GLOVIS COSMOS continues to make excellent progress across the Atlantic on her great circle course at around 17kts.
She is presently about 450NM WSW of the Isles of Scilly and she should become visible to land based AIS receivers tomorrow afternoon as she approaches the English Channel.
I have no weather concerns for the rest of her voyage, a little choppy perhaps tonight and tomorrow but nothing that should delay her.
She is due to arrive in Zeebrugge on Sunday afternoon.

LAKE FUXIAN has left the Mexican coast behind and is now about 230 NM off the coast of El Salvador.
Her speed however has dropped to below 17kts and, by my maths, she has fallen a little behind schedule if she is to arrive at the canal entrance tomorrow night (local).
It could be that she has received her canal transit slot and is aiming to minimise her time at anchor at the entrance but if that is the case she may have a late Sunday afternoon transit instead of the more usual early mornings slot.
My ETA for her arrival in Zeebrugge is currently around 21 May.

GLOVIS CHORUS finally departed Pier 80 last night for the Panama Canal with an ETA there of 14 May.
She is not hanging around and is making over 18kts as she heads down the Pacific coast.
I estimate her arrival in Zeebrugge will be around 27 May

The GLOVIS CHORUS competition is actually already open - the formal opening post to follow later today.

RCC AFRICA is carrying LHD Model 3's to EU from Shanghai .
She is currently in the Mediterranean off the coast of Algeria making around 15kts.
The weather for her continues to look fine for the moment but she may have a lumpy Bay of Biscay to look forward to next week.
Her ETA in Zeebrugge is next Wednesday, 12 May

GLOVIS SUN is bound for the Suez Canal with an ETA there of 18 May.
She has left the Straits of Malacca behind and has rounded the Banda Aceh peninsula and is now heading for a point off the south coast of Sri Lanka.
My ETA for her in Zeebrugge is 28 May and possibly Southampton around 31 May.
The Zeebrugge Port Schedule is showing her arriving there on 4 Jun.

LAKE GENEVA finally departed Shanghai after being alongside for 36 hrs (an eternity in Shanghai!) enroute to Suez with an ETA of 27 May.
This ETA is a little unambitious in my opinion and so, although she hasn’t declared it, I wouldn’t be surprised to see her make a fuel stop off Singapore around 12 May.
I estimate that she will arrive at Zeebrugge around 6 Jun.

GRAND VISION also departed Shanghai enroute to Singapore yesterday and so earns a place on the watch list however I very much doubt if she will amount to anything.

Friday night is deep delve night, when aided with a glass, or two, of finest claret, I aim to identify future Tesla vessels. Lockdown has had a devastating effect on the wine cellar and I suspect it will have to be that St Emilion in the corner, that I have been avoiding for months, that will be supped tonight.
Think the forum members should club together to restock your wine cellar as a thank you for all the good work you do keeping us informed!

GLOVIS COSMOS is currently approaching the western entrance to the English Channel and is now visible to terrestrial AIS receivers.
She is currently maintaining just over 16 kts about 50NM S of the Isles of Scilly.
She is due to arrive in Zeebrugge tomorrow afternoon.

LAKE FUXIAN has continued to maintain an average speed of below 17 kts and it is now impossible for her to make her stated ETA for the Panama Canal. I mentioned yesterday that this is probably because she has received details of her canal transit slot.
I estimate that at her present rate she won’t arrive at the entrance until midday Sunday.
We may therefore be looking at a canal transit late on Sunday instead of early Sunday.
My ETA for her arrival in Zeebrugge remains around 21 May since any time lost here can easily be made up on the Atlantic leg of the voyage.

She is due to arrive at the Panama Canal next Friday.
Her ETA for Zeebrugge will be around 27 May

RCC AFRICA is carrying LHD Model 3's to EU from Shanghai .
She is currently in the Mediterranean approaching the Straits of Gibraltar making around 15kts - she is clearly in no particular rush.
Although a good few hours away from entering the busy one-way system in the Straits, she is very nicely placed to enter the system on the northside safely with ease. As she enters the Strait she won’t have any concerns about her positioning but can concentrate on monitoring the antics of others as they rush to enter the flow. In my experience it is much better to be a spectator at these events rather than a participant and RCC AFRICA is nicely set up for a grandstand seat.
The weather still looks like she may have a lumpy Bay of Biscay to look forward to next week.
Her ETA in Zeebrugge is Wednesday, 12 May

GLOVIS SUN is bound for the Suez Canal with an ETA there of 18 May.
She is making just under 15kts towards a point to the S of Sri Lanka.
I am wondering whether this ship will actually head to Southampton first before Zeebrugge - it would be unusual but we won’t know for sure until she clears the Suez Canal. In the meantime we’ll assume she is heading for Zeebrugge.
My ETA for her in Zeebrugge is 28 May and possibly Southampton around 31 May.
The Zeebrugge Port Schedule is showing her arriving there on 4 Jun.

Last night's deep delve was not as successful as I hoped it would be and actually raised more qustions than answers.
I failed to identify any further ships from Shanghai (identify is the key word here) and GLOVIS CENTURY's itinerary is still not clear.
GLOVIS SUN's itinerary is also undetermined - Is she going to Southampton before Zeebrugge? There is some evidence to suggest she might be but then the question is raised about the reliability of that evidence.

Some good news, my correspondent in San Francisco who contracted COVID was not admitted to hospital but remains off work (as do a number of his co-workers). He is not out of the woods yet and describes the experience so far as the worst thing he has ever had, but he hopes he is now on the mend. He wasn't vaccinated - it was on his to-do list because he has been kept extremely busy working longer hours due of the number of other people that were off with COVID.

