Superchargers in Southern California (location speculation)

You are right.
But I'd still like to go there.
Maybe wait a few months?
How will we know when Tesla is ready to move?
Searching city building plans is not so much my idea of fun.

Vern,

We do not know when Tesla will pull the trigger and commence construction. In the past sometimes we have inquired of construction crews where they are headed next. (Tesla often will have crews scheduled for several sites over 3-4 months.)

I moved away from Southern California in '83, so I am not as familiar with the scenery down there as I was when I was young and keen. But we do know the sites that Tesla prefers in urbanized settings. They like outdoor malls and hotels that are close to freeways. If you want to be the scout, I suggest that you look for such locations proximate to the San Gabriel River Freeway or the Santa Ana Freeway. There is a hotel and casino in Commerce as well as the Doubletree. Maybe Tesla will be taking over the old Uniroyal Tire plant! LOL Or maybe Tesla will be installing their Supercharger at the Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library and Museum near Placentia! o_O

Thanks cpa. That old Uniroyal Tire plant-- wow-- that's the one on the right (east) driving north on the 5?

We were at the Nixon Library a short while back (hearing Brett Bair talk about Eisenhower) and a supercharging around there would be a fine tribute to the president who started the EPA and the Clean Air and Clean Water acts.

I'll cruise over to the proposed Commerce site and the proposed Downey site and report back on the no action. I'll be the first to say so!

There are three more planned for southern San Diego county: La Jolla, El Cajon, and the city of San Diego. Not sure where they are planned, but we do have a Tesla showroom at Fashion Valley Mall. There is already EV charging in two parking lots, one with L2 and the other with L2 and L3. This would be a good place for a Supercharger, but this parking lot is locked up after the mall closes. It is north-west of the intersection of I-8 and I-163 in Mission Valley, very close to the I-5. After experiencing driving through the night, it is important to have open restrooms close to the Supercharger. I was tempted to use the bushes in St. George, UT, but held it until the Starbucks opened at 5 am. For El Cajon I think somewhere close to the I-8 east of El Cajon would be nice so those heading west on I-8 can fill up before getting into the city. Some place close to 24/7 food and restroom would be great. Maybe a Walmart parking lot?

There are two more planned for northern San Diego county: Carlsbad and Vista. I live in south county so no opinions there.

Yeah, that's the one. On Telegraph Blvd. if my memory serves. I was always fascinated with its architecture when I was young. The Santa Ana Freeway was being built in bits and pieces, and right around the factory the dread " END FREEWAY" signs appeared, and we would take Telegraph to Pioneer (I think) before driving south to Katella to visit my grandparents.

Any interest in making threads to speculate the locations?

Happy to see the expansion but will be pleasantly surprised if even a chunk of this happens in 2017.

Self centeredly the list addresses a lot of my charging issues.

Pomona is close to home and will be nice to have on those days I forgot to charge (it happens)

Palm Desert should allow me to single charge on a windy day vs double charge when heading there and back for a round of golf.

Closer locations between me and my golf coach vs nothing.

Pomona vs Glendora or Diamond Bar surprises me. My guess is Cal Poly Pomona. They have recently added a lot of parking near their south entrance and is near a restaurant on campus.

As I mentioned I live close to Pomona so if someone hears about construction please feel free to ping me and I will head over anyime I am home and not on the road to snap pictures. I am not on here as often as I was so might need a heads up.

Culver City expansion is finished (already!) according to this post. Not sure when they started but it seems they added those 4 stations very quickly.

I stumbled upon this in the Fountain Valley thread, which states that Supercharger has already been surveyed for an expansion. Also rumor is that Irvine Spectrum and two other Irvine locations are being scouted.

Perhaps we will see them bang out some more expansions before all new locations go under construction?

I am taking the FV expansion with a big grain of salt. The survey took place 3 months ago and there are no markings laid out as of yet. I searched for permits without success. Perhaps it is stalled in a permitting process or with the utility. It is a good site to expand, if they do it right. They need another 12 stalls.

Irvine would solve many problems. There is a lot of land to be had there. It would be a good location for a mega-supercharger

Continuing the trend of Tesla expanding existing California SC sites initially before starting construction of new locations. Really the right approach to get ready quickly for the thousands of Model 3's coming to California this year.
Someone posted in the Redondo Beach Supercharger thread that the 8 stalls are getting 6 more added:

I 100% agree. The roll out seems to follow a pattern of:
  1. Getting key locations to allow travel from Point A to Point B in the busiest locations within the US.
  2. Expand routes to cover most travel across the US.
  3. Add redundancy and additional routes as able
  4. Expand key locations in #1 above to address congestion at busiest locations.
  5. Rinse and repeat.

This is on the corner of Colorado Bl. and El Nido in East Pasadena. I have no reason to believe this is the Supercharger location, but the site is large enough, freeway accessible, and has an interesting pattern to the trenches being dug. The 2x12's in the first picture make me think this is maybe for the foundation of a building. I'll try and catch the crew working and see if they know wassup...

A Supercharger there would be nice. However, it looks like there's a new building under construction at that intersection:

Tesla website has always had these maps of future superchargers. It used to be current map, then one or two non-zoomable maps labeled 2015, 2016, etc. They have just changed the format to overlay the proposed chargers in gray alongside the existing ones in red.

The "future chargers" are a wish list, pure speculation until there is actually a permit (blue dot on supercharge.info). They are a guideline but IMHO no more than half get built within the proposed timeframe.

I was told at Burbank Service Center that any new chargers in Burbank will be at a different location. They also speculated that the current Burbank supercharger would be closed once there are new ones in Pasadena, Glendale and a new Burbank location. The Burbank store/service center is very squeezed for space.
Tony is right on.....

In a way the Irvine Spectrum is a good location as it is right at the corner of 5 and 405 junction. It is right before the 133 freeway toll road. So make a perfect place. However, if they do any less than 12-14 stalls, it would be a complete waste. That place is already jam busy as it is. Irvine area alone has a good portion of Tesla owners who will be ready to use and abuse the space.

If Irvine Spectrum can do a the minimum 14 stalls that would be a very good spot.
