Ugh....I want to return my Y...

Consider the brake pedal to be a proxy for all of the other flaws that exist but aren’t staring you in the face. Defects are like cockroaches; for every one you see, there are ten you don’t.

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

The failure has occurred with my last three iPhones (four, if you count a warranty replacement). The iPhone uses a variety of sensors to detect when the user is manipulating it, and enters a high power state if so. I believe the issue is that car is capable of receiving high power iPhone...

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

I sometimes keep my phone in my back pocket, but this morning it was in my front pocket. I suspect that, despite the denials of my service center, there is a problem with my car. It is an early build, so they may have changed the antenna design subsequently, or the antenna may be bent, or...

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

Still fails with the new iPhone 11 Max, and will likely fail with every future iPhone made until the end of time.

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

This still happens, all the time. Other high end cars don’t have this problem, but they use sophisticated fobs with high power and femtosecond timers/time of flight to prevent amplification attacks. If the antenna had just a few inches more reach, it would work perfectly. Has anyone attempted...

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

Ah, looking at the Model 3 fob, I see that it does not support passive unlock either, and that is custom made Tesla hardware. That confirms to me that there is a fundamental design flaw with Model 3 keyless entry.

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

As hypothesised, it appears from my experiments that it's an antenna sensitivity issue. If I place my phone/butt within a few centimeters of the door, the car will unlock. Disappointing, as that is rather inconvenient. I'd rather not have to body slam the car.

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

Thanks, @RTPEV--this reply is quite helpful. I'll attempt a set of experiments to gauge whether my phone's signal is, in fact, blocked by my phone or body.

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

I wonder if this issue is due to having two Teslas in my online account. The app. won't unlock at all if my Model X is selected--a bug, but possibly a related bug.

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

If this were true, other iPhone users would have reported it. Does anyone else experience this issue with their latest iPhones?

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

Thanks--I've tried that, to no effect. In fact, I've tried everything. This problem has been occurring since March of 2018, across two iPhone upgrades.

Car won't unlock until I handle my iPhone

My two iPhones have never worked properly with my 3. My brand new iPhone XS Max, for example, will fail to hands-free unlock the car most of the time. The odd thing is, however, that once I take the phone out of my pocket (waking up the screen) the car immediately unlocks. I don't have to...

PSA: back window broken by middle school soccer ball

Setting aside the fact that I witnessed the impact with my own eyes, let's pretend two rocks managed to hit the rear of a parked car in the exact same spot, with no evidence of any strikes in other locations, then vanished. Or, if you prefer, let's pretend these same two rocks managed to strike...

It was most certainly a soccer ball. I agree that the pattern of breakage is a bit odd.

I switched to a Ruckus in the same location, and the X is finally able to connect. It's night and day better.

    So sick of the negativity

So, because your experience does not jive with the majority of the posts here, it's because they must all be outliers? Have you stopped to consider that perhaps your experience is the actual outlier?

    MCU2 - Retrofit

If it's anything like the 3: yes, it sounds much better. It's basically a copy of the "Sound Enhancer" spatial processing in Apple's desktop iTunes. Apple's version is better, but Tesla's is very good. It makes the 3 competitive with the X premium sound. With the new MCU the X with premium...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

If one can't talk about a broad class of users, nor particular users, how can any discussion of human behavior proceed? And here, there is plenty of behavior to question. I'm all for avoiding ad hominem attacks, but not as an excuse for selective enforcement against unpopular opinions.

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I'm sorry, I must disagree. My point, in softer terms, is that even if you think you understand the risks rationally (which is impossible, as AP is a black box system with unknown, ever changing behavior) your body cannot do what is necessary to contain the risk. Are you overweight? Ever have...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

+100. Even with detailed release notes, however, it's very difficult for anyone to properly judge the risk of Autopilot: Those who use Autopilot are generally not able to appreciate the risks. Because they use AP, they are, by definition, too dumb to properly assess them (until it's too...
  23. C

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Here the driver knew AP was problematic, but used it anyway, presumably because it is fun, or they paid a lot of money for it, or they thought it was fixed, etc. If they were under 18, Autopilot could be legally classified as an "attractive nuisance" and Tesla held liable for lulling the driver...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I would propose that we spawn at least one thread for every Autopilot induced fatality. The victims deserve at least that.
  25. C

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Sorry, I should have emphasized the 1.0 aspect. AP is much, much better now.
  26. C

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I don't think the chances of a repro. are very good. I suspect Tesla has an emergency system to silently push out Autopilot fixes to the fleet, independent of normal system updates. They've probably already issued an update that hardcodes a fix for this particular location.

