71 users. It's out to 71 customers, and 2,000 Tesla employees.
The idea that it is "close"? Well, it was "coming this year" in 2019, 2020, and 2021. The beta released to those 71 users last October, with the idea it would go to more people in about a month. Here we are 9 months later, and Elon said the latest version is such a big change it was pointless to release it wider. So that went out last week, and even Elon is kind of hinting it will be months (in Elon time!) before it goes wider.
And to be clear, this "FSD" is city streets autosteer. You still have to pay 100% attention. Current beta is attempting to crash the car about once every 10 miles. It's only on surface streets, the highway doesn't change. It's nothing like what many people would think when they hear FSD.
Finally, they promise they will have a subscription to FSD, instead of $5-10K, so that may be a better way to experience it in the beginning.
