This might be continuing the drift.. I also got a phone call about winter tires from Tesla (as it appears has almost everyone else).

Since we're drifting anyway...

I'm guessing I didn't get the call because I ordered the winter wheel package. (I'm almost drifting back on topic there.) I just called my Delivery Specialist to ask about which version of the Sottozeros would come with the package, and he did not know, but said he would find out and let me know. I will post again when he does.

And I'm guessing I didn't get the call because I live in New Orleans. :)

I'm wondering if this is just an initiative because they have a lot of winter wheels/tires in stock or if it is related to the P85Ds huge HP/Torque and making sure that nobody ends up doing an unexpected 360.

I think it's the latter. With this much power, the performance tires that come with the 21's will be dangerous in the cold and snow.

Just got a call. I'm within the 2 week window, to confirm, and Tesla said my coil configured P85D order can no longer be honored for 2014, if confirmed. Looking at February. As almost everyone selects air, this shouldn't mean much. Call it another streamline. For me, a choice between 2015 excise taxes and air are enough, among other considerations ($$), to put me on the sidelines. I'm cancelling.

It'll be great when folks get these cars. The halo effect is going to be priceless. Just, please, don't drive too slow ;)

I would expect they will be dispersed to the stores for demos. It is a bit surprising that they have not done this yet. But then again, as Elon keeps insisting, they need do nothing to stoke demand!

They'd have to be re-programmed (or de-programmed or whatever) to remove the auto-pilot features that aren't going to be available in the production cars for some time yet.

Here's the response from my DS regarding Winter Tires:

Winter Wheels/Tires

The 19” Winter Tire Set comes with Pirelli Sottozero II. This is the tire that Tesla has tested with the 19” wheel and it has passed our requirements. If you would like the Sottozero III you can absolutely purchase them elsewhere, but we cannot install them on your wheels.

That's interesting. I would have said that's too bad, based on the price differential on Tire Rack, but reading reviews, perhaps not. People do seem to be pretty happy with them. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

On a related note, I think we'll be able to get a $70 rebate from Pirelli in the form af a Visa gift card. Here's a link to the rebate form: http://www.pirelli.com/mediaObject/tyre-2013/us/en/promotions/winter/Pirelli_Winter_Rebate_Form/original/Pirelli_Winter_Rebate_Form.pdf

I was told the "End of Line"/start of production would be the 24th. It seemed to me from this thread and a couple of other with similar topics that the 24th was a common date when the Ds will start production in earnest.

I just spoke to a senior manager of delivery experience, and she also confirmed production of the P85Ds will start during the week of the 24th. Even though my VIN is up there with the Canadian deliveries, she did point out that my EOL date is the first week of December, which is one week later. I think they're definitely shooting for a furthest-first approach to make sure deliveries happen in December.

As far as the SF bay area is concerned, so far only the Palo Alto store has a P85D demo. I spoke to someone at Fremont, since I'm taking the factory tour next Tuesday, and they don't have one yet although they're aiming to get it early next week. Will keep you posted if they do, meaning some of the first P85Ds are going to stores as well for demos.

Even if your production is first week of December, you will still be one of the first deliveries, since you are so close. It sounds like Canadian deliveries will be during last week of November, and then First week of December will be far-away USA deliveries, and your lucky car.

I certainly hope so!
Will definitely keep everyone here posted on progress.

Maybe I'll change my address to Canada, and then at the last minute ask for delivery in Virginia. ;-)

Interesting strategy! I'd be surprised if your VIN wasn't also produced the first week of December though (at the latest).

Yep got the same call. I didn't choose the Smart Air Suspension, and apparently my order would essentially be held hostage for two months if I don't add the $2250 option. Whats next, am I going to get more phone calls later saying that I need to add the Sound package and 21" or there will be delay? lol.

Seems like Virginia is almost as far as Calgary but maybe logistically less problematic in terms of customs, and having to stop in Vancouver (in my case) prior to hopping on another truck.

Gpetti,

ill bet our cars will be on the same truck! I've been asked if Dec. 30 would be a problem and unfortunately I leave that day so requested the 29, 28, or 27th.

I also went went with all options nut the 3rd row.

Will have aves to meet so I have another geek to talk to - my family thinks I'm going nuts!