GLOVIS COSMOS has arrived off Zeebrugge and should enter the port this afternoon.

LAKE FUXIAN has entered the Gulf of Panama and will arrive off the entrance this afternoon.
Quite when to expect her transit is anyone’s guess but I am now inclined to think that because of her leisurely approach we may have to wait until tomorrow morning.
My ETA for her arrival in Zeebrugge remains around 21 May but it may slip to 22 May.
I will post some information on the canal and links to webcams etc later today.

GLOVIS CENTURY is own her way to Pier 80 and will arrive there late tonight (local).
I am still a little confused with her itinerary. She should be heading for Europe but there are still port bookings in her name elsewhere in the next couple of weeks.

RCC AFRICA is carrying LHD Model 3's to EU from Shanghai .
She enjoyed an uneventful passage through the Straits of Gibraltar yesterday and is now about 50 nm SW of Lisbon.
She will have to contend with a 4m Atlantic swell until she is clear of the Bay of Biscay.
Her ETA in Zeebrugge is Wednesday, 12 May

LAKE GENEVA is enroute to Suez with an ETA of 27 May.
She is enjoying some calm conditions in the South China Sea.
I estimate that she will arrive at Zeebrugge around 6 Jun.

A couple more ships have departed Shanghai for Singapore which I shall keep an eye on, MORNING PROSPERITY and NORTHERN HIGHWAY. Additionally, TORONTO has turned up to load and I can’t find her planned itinerary, which is unusual for this ship, which suggests she may have been chartered by someone. We’ll see where she heads off to…

Wonder if any if these ships have my car on. Tesla have told me that the car will be arriving into Southampton with an ETA mid June.

LAKE FUXIAN has finally arrived at the entrance to the Panama Canal and the only question remaining is when will she commence her transit?
She will have paid a fee to jump the queue and so I am pretty confident she won't be waiting long. She may have a slot in this afternoon's northbound wave or she may be waiting until the small hours of tomorrow morning.

The first indication of something happening will be the arrival alongside her of a canal pilot. He will board the ship and she will then head up towards the first set of locks, the Miraflores locks. This is the first of a set of two locks which will lift the ship a total of 54ft. After Miraflores the ship will motor the short distance to the second set of locks, the Pedro Miguel Locks which will lift the ship the final 31ft. The ship will now be level with Gatun lake and she can make her way to the final set of locks, the Gatun locks which will then lower the ship 85ft to the Caribbean in 3 stages.

The Panama Canal provides a shortcut for shipping travelling from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean and vice-versa. Instead of having to route to the south of South America and then back up, a distance of about 10,000 nm the canal offers a mere 51 mile transit. This comes at a big (well into 6 figures USD) price, calculated by a complicated formula, designed to maximise revenue to the canal operators. The original canal opened in 1914 and was an immediate success. In the first year it handled about 1000 ships and by 2008 it was handling nearly 15,000. These figures alone don’t tell the whole story because ships were getting bigger and bigger and one of the limits to the size of ships being built was the size of the locks in the Panama Canal. Ships that were built to fit (just) into the locks were described as Panamax ships. That is why so many cruise ships, container ships and car carriers are 32.3m wide and have a draft of under 12.6m.

The expansion of global trade and the increase in shipping meant that the canal was becoming a bottleneck with frequent delays and queues of ships waiting to transit. Fees for queue jumping became ever more expensive and ever more necessary to avoid delays. Alternatives to the canal were seriously being considered eg the NW passage and a number of alternative canal routes that avoided Panama completely. Panama relies on the income from the canal and could not afford for any of the alternatives plans to be viable and so the plan for the expansion to the existing canal system was commenced in 2007 and completed in 2016. This introduced two new sets of locks built parallel to the existing locks. Significantly, they now allow ships up to 366m long, 49m wide and with a draft of up to 15m to transit the canal. The new locks are of a modern design which use less water and are regarded as safer and more reliable too.

So a Panamax ship like LAKE FUXIAN will use the old locks - Miraflores, Pedro Miguel and Gatun locks to transit whereas bigger ships like GLOVIS SUN have to use the new locks at Cocoli and Agua Clara.

The canal is big business and so is generally a pretty slick operation entirely dependent on how much you have paid. The Tesla ships are normally booked in several weeks in advance and are given a pretty high priority. Delays of more than 24 hours are rare and normally we can expect the ships to start their northbound transit in the small hours of the morning and be in the Caribbean around 8 hours later.

There are webcams at the locks so you can watch the ships going through. The link to the webcams are here (I'm having a problem with the Miraflores camera but the others seem OK) There are plenty of youtube videos and documentaries on the canal, its operation and construction, many of which are very good.

I'm wondering the same thing - my Tesla sales person emailed "It is currently on its way from China with an estimate arrival date of the 10th June"; my VIN is LRW3F7EB1MC236***
I placed an order from inventory yesterday for M3LR. I have a VIN already in one of the documents, LRW3F7EBXMC236***, so it's likely on the same ship as your vehicle. Let me know if you find out more!

LAKE FUXIAN has not made her way towards an anchorage, so we may be looking at an imminent canal transit, which would be great.
For those who have not yet entered the LAKE FUXIAN competition, remember it closes when she enters Miraflores lock - enter HERE. Last chance!

UPDATE: Sadly she has dropped anchor and so I suspect she has to wait until early tomorrow morning for her transit.
