driven all the way from Abilene to work on it. Turns out it was some incorrect dip switch settings but should be good to go now. He also explained how the V3 charger works. There are something like twelve Model S packs that charge from the grid and your car charges from them. He also explained the glycol cooling system for the cables. Note: This area hasn’t seen many Teslas. Be prepared to answer lots of questions :)

My guess is there is a bit of a communications mix up here. Early supercharger cabinets have 12 or so Model S battery chargers tied together to generate the required DC voltage and current to charge. V3 superchargers are from what we can tell, more purpose built hardware designed for supercharging.

Interesting. I did some research and the Telsa PowerPack (the large scale energy storage product) has 12 battery modules in them, but that's typically a separate box and not generally part of a supercharger installation. I have actually seen inside the V3 cabinets in Lowell and verified from online pictures that the cabinets don't seem to have batteries in them, but they do have 8 water cooled modules and 5 other larger modules inside. I would assume that both are part of the AC/DC conversion and charging process. Also each cabinet supports 4 stalls, so that probably means 2 modules per stall. There is also a separate box on the outside of the cabinet that has a small gateway computer with a network switch the communicates to everything inside. Some pretty cool stuff.

You’re correct. The packs are in a separate box. I wasn’t able to see them because the unit can’t be opened while it’s in use. Their primary purpose is to even out the voltage from the incoming 3phase line.

Stop to charge at the new Supercharger in Ozark, AR on my way to Springdale. Charged in the 4th charger from the north. The whole time I was there it did not provide me a ‘Time Remaining’. It just kept saying ‘Calculating...’, however it was charging! :). Whooyhoo Im so glad this charger is finally up and running. Much needed!

At least you can now go
- Little Rock
- Ozark
- Tulsa
- OK City

Don't forget that the Grand Casino east of OKC has pretty fast Tesla destination chargers. That brings the distance from Ozark to OKC down 35 miles if you swing in there for half an hour or so before continuing to the OKC Supercharger. I don't know if that's quicker than going through Tulsa, but you could play some blackjack while you wait :D

The PlugShare reviews for it are really good too.

Anyone done any more exploring along I40? This install crew must have gone somewhere...

I sure wish they would put one in at about Forrest City, then one might be able to skip Little Rock and make it from Forrest City to Ozark, roughly 207 miles according to google maps. We still don't have our Tesla yet but the supercharger in Little Rock isn't on I40 so it seems like its pretty far out of the way. That might not be reality though google maps estimates it to add 30 minutes of travel time between Forrest City and Ozark.

I'm sure at least a couple more Arkansas I-40 Superchargers are on the way. But until then, there are some destination chargers along the route. There are several in Little Rock, and quite a few in Conway. The ones in Conway are at hotels, and there are several restaurants near each group of destination chargers. The Conway destination chargers are also very close to the interstate making them far more convenient than even many of the Superchargers I've been to.

Conway is where I stop for gas when I drive across Arkansas. Again we don't have our Tesla yet so I'm not sure which is the lesser of two evils. Driving 30 minutes out of the way to supercharge for +/- 30 minutes (estimating 20-25 minute charge), or to stop a destination charger and charge at a slower speed. Alternatively there is a Tesla owner in Memphis that has offered to loan me their CHAdeMO adapter in exchange for a reasonable fee for the trip. So perhaps spending some time in Forrest City at the Electrify America Station would be another option to get us to the Ozark V3 supercharger.

I guess one good thing about the delayed introduction of superchargers in Arkansas is that they will be V3 units when they do go in.

With a Model 3, you'll charge at 500+ miles per hour, so probably best to hit the Supercharger. I agree that the location is not ideal. It would have been better if they had placed the Supercharger in North Little Rock.

We're buying a Model Y LR-AWD. We live in Memphis, just north of downtown. A 30 minute pit-stop in Forrest City might allow us to skip Little Rock altogether. We usually make this trip the first week of November but I think its pretty much all but canceled this year. Not sure we would get our Y in time to take it even if it were not canceled. So perhaps something will happen along I40 between now and November 2021. Google maps says the Ozark Supercharger is 252 miles from our home.

If you wanted to drive direct to the Ozark Supercharger, you could do it, assuming you're going about 65mph, and start with a 99% charge. You'd probably have to go 60mph during the winter, though. :/

Would be dependent upon head wind as well. I've done that Memphis to Ozark drive, and if the winds are strong it can cut your range by a solid 15+ %.
