Understandable frustration with some people ordering the exact same spec but later & getting an earlier allocation seems unfair and badly organised.

However, the general consensus is that as deliveries to SCs will always be by car transporter load, then if 'your' spec car is available but a load isn't going to be ready for 'your' SC then it may be given to someone else in a different location even if they ordered after 'you'.

So as a consequence 'Don't build to order' & 'Don't allocate by order date' seem to be the models Tesla use.

It does always sort itself out in the end but every quarter sometimes sees delivery sequences being out of sync with order date sequences.

Wouldn't work for a traditional car manufacturer.

I'm only kidding, but it's exactly how other manufacturers work. My wife bought an Outlander a few years ago and they have a similar concept - small number of specifications and colours - she went for a combination that wasn't popular at the time and took delivery in about 10 days, if she'd wanted silver she would have had to wait four months until the next batch arrived.

Contrastingly, Jaguar only build XJ and F-Types to order, so when you buy one of them you have to wait for the vehicle to be built, but they can tell you exactly when to expect it as a result. They even invite you to the factory to see your car during assembly (they make all the parts at different sites and assemble at another), you can even talk to your upholsterer and trim specialist if you go during the right phase of the process.

Edit:
OK, I finally broke and called Tesla. I'm not matched yet, but they expect delivery to be last week of November to middle of December and I should call back if I haven't heard in a couple of weeks.

He said the trade-in figure won't change more than a few hundred pounds if I haven't put many miles on the car since they gave me the value.

So that's it, as everyone likes to compare with their own circumstances:
M3LR, completely standard apart from black paint.
Ordered on the evening of the 16th October.
Trading in existing vehicle.
Tesla finance.

A great opportunity to get to know them on a personal basis. If my experience of owning a Jag is anything to go by you'll be spending a lot of time with Jaguar staff (as the damn thing goes in for repair again!):p

Owned more than ten in the last 25 years, apart from the classic XJS I had for a while they were rarely in for anything other than services and I think a couple of safety recalls. Used to put the XJS in storage for six months every year over winter and every year when we would reconnect the battery and it would fire up first turn. It would then fail the MOT because one of the sills had rusted, though ;)

Don't know if I was lucky or you were unlucky, but this will be my first non-Jaguar in a while.

Maybe it was a bit of a generalisation to say all car manufacturers.

I was luckily enough to get a behind the scenes tour of the Hyundai factory in the Czech Republic a few years ago. Was amazed that every car was built to order. The robots at various stages were programmed from an order/specification list that was fed from the main dealers sales. It wasn't even as if each line was assigned to a different model, one moment the robots could be bending the steel for an i30, then ix20, ix35 etc. All dependent on who's order was up next.

I don't think Tesla have this capacity. Imagine on each production line there's a necessary pause between S,3,X,Y to retool and reprogram.

Ordered M3 LR MSM 18" wheels on the 20th Oct.

Spoke to Tesla via email and they replied very quickly asking if we could speak over the phone.

They told me my car was en route and i'll be notified when it gets nearer to the EU region. For me, i'll be going Birmingham for collection. And they confirmed the lock down would not prevent car collections, subject to further changes from the Government.

Date wise, I was told end of Nov start of Dec for collection.

I was offered the 2020 model and could collect this sooner. Happy to wait for the 2021 refresh though.

Can I ask, with the initial trade in offer, then the final offer after submitting photos, was there a difference between them by much? I got two pre purchase offers both the same over a fortnight, but now have waited a fair few days for the final offer after chasing, getting worried I'm going to be stitched up as market value seems to be dropping rapidly for some reason over this week!

They offered me the same as the initial offer, I expect you will only see a difference if there's any obvious major problems like a dented or badly scratched panel, but it could well depend on the car.

One thing to note in the T&C, the trade-in vehicle must have at least one month valid MOT at the point of trade in, so if you're due before the end of the year it might be worth trying to book a test - if you can.

I've "completed" my trade in, uploaded photos/V5 the lot. I have my trade-in value for my car and I'm hoping due to the delay in deliveries being down to there doing the value doesn't change. I have the value on my Tesla account which hasn't changed since 8th October and I've been told all I have to do is collect the Tesla and hand the keys over for my trade-in that's it.

My estimated and final offer was the exact same as well. No difference between them.

Right, that's good to know. I just worry they take the £100 deposit and then low ball you a couple weeks later messing up finances etc!

I work with many automotive manufacturers. Some manufacturers do as stated and they have fully automated lines that build to order, some have lines where they set a run of 20 type A, then 10 type B, then 30 type C. Some Japanese companies who build the base model in Japan will then export this to European hubs where they will then configure the base model to the specific customer order even to the point of removing cloth seats and putting in leather seats.

Each method has it's own merits and if you are a manufacturer who can pretty much sell whatever they want they will build an allocation of each variation per day or per month. This is easier to manage for a young company and even easier if you know that everything you make you sell.

I received email+text notification on 30th Oct my M3LR Blue+black int, 18in aeros and tow hitch (ordered 31st Aug) has been allocated and delivery will be at Thorpe Park Chertsey on 19th Nov. Spoke to West Drayton office just now asking for VIN and was then sent a text with my VIN, which includes "MF" as the 11th/12th characters indicating its a refresh model. They also confirmed the car is on the RCC Antwerp. The Reg will be notified to me one week prior to collection.

Do I get a prize for being the earliest order date without a text yet? :D

My lease blue M3LR with 18" wheels and black interior was ordered on the 17th September and I'm still to receive a text. Tesla have said the order is fully approved by the lease company and evidence suggests the text would come direct to me so it doesn't look like the lease company is holding things up. I've given up phoning to chase as I'm not sure I'd believe what they say anyway!

I can only hope based on other posts that my text is just around the corner.
