Account/Ownership Transfers

Your neighbor buy a 3 or was it an S or X? Your neighbor may have had it moved, but I've seen countless reports of people saying they've been told there's a delay or stoppage of VIN reassignments for model 3s for the time being. Your neighbor sounds like an outlier. Lucky for him.

This isn't true at all, my neighbor just had his transferred 2 days ago. You (or the current person under the account) need to send the request through your My Tesla account. Give the name, email, and phone number for the new owner.

Are you sure your neighbor transferred a Model 3 or was it an S or X? Either I am being completely lied to by every Tesla employee I've spoken with or your neighbor is mistaken or has gotten around the system somehow.

I have been told repeatedly that there is a company-wide hold on any and all account transfers on the Model 3.

This whole situation is very curious...

I transferred my 3 over to my wife maybe a week or so ago. I tried doing it at delivery, but no luck. It transferred over to her within 24 hours of me requesting through the Tesla account. My neighbor who also just took delivery of a Model 3 just transferred his a few days ago over to another family member. He also did it through the Tesla account.

You're being misinformed, I updated this thread as soon as mine went through.

Wow...can you tell me exactly how you went about doing it? Because, so far, I have called the (877) 798-3752 number and spoken with countless reps there. I have directly contacted [email protected] and [email protected]. I've contacted my delivery specialist and the pre-delivery specialist. In addition, I have sent the request through the Tesla account page: Manage: Ask a Question

I literally have tried every avenue I could possible think of and have had absolutely no luck or progress. Some people have told me everything's been submitted correctly and that it should take 3-5 business days, which has long since passed. I believe they have been mistaken assuming the normal processing times for Model S and X, and not realizing there have been issues with Model 3 transfers. But, as some of you have alluded to...it seems like some people are getting them transferred and I am at a complete loss here.

Why would they be telling me one thing (Model 3 transfers have been completely suspended temporarily) when some people are having success in doing so? This was a completely legitimate purchase made by my dad! It's not like I bought or sold the reservation from someone! Then, at least, I would understand that they're trying to curtail activity like that. But, it's my dad we're talking about!

I don't know what to tell you, I only commented again because you seemed to be questioning the legitimacy of my statements about transferring M3 ownership over. Aside from the instances involving myself and my neighbor, I don't have a larger pool for you to sample from.

As you stated before, maybe we were both outliers...

Email response I got yesterday. Took a week to get this response.

"Hello,

Thank you for contacting Tesla Customer Support. Unfortunately, due to a high volume of Model 3 transfers, we are currently backlogged in which our team is working diligently in processing as quickly as possible. At this time, we don’t have an ETA of when the transfer will be completed. For the meantime, you have been granted mobile app access so you can login with your own Tesla credentials. Please be aware that the vehicle will still remain on the reservation holder’s account until the transfer is fully processed. I’ll reach out to you as soon as the vehicle has been transferred to the new account."

I took delivery of my car on th 26rh. Requested transfer of the vehicle to my account on the same day. Emailed the Tesla rep for an update this morning and got this response below....
Hi ......
Unfortunately, we are still backlogged with transferring Model 3 vehicles to a new account due to the high volume of requests. We are hoping to have this completed within the next couple weeks, but have not received an ETA at this time.

We appreciate your patience as we work to resolve this matter for our customers. Thank you for understanding.

Best,
Been waiting patiently for my invite to arrive. It has been two years this past last Friday. 3/31/78

We ordered through brother's account, who had an S. Here is how we did it:
1. Configured using brother's account and paid the $2,500 through his account (using my Credit Card)
2. When you configure you must put the registration name in your name
3. 3 days to pickup - pay in full through brother's account (using my EFT)
4. Pick up car - used brothers Tesla App to sync key and sign in
5. 1 Day later - Service rep number on tesla sight, called them and this was the process
A) I need to transfer a car under my brother's account, but registered in my name
B) They gave me an email address to send the following items:
-Copy of Registration signed at pickup
-Photo ID
-Tesla Account want to transfer to
C) Once they got the information the sent an email to me and my brother notifying that the transfer would occur.
D) They said it would take up to a week, but it was done the next day <24 hours.

How long ago did you do this?

Just to add another data point. My dad took delivery of his 3 (on my account) on March 9th (3/9/2018). We were told right around then about the hold on transfers. Supposedly only two people at Tesla were in charge of them, and they were secondary jobs for them.

Since delivery he did get access to the car through his own account, but it's certainly still actually attached to me. I can see it both in the app and via mytesla.

Did anyone get their transfer requests completed yet. Its been 3 weeks for me and still waiting for my model 3 to betransferred to my account. No replies from my email queries to serviceNA and its frustrating that a premier car company like Tesla could not get this done in a timely manner. Anyone have any luck with this process?

Still waiting since delivery on 3/23.

I feel like I've posted this at least a dozen times, but one more time won't hurt :).

You can transfer ownership after delivery has occurred.

1.The current owner should email [email protected], subject line: Ownership transfer. Mail from the same email account you use for your Tesla account.

2.Supply the VIN you want to transfer, the Tesla account address of the new owner, and legal documentation (such as a Bill of Sale or title) showing the new owner. (Registration won't work.)

3. Wait. It usually doesn't take long, but it's how to get it done. The good news is that other phones can be set up as a key, so it's mostly inconvenient to the original owner before transfer.
If some of you are trying to do this because you bought someone's reservation, no judgment here, but hopefully the seller told you it wasn't immediate. Personally, I think the seller should be willing to allow you access to their account while you wait - but unless you're friends or family, they probably won't want to hand over their password.

Update: And yes, I've successfully done this for my sister. Also note that it won't work to do it from your Tesla account as some have suggested.

Hi Bonnie--

Thanks for update and info.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a glitch in Tesla's system since I followed the instructions to a T for my son's 3 and it's been over a month without change. They did issue him an account but the car is still on my account.

Lol: he's taken a few trips and supercharged...guess who Tesla is billing for his energy????

I've heard that there are so many requests to transfer ownership that they're backlogged about a month.

FYI, I made sure my sister's credit card remained on my account until it was successfully transferred, so that any supercharging was billed to her. I love her, but she can pay for her own electrons :). Unless she's visiting. Then she can charge off my electricity.

I escalated - original post is over here: model 3 still not transferred to our account after 2 months

or if you don't want to leave this thread ...
