The VIN was in the source pretty much immediately after accepting the vision prompt yesterday arvo

That's a long time between builds and getting assigned. There is to many to be assigned from cancellation.

In the US they are saying it's a 2023 model, someone that has their VIN if they decode it using the VIN decoder online that I shared yesterday and let us know. I have a hunch it'll be 2022 which still has ultrasonic sensors.

may be left over excess stock from other RHD export that they are now assigning on other smaller ships on route to AU (outside the Armacup schedule). based on:
1. They were not producing for AU on 3/10
2. the VINs have not arrived in large numbers yesterday and today that suggest small numbers
3. Veda said they are assigning VIN at factory during the build and not while they are on ship anymore, meaning less likely these are on Morning Crystal or Passama
4. inline with Tesla's comments on distributing exports through out the quarter from now on in small numbers on which ever ship has spots available at cheaper rate

Odd that here and other places (e.g. Facebook) doesn't have any reports of Feb orders from those locations with VINs yet.

I'd love to understand Tesla's business process in that regard - EG: whoever is in charge of the VIN allocations, what criteria they apply etc. Is it like a luckydip? Or is there actually some sence to it. At the moment, I can't make sence of it.

Yup, but I was reiterating his earlier post he made in this forum (which I understand now that does not apply to this VIN batch). I can go and confirm the post number. I was not introducing new information outside this forum.
