They want to see if the car is doing enough to ensure the driver is paying attention. This seems like a valid line of inquiry especially if all the accidents were due to drivers not paying attention with AP engaged. IIUC Tesla has recently worked on improving this using the internal camera. Eleven crashes out of over 3 billion miles driven doesn't seem significant but since Tesla is a leader in this field, it makes sense to see if there is room for improvement. Perhaps there could be further improvements where car alerts the driver when it detects emergency vehicles. Investigating eleven accidents where a Tesla on AP crashed into an emergency vehicle does not seem like a waste of resources to me. If it's going to help make my car safer, I'm all for it.
It's totally legitimate for the NHTSA to investigate why this may be happening but it's also frustrating because everyone should be paying attention driving with AP and there's no way I wouldn't disengage AP to navigate around emergency vehicles or any other obstacle I thought I may hit.

The problem is the media completely overreacting to the news every time. They always get the facts wrong and the headlines are so sensational. I get articles sent to me all the time from my family who know I have a Tesla and it's so annoying. It seems like everyone who isn't an enthusiast sees these stories and believes Telsa's have "serious safety issues" and it's kind of exhausting to try to explain the reality of the situation.

Been lurking this thread and got VIN a few days ago.

For the Final Payment piece, is it just me or absurd that Tesla only accepts Plaid for electronic bank transfer? I am not sure if I am comfortable in providing my banking credentials to third parties (no matter how secure they claim to be). Anyone else dealt with this? I am in WA state BTW.
Same here ... no chance in hell I would use Plaid, found a workaround to just enter routing#/acct# but still don't trust it and it's besides the point.
I'm taking delivery on 8/26 and just got back from the bank with a cashiers check payable to "Tesla Inc."; you also need to have your name and RN# on check's memo. I would suggest you to do the same ... in addition, it's easier to keep the check if you reject the car during inspection for whatever reason and have to deal with Tesla repairs, delivery reschedule, etc. etc. etc.

Long time watcher of this thread, and recently signed up to provide an update.

Order info:
Ordered May 26th - Delivery to Service Center near Phoenix, AZ
- MYLR, White exterior and black interior, 7 seats, 19" wheels and nothing else.

EDD:
- Been Sept 16th - Sept 30th for 3 weeks, and today jumped to Aug 27th - Sept 8th.
- No VIN at this time has bee found or provided.

Final Payment info:
Chatted with an helpful Sales/Order rep, who informed my there is now an e-check option when providing final payments. You can use a service called "Plaid... or something like that name" or you can directly input your account and routing number when making the final payment. I was informed Tesla does not want a physical check (odd).

Additional information:
Was told by the helpful Sales/Order rep, I have a delivery specialist assigned to my car (news to me) and they will be reaching out today with additional details.

Hope this information helps someone either waiting for a similar Model Y or in the Phoenix area.

Someone talk me off of the MYP LEDGE? I am so tempted to spend the extra $5K and switch my MYLR to a Performance model. Seeing all these VIN's go out for P's is out of control. lol. Talk me down folks.
No can do! ;-) get the MYP!! unless you're willing to wait for at least 4+ months for the MYLR you just ordered as it will take forever! no joke.

I had the same call with someone from the delivery center. As far as Final Payment, whoever told you Tesla "does not want a physical check"? that's incorrect. I'm taking delivery on 8/26 and will pay with cashiers check in New York ... maybe it's different for Phoenix but I doubt it. Tesla does accept checks as per their own website:

Govt can investigate all they want, they got to spend money and look like they are doing something. What I just don't understand is how they're thinking this is the fault of the car maker.
Oh an that article says no other car does self driving, that's a lie
...This leads me to agree with someone who said it's ICE makers lobbying against Tesla.
1. I don't think the crashes are the fault of the carmaker. The govt doesn't think this either. That's why there is an investigation. The purpose to collect evidence and determine causes of the problem of people crashing their cars into emergency vehicles, and recommend actions (spanning the spectrum from recall to no action). If they actually thought this is the fault of the carmaker they'd issue an immediate recall. What the problem is training, education, marketing, and communications (my opinion).

2. No car does self driving. That is not a lie, and that is not an opinion. This type of thinking could lead people to take unnecessary risks.

So far as I understand, whether it's Tesla or Acura or XYZ carmaker, you need to have hands on wheel, foot at the ready, paying full attention to take over immediate control at any given time. In other words, 100% driver-driving, 0% self-driving. Does everyone operate this way? Hell no. Ultimately, yes, it's the driver's responsibility, but somewhere along the line people think their cars have some form of "self-driving". I have no problem with the govt standardizing the driver assistance language amongst different carmakers to get rid of confusion/misinformation.

Pretty soon we are going to see Level 2 driver assistance in every car. Without standardization and regulation I can easily see a future where Tesla has one definition of "full self driving capability", Toyota potentially calling it "full self driving ability", and Honda calling it "full self driving superpilot" (or some other confusion language)...and every single one of those systems operating differently, requiring different amounts of driver input. It's a complex problem with lots of variables, and whatever regulation is recommended needs to be evidence based, and collecting/analyzing evidence takes time and money. IMO not a waste of money, and I have not seen evidence to suggest this is some nefarious plot funded by ICE makers to kill off Tesla.

I can second you should be able to bring a certified check with the difference that you owe upon pickup of your Tesla. I only prefer this option because I want to inspect my vehicle before I give them the remaining balance.

It's a trap! 🙂 I suppose it depends on how urgently you need a car. I wouldn't do it personally, I'm sticking with my MYLR order. I'd rather spend my $5k on other stuff. (accessories for my Tesla when it arrives!) ;)

I can't talk you off the ledge. I made the jump when I saw the huge difference in wait times. Earliest MYLR dates were showing 12/21 versus 9/21 for MYP.

OD 8/16 - New EDD has moved from 9/2 - 9/30 to a smaller window of 9/6 - 9/18. Target is getting smaller!

MYP | Deep Blue Metallic | Black Interior | No Tow | No FSD

I’m with you on the reasoning level. Don’t need it, but like everyone,; want is the problem. Lol. I do like those induction wheels. Hmmm
