Impossible to tell. If one is redirected from, say, Mt Kisco, less than a day. If it's coming from Freemont...a week. That's just in transit. Finding one....anyone's guess. Recall, vins and sales appear to be from Freemonth before put on a carrier. So what you'll likely get is one destined for showroom stock.
This is why it would be best for Tesla to tell customers when their car is ready for pickup, not enroute. However, if your insurance and contracts have to now be changed...yeah, they should let you know there will be new paperwork.
It’s probably not feasible for them to do so with their current setup unless people are paying cash or financing through Tesla.

I at least need enough time to contact my lender with the vehicle information and get another check sent out.

Perhaps, once they reach a less frantic stage with production and deliveries and/or get more lot space so that they can keep cars around longer, they can change how they do things.

Well, you're behind me in res and config date. If you get your car from Tysons before me I'll be pissy.

As would I if someone behind me jumps ahead. But we have a different body color and wheels, so who knows. If I saw someone behind me with my exact configuration and delivery center jump ahead, then grrr. And I know that has happened. Of course, the frustration is with Tesla, not the other customer.

Not sure if this has been confirmed here before but I am:

non-owner
5/2017 reservation
7/31/2018 configuration
non-P AWD MSM 19" sport wheels EAP, no FSD

I called today to just check on the process - no VIN yet. I've been back and forth on whether to switch to white, and so they sent me an email with this text:

Thank you for contacting Tesla Support. You have recently reached out to us to request a design change to your Model 3. Please provide the following information in order for us to process this request. Please be aware that any order modifications will delay your delivery date.

Reservation Number: (RN-)
  1. Options to add (if applicable):
  2. Options to remove (if applicable):
  3. Any additional detail:

So even though I haven't had a VIN assigned yet, they are saying up front that any modification WILL delay the delivery.

I was told, don’t change anything. Your car will be delayed if you do

I think I've been a bit misleading in couple of the charts. Most orders which received a VIN have also received a Delivery date (not either/or). So I've adjusted how I show these calculations so that the stacked bar is the total for that period:

The percentages are as follows:

Sorry for any confusion!

I just called for a status update. No VIN. Basically no info. Rep said he could see I was "75% into the process of my order," and I clarified with him that has nothing whatsoever to do with VIN assignment or build status, it just refers to the paperwork steps I have completed. Yeah, I already knew that. (Though actually that's not even accurate. There are 4 steps -- registration, payment method, driver's license, insurance -- and I've completed all 4 since I'm paying cash. So no idea where 75% comes from.) Uggh. I know I'm a relatively late reservation holder compared to most here. But still, uggh. This process is pants.

He said once I have a VIN and a delivery advisor is assigned, they'll give me a much more accurate estimate, walk me through the process every step, and become my best friend. (That's not how I would describe many of the accounts on here.)

He also said he's seen two people who had my same status on Thursday or Friday last week who subsequently got their VINs, so it can happen any time. (Um, it's a rolling process, so, yeah.) That seems very strange to me. Why would this guy be tracking VIN assignment status of random customer inquiries he received days ago? It's not like he will be following up with the customer, or that the customer could ever reach him specifically again. Nice guy, but I think it's human nature (for some humans) to be encouraging, and these reps basically make up their own talking points and go with it.

not a prior owner
reserved: 8/4/17
ordered: 6/30/18
delivery estimate: Sept-Nov
location: Tyson's, Virginia
silver metallic
AWD
black interior
Aeros
current status = nada (no VIN yet, no one assigned from the genius bar yet, will paying cash but still can use URL to get to edit design page)

I see people with delivery dates scheduled into late September at this point, which is 1/3 of the way through my estimated delivery window. So, come on Tesla, WTF.

I have the same config except 19’s instead of Aeros for Tysons.
Reserved 4/1/16
Ordered 6/30
No vin yet.

I don't understand how Tesla is promising 2-4 months for brand new orders at this point. From that chart, it seems they still have a long way to go filling orders from days 1-2.

People have about four more days to place an order that Tesla estimates will still be delivered this year. So they may see a bit of a spike.

Or the spreadsheet retention rate is low and people just move on once they have their cars.

Just found out I have a VIN assigned. VIN 772XX.
AWD, MSM, PUP, EAP, 18" Aero. 4/6/16 Reservation, 6/27/18 Config
I'm in Massachusetts
Is 772XX a high VIN at this point?

Welp, that's my config, with a 4/1 reservation (actually 3/31, but it's registering as 4/1 for some reason) and 6/27 config (current owner, in CA). Certainly not mad at you, but there doesn't appear to be a rhyme or reason to their delivery order. The lack of communication is maddening.

Well the web site updated to have the check mark next to the VIN (same VIN I had in my MVPA on 8/16). But, the delivery specialist called today and pushed back the delivery date 6 days. Delayed in shipment somewhere... They (or the Dallas delivery center) will contact me next week to update me on the status. Tentative original date was 9/1 pickup, but they did say it would probably move a few days. Now it is 9/7, I hope the day holds. They did say it was possible the center could call me if it was ready for pickup earlier... Not holding my breath.
