Tesla changing some deliveries to customer homes

At the costa mesa service center, Model S's are sprawled out everywhere. Majority of them are parked outside. The car is going to get dirty during transport or sitting at the service center parking lot. It may be easier to simply deliver the car, have the DS meet the new owners and then schedule a mobile detailer to do the detail at your home.

My understanding is the former as well. I'm a little nervous of the condition it will arrive in and disappointed I won't get that "showroom glow."

Not for a second do I think this change to all home delivery will be permanent. Way too inefficient afaik.

For what it's worth, my car was a direct-ship on an 18-wheeler to my home. It was detailed before it was "mummy-wrapped" and shipped, and the only issue I had with the detailing was that the adhesive used to secure the wrap to the windshield left a bit of residue I had to scrub myself.

I would be perfectly happy with this. I have no problem taking delivery at home, or some place nearby if the truck can't maneuver in my neighborhood, as long as the car is properly detailed and protected during transport across the country. This is especially true if it means getting the car a few days sooner. I don't need the delivery "experience". At this point I think I know all there is to know..

I don't know about elsewhere, but in DFW there is a warehouse where the cars are shipped to and only the ones to be delivered that day (or maybe the next) are actually at the service centre. When I picked up my car I was told there were sixty cars there.

It gives you an idea of how selective a forum like this is for Tesla fanatics. Most people here would be pretty impatient to pick up their new Model S, while the rest of the world can wait to do it. I can't believe there is such a backlog of deliveries at some of these places. Seems like delivery would be the quickest part of the process.

Seems like they need some sort of Amazon 'Fulfillment Center' model, tuned for a car, to ship cars to regional hubs and then prep and distribute. Actually seems like they need some sort of logistics expert to help them. Breaking up the dealership model is a great idea, but you have to solve for all the constituent parts you create.

Same in Atlanta. The service center had 10 S's in the parking lot out front and several inside. I actually wouldn't mind accepting delivery there as long as they didn't leave the car outside for more than a day or two and detailed it before pick-up.

case closed on dealership argument when the cars are delivered to your home. i take delivery just like all the other stuff that comes to my house by ups or fed x, or the mail carrier.

At least here in Los Angeles, the change implied by the title of this thread does not seem to be accurate. I am picking up my MS one week from today at the west LA distribution center and confirmed the date and time just yesterday afternoon. They have moved distribution from the small, limited capacity service center on Santa Monica Blvd. at Sepulveda to a larger, presumably rented for this purpose facility on Nebraska near Bundy, but they are still offering home delivery, pick up at the west LA facility or pick up at the Van Nuys facility.

Yeah, sorry for the over-generalized title. That's what my DS told me, but she may have meant all deliveries "in my area". As far as I know we don't have a distribution center with the single purpose for cars to be delivered. This sounds like a good idea, but they probably didn't have tome before the end of the quarter to set this up.

As of yesterday morning another local DS told me it has actually not been completely determined which way cars will be delivered. He said Tesla's goal is to "sign over" the cars to the trucking company and either have all deliveries to homes or all deliveries at a center. He said that he still expected to meet up with customers at some point to go over the car.

Charlene and I accepted delivery last Thursday. We were informed by the Bellevue, WA store that personal delivery is only for sites within 150 miles of their location. I was taken aback as I do not remember seeing this anywhere. So on Thursday a contract carrier dropped the most technically different vehicle we have ever owned with not a delivery specialist in sight and no schedule for one either. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement. We have figured most controls and customizations out, but are still at a loss as to how the voice activated system is to be configured. As far as I can tell it is not even mentioned in our "Owner manual" We have determined to drive the car to the Seattle service center (163 miles from our home) to get some pointers as our DS seems to believe that he has finished his duties and obligation...

Sorry to hear about your experience Jack, but they have a delivery walkthrough video on the tesla website: http://www.teslamotors.com/models/walkthrough . The walkthrough I received by my DS was pretty much exactly the same as the one posted on their website. Hope that helps.

Hello JackA. On page 19 of the Owner's Guide (Model S Owners Guide: | Tesla Motors ) you can find voice activation instructions. Better yet, here's Tesla's Official Walkthrough video.

And another from owner Cinergi by a different Tesla specialist Tesla Model S Factory Delivery - YouTube. Can you have too much? Have a wonderful time in your wonderful car.

I just got a call from Tesla today. I had requested to pick my car up from the Rockville, MD service center. The Tesla rep said that they have changed their delivery process. She asked me to send payment to Tesla and then they would release the car from the factory for a direct delivery to my home. Apparently they want to make their numbers for the first quarter. If they send the car directly to me from they factory, they book the revenue when it leaves the factory. If they ship to the Rockville Service Center, then they can't book the revenue until I pick it up from there, which delays the revenue to the next quarter.

I'm a bit disappointed. It was a rush to change things all of a sudden, and now all the money is out of my hands without a car in sight. I know that's the typical experience for many owners, but that's not the experience I had planned on. Tesla had offered me the choice to pick it up in Rockville, and that's what I had really expected.

I hope after all of this they make their numbers -- and I end up with a car that has no issues. *fingers crossed*

Ask for a refund on the "Tesla Personal Delivery", as you didn't receive that.

You could have refused.

I don't think he can refuse. The OP tried to refuse home delivery. He is out of town when the car may arrive, and he wanted the car to be shipped to the Rockville Service Center, where he could meet the people that will care for his car and get the formal introduction on the operation of the car. They refused any delivery other than to his home. As he may not be there to accept delivery, he asked me to be there when the car arrives if he is not yet back home.
