I have no knowledge on Tow Hitch use.. and brief would be much appreciated.
Well, when the 3rd row of the 7 seat is in use, for both the Model X and the Model Y, the rear trunk size is quite reduced.
So having a tow hitch allow to install a platform above the rear bumper for extra storage.
This is better for consumption than having a box on the roof, and of course this is not possible with the Model X.
Otherwise a tow hitch can be very practical to carry bicycles.
You can also tow a trailer, from one of those U-Haul one that you can rent at Home Depot to a caravan for camping or a boat.
Yes, as mentioned by @vickh you can get installed at a Tesla Service Center for $1000 + $300 install. Is this something I’ll can add on after purchase ? And if that costs same/more?
However, you don't plan to use any trailer, you could install some after markets models (see e-trailer).
But only Tesla could activate the Towing software, allowing to suppress the warning error from the
bumper sensors, when backing up with a bicycle carrier. And also if you need to have an electrical braking
device controlling your trailer.