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Once, AP almost did this to me. I was in a similar leftmost HOV lane when it was turning into a divided lane. A similar concrete barrier was at the gore point. In my case, the car that AP was tracking decided suddenly that it wanted to be on the main highway, and veered suddenly to the right...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

No: the pitot tube malfunction was only temporary, and there were other airspeed indicators available. The pilots simply couldn't recover situational awareness after the autopilot malfunctioned, just like the driver of the X couldn't determine the degree of danger he was in when the X autopilot...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

TL;DR: Tesla's shameless gamesmanship dishonors the dead.
  30. C

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

One explanation is the "Air France" effect, where hundreds of people died because pilots could not recover when their autopilot disengaged; see: Automation Has Made Airline Travel Safer. But Are Pilots Too Dependent on It? Autopilot results in fewer minor problems but more disasters. The FAA...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Yes, the above statistic is misleading. Teslas are bigger, stronger, newer and safer than most other cars. Their drivers are also richer. So it is natural that the fatality rate is lower. Everyone should own a Tesla! However, the real question is: given identical Teslas, one with Autopilot...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

It's clear that humans are fallible. It's clear that AP is fallible. It follows that every so often both AP and human will fall simultaneously. The only question is whether AP makes some humans more fallible than if AP were not available—or increases the severity of the consequences. So far...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

The next time you're in the passenger seat, try to see how long you can shadow drive before your mind involuntary wanders. Try to maintain strict attention 100% of the time for an hour. Your actual attentional rate will be less than 50%. It's not your fault; that's how the mind works.

    MCU2 - Retrofit

An MCU retrofit for less than two percent of my car's value, or two years worth of tires? Count me in.
  36. C

    MCU2 - Retrofit

The MCU handles everything that’s not autopilot and not the drivetrain.
  37. C

    MCU2 - Retrofit

The overall speed is a function of not just the CPU, but also the network and flash memory. The CPU itself, IMHO, is much faster.

Nothing wrong with my fit & finish.

Panel gaps are a clue that quality may be poor in hidden parts of the car. It's like the cockroach of bad manufacturing. For every one you see, there are multiples you do not. You may attempt to bully me, but I am allowed to both own a Model 3 (carbon free!) and allowed to wish that quality...

    MCU2 - Retrofit

At $.12/kWh, $20K of electricity is approximately 500,000 miles. If half your miles were supercharged, that's a million mile car, which would take the average driver 83 years to accumulate. And that assumes solar and wind don't drop the cost of electricity 10x in the medium term.

    Phone as Key Issues

I suffer from the same issue with two iPhone Xs.
  41. C

Nothing wrong with my fit & finish.

When it comes to body panels, I have to wonder: if Tesla can't get the most obviously visible parts of their cars right, how do you know the hidden stuff is quality? I'm reminded of the ghosting windshields and bad trim of the X, and all of the other problems it had; and that was with a mature...

Windows that don't roll all the way up

I'll be darned, it did it again. I'm not sure of the cause, but I don't really like the car to lock (or drive) with a window partially rolled down—at least, not from the car's own doing. Some kind of alert would be nice.
  43. C

Nothing wrong with my fit & finish.

Except the Bolt has both; likely the I-PACE too. And the first Xs, where price was no object, also had major body panel issues. Tesla just doesn't know how to make quality cars at scale.

    Phone as Key Issues

I've reinitialized both my and my wife's iPhones and unlock remains unreliable. Most of the time activating the phone resolves the issue, but that's still pretty annoying.
  45. C

    My first key issue

If it's any consolation, my iPhone key is properly initialized, and I still occasionally experience the same issue. Very annoying.

    Phone as Key Issues

Does anyone else experience iOS phone key failures regularly with 2018 firmware?

    MCU2 - Retrofit

Even if they are able to optimize the old MCU, the new MCU will always be at least 4x faster. Taking a wait and see approach is like hoping that the next version of Windows is magically faster on your five year old 1 Ghz laptop before deciding to upgrade to the latest, 4 Ghz version. Face...

    MCU2 - Retrofit

I'm not sure Roadster owners asked for a battery upgrade. But, regardless, Tesla has a long history of making upgrades available.

    MCU2 - Retrofit

Yep: and the appropriate time to do this is when the entire interior is refreshed. The MCU2 can be considered a stop gap measure for parity with the 3. Only the minimum number of changes need be made.
