Firmware 2019.16 features

Right but for now going to the software screen isn’t actually requesting if an update is available. It’s simply showing a notification that one is available, pretty much like before.

My understanding is that the new feature in 2019.16 allows you to get updates faster. So yes, the update notification still shows up on your screen but you will get bumped up to get those notifications sooner. Basically, the old way, certain cars would be due for an update based on type and geo location and when Tesla flagged your car, then your car would give you a notification that an update was ready to be downloaded. Now with 2019.16, as soon as your car matches the right type and geo location for an update, you will immediately get the notification that an update is ready if you select the "advanced" setting.

Got the update yesterday. The new visualizations are really nice. It’s a really nice view when you’re behind a few cars and don’t have cars to your sides or behind. NoAP was really good on the 40 miles I drove on the freeway (110 to 91, and then again in reverse), and it felt to me like it handled the interchanges more smoothly without as abrupt a slowdown. Got a really weird glitch though: while on AP at a red light, the car visualization of the car behind me freaked out, twitching like crazy. After a couple of seconds of this, AP gave me the freak out red hands alert, shut off AP, out the car into park, and then turned on the hazards. Second time it’s happened to me, the previous time was on the previous firmware. Not a big deal since I could just shut off the hazards and put the car into drive, but just a really strange glitch.

Was the twitching car representation rotating back and forth in place? I've seen this off and on while stopped in traffic on local roads since firmware 8.5 (I think). I only use AP on the highway, so I didn't get red hands.

Yep. It was like the car was having trouble identifying the orientation of the car behind me. It would go from a straight icon, to a sideways car, and twitch back and forth between the two, and in the end just gave up completely. Has only happened twice, both times the same day I upgraded the firmware, so maybe the cameras were calibrating? Dunno. Not a big deal, but really strange.

Kind of like this?

I was updated the 2019.16 on Thursday, but I was also working with a technician in a diagnostic team regarding a couple of issues with my car. I was at a service appointment at the Minneapolis store that afternoon, and they told me that 2019.12 was the latest available. I get into my car once they were done with it and get an update notification, not sure if that was coincidence or not.

Outside of the visual differences on the display, the biggest thing I've noticed is that Autopilot seems to behave more "assertively". It's hard to describe, but on NOA it seems to be a bit more aggressive on Mad Max mode, and it seems to do a better job tracking lanes and merging with traffic.

I love the option to enable Sentry mode by default, I have to wonder if this will eventually filter down into lower insurance rates as the criminal community realizes what a bad idea it is to break into a Tesla.

Something I just noticed about the 2019.16.x update: it changes the file format used for TeslaCam videos (dash cam and Sentry Mode) to the newer, more efficient HEVC/H.265 codec/format.

That means your computer (or whatever you're using to play back the video files) needs to support this new video format. Recent Macs should handle it just fine, and Windows 10 should be able to play them after installing this HEVC extension from the Windows Store.

Both of the apps I've tried (Sentry Keeper and TeslaCamViewer) fail to play videos recorded on 2019.16, and I suspect the app developers will have to update them before they work.

The web app created by @jdeskins, TeslaCam Video Player, works only if your browser supports HEVC video (which right now means Safari on a recent version of MacOS and Edge on Windows 10 with the HEVC extension installed). Note that as far as I can tell, Chrome does NOT support HEVC, and I didn't find an easy way to make it happen. If you use the web app, just use Safari or Edge as a workaround (I've replied to the developer to let him know, but I don't know if there's much that can be done in browsers that don't support HEVC).

Just something to be aware of as 2019.16.x starts rolling out. If you're one of the lucky few that got it already, and you're having trouble viewing your TeslaCam videos, this is probably why.

The insurance rate should come down when the REAR CAM is also included in Sentry mode.

Thieves will just figure out to break in and enter to remove USB memory key(s). New revenue stream opportunity for Tesla to offer "Sentry Cloud services".

Took delivery of my Model 3 this past Friday. Built 5/19. Took delivery at the Tesla Service Center.

The delivery specialist told me that I had a software update available, and that it should prompt me to install when I got home.

It did. But it failed. No reason given. The current version is 2019.7.106 (????)

So far wasn't asked to update again...

I don't even have Sentry mode.

Contact Tesla service and let them know that the update failed. When this happened to me in the past they pushed the update to my car again and it installed successfully on the second attempt.

Before I contacted them, I just received notification on my phone of an update. This was about 40 minutes ago.
Installed the update with no issues at this time, and now I'm on 2019.12.1.2

No 2019.16 pushed for me.

Same thing for my new 3 that is 9 days old, I also started with the 7.106 version then was pushed to 12.1.2 on day 5 and then a two days latter went to 16. I was having issues with camera calibration and in contact with service, so not sure if that drove the updates or not.

It sounds like your car has the new v3 computer. I wonder if non-v3 cars will see this as well, since H.265 is way more CPU-intensive to encode than H.264. Anyone with 2.5 hardware have 2019.16 yet?
