Beware paying with personal check

In over 50 years of checking, I've never had anyone get my check debited to my account twice. I suppose it could happen.
I've not had a problem with a cheque, but I had a merchant's credit card system go berserk and run a $300 charge through every day for two weeks. Since it was a credit card, and not a debit card, the merchant just reversed the charges. No harm no foul. Had it been a debit card it would have been far different. I've also had a bank teller give my money to some stranger off the street. The bank did refund the money.

Unless the amount is very large, no human eyes inspect the millions of checks processed every day, it's simply not possible or cost effective. It stinks when it happens, but it's actually covered in the T&C you agreed to by opening your account. I know years ago anything less than $25 k ran through with no eyes on it. That amount could very well be higher these days... And I suppose could vary by bank.

It shouldn't require human eyes to prevent this. The computer system should be able to look at the check number and reject duplicates.

Bumping an old thread but tesla just somehow deposited the same check in march of 2018 they deposited originally sept of 2017. BofA didnt catch it or do anything and Tesla moves me back and forth from finance to delivery specialist. I couldnt believe it!

Banks are bad , but IRSis worse. A doctor sent a check with his return to pay the remainder of his taxes. IRS misapplied it and demanded payment. He sent a photocopy of the check and IRS cashed it! That overdrew his account so bank refused it. IRS went after the doctor for a bad check. I never heard the end of the story, but it had been going on for 2 years when I heard the story from an IRS employee.
