U.S. asks Tesla about Musk tweet on driver monitoring function

A Dec. 31 tweet suggested drivers with more than 10,000 miles using Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) software system should be able to disable the “steering wheel nag,” an alert that instructs drivers to hold the wheel to confirm they are paying attention. Musk responded: “Agreed, update coming in Jan.”

NHTSA Monday said it “is in contact with Tesla to gather additional information.” The Associated Press reported NHTSA’s statement earlier. Tesla did not immediately comment.

NHTSA is reviewing whether Tesla vehicles adequately ensure drivers are paying attention, and previously said evidence suggested drivers in most crashes under review had complied with Tesla’s alert strategy that seeks to compel driver attention, raising questions about its effectiveness.

So long as the software doesn't suck, I'd argue the internal camera should be a much better indicator of driver attention vs. steering wheel nags. The wheel doesn't detect hands, just torque, which has caused a plethora of problems from users both trying to legitimately use the system and from those trying to game it. We'll see what happens!

Spidey senses are suggesting a major highway regression in the first release. Y'all be very careful with this one.
Will require a careful staged rollout. Anything late this week the following week will be to the single digit numbers of employee cars, then to the early adopter including YouTubers, all before the 285,000 community.

It will be interesting to see if there's a separate toggle and/or a new separate caution and acknowledgment button to enable new stack highway NoA. Regression versus improvements are TBD, but certainly it will be different, and not everyone follows or or comprehends the significance of the highway change.

Technically, Elon's tweet prior to this one said two weeks on January 7. And this Tweet sounds like he's saying 1-2 additional weeks. So if it comes out within the next week, that's within two weeks of January 7.
This timing works out great for me since my ADAS/FSD Computer died (under warranty) during the winter holidays and won’t be replaced until next week. Lookin’ good! 😜

I doubt it will get released that way .... it still needs to go through wider employee and then youtubers. We'll see regressions in youtubers videos, if there are many.
....and because this is such a MAJOR release it will likely require at least an update or two once it is released to influencers adding more time. I suspect after the first influencer release it will be at least 3 weeks before most of us have it. This is such a fundamental update that is very disruptive and since it is already a year in the making and still not released, assuming a fast and smooth rollout is some real "pie in the sky" wishing.

I bet Tesla is going to be very cautious and this will be a sloooooow small roll and stop and roll and stop rollout. No way can Tesla afford a 10.3 debacle with >100k people at 80MPH.

We've heard comments from some early youtubers that some employees have been testing V11 since last month so it will be interesting to see if Elon means the next phase is to go to early YouTube influencers. And just think we'll finally get to sunset the 10.69 thread in the near future. Can't happen soon enough :)

One infamous Twitter FSD influencer is tweeting a promised cross country run before the end of the year. Any bets it sets off a viral video click-bate contest with multiple influencers trying to out-do one another? Gawd forbid something bad happens to an innocent bystander but at least videos can be used in a court of law.

Err... Unless they're promising to do it blindfolded, what makes a cross-country run any more dangerous than the hundreds of thousands of FSD Beta drivers on the road today?

He said two weeks ready for wide release last time. If we remove the weasel word "ready" and just wide release in two weeks, then that isn't happening for another two weeks or more.
