—-they countered several recent false or speculative narratives in this report,

fully committed to automation

automation was a success in the majority of sub components of production, fully committed to automation including those areas not yet succeeding with the 3

still committed to 25% gross margins on Model 3

still committed to cash flow positive in Q3 and Q4

battery pack rate of 5K attainable before even using new Grohmann equipment. New equipment will reduce cost vs current process.

Model 3 is a simpler design (ie, lessons were learned from X). In this case Elon said otherwise in the CBS interview with Gayle King. But, letter strongly suggests he simply misspoke as it describes how much simpler 3 is than other Tesla’s and similar points re other manufacturer’s vehicles. Perhaps on call we’ll get clarification on seeming contradictory comment in that interview

several rebuttals of Munro’s analysis... Model 3 weight is in line with class, best quality of build Tesla ever in every aspect (message S and X about #1 and 3 in owner satisfaction of all vehicles... and 3 is higher quality than those, so consumers can figure out for themselves how useful Munro’s assessment is)

—-openings to criticism

language switching to about 2 months re hitting 5K is a very mild walk back, but likely will get described as “another broken promise” (who hasn’t already been thinking end of June is not a firm date to expect).

capex spend reduction on non-near term projects. which projects? how much reduction?

—-new nugget

if I’m not mistaken this is the first we’ve heard of reduced cobalt with the new battery tech in Model 3 vs S and X.

Pano/solid glass/solid metal
RWD/D
GB/T Port / Non
LHD/RHD
5 pass/7pass
Coil/Air
Ludicrous bracing?

Mix and match
So, does this mean Model 3 will also approach 80 variations, when all these options get offered - AWD, Metal Roof, RHD, Air, Ludicrous, etc.? Is Tesla saying they're building smarter now, or merely that they've only started with one model for the first year of production?

The frame is already outfitted for those options, Munroe at least confirmed that it is ready for AWD. Likely the rest as well.

One frame to rule them all. Check out the raw chassis photos from the Munroe teardown.

Edit: Apparently an @ls7corvete is faster that I am.

My interpretation is that a lot of these things are baked into the Model 3. GB/T can go on the opposite tail lamp flap instead of needing a new body stamping, for example. We already know that all the hardware for the dual motor cars is included in the currently shipping single motor models. Dashboard is symmetrical as opposed to S/X. Etc etc.
