Fisker Inc. has shared new photos of its 2019 production vehicle, the Fisker EMotion, which promises a 400-mile electric range and a top speed of 161 mph.

According to a release, “The Fisker EMotion has been proportioned to accommodate an advanced high-energy density, patent-pending battery pack and cooling system. It can be charged through the vehicle’s proprietary UltraCharger technology, charging over 100 miles in nine minutes.”

The release says EMotion’s front end will house a LIDAR system behind a tinted screen to help power autonomous capabilities. Side mirrors conceal two cameras, which enable panoramic, 360-degree views to the driver.

The vehicle will be sold directly through Fisker’s website and planned showrooms, according to the release. Pre-orders for the $129,000 vehicle will begin June 30.

The EMotion is accomplished car designer Henrik Fisker’s second attempt at a high-end electric vehicle. He previously launched the Fisker Karma in 2011, but the company filed for bankruptcy in 2013 and sold its assets to Wanxiang, a Chinese automotive manufacturer. The company was renamed to Karma Automotive.

He is also quoting $129k.

Could it be he is using a next gen chemistry that is too expensive for all the major OEMs but is doable at $129K? And a demonstration of LG Chem's abilities? Especially when LG Chem doesn't have to mass produce just make enough for maybe 1k packs per year?

Well, nearly anything is possible, but I think it's pretty unlikely that he happened across batteries that match the specs of the game changing nano-tech technology he was touting.

Dude is a BS artist, IMHO.

I hate everything about this Fisker company:
  • Fake features ("solar panel" that doesn't even carry its own weight; nonexistent UI; uncomfortable as hell; doesn't work well)
  • Fake names (karma, emotion)
  • Disgusting cars and names
I've seen the personal reviews, the disgusting marketing, and the cars in person. Ew, gross, and get away!

I really hope this isn't what the market wants; my respect for human kind would go way down. Compliance cars like GM Bolt and Datsun Leaf are better in my view than this garbage. Of course, we don't all have to compromise so much, and can just go ahead and get a Tesla.

When people like me say we want more competition in the EV space, what we mean is Bolt, Lucid, Ioniq, and a bunch of other ones, but not this! Of course, in a free society, unfortunately, we have to filter some stuff.

I'm sorry for the hate, but it's the truth as I see it.

Fisker claims solid-state battery ‘breakthrough’ for electric cars with ‘500 miles range and 1 min charging

When Henrik Fisker relaunched its electric car startup last year, he announced that their first car will be powered by a new graphene-based hybrid supercapacitor technology, but he later announced that they put those plans on the backburner and instead will use more traditional li-ion batteries. Now the company is announcing a “breakthrough” in solid-state batteries to power their next-generation electric cars and they are filing for patents to protect their IP. Get ready for some crazy claims here.

“Fisker’s solid-state batteries will feature three-dimensional electrodes with 2.5 times the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. Fisker claims that this technology will enable ranges of more than 500 miles on a single charge and charging times as low as one minute—faster than filling up a gas tank.” Here’s a representation of the three-dimensional electrodes:

Fisker has been all over the place with its new Emotion electric car and we have highlighted that in our look at Fisker’s unbelievable claims. But its latest solid-state project is led by Dr. Fabio Albano, VP of battery systems at Fisker and the co-founder of Sakti3, which adds credibility to the effort. Albano commented on the announcement:

“This breakthrough marks the beginning of a new era in solid-state materials and manufacturing technologies. We are addressing all of the hurdles that solid-state batteries have encountered on the path to commercialization, such as performance in cold temperatures; the use of low cost and scalable manufacturing methods; and the ability to form bulk solid-state electrodes with significant thickness and high active material loadings. We are excited to build on this foundation and move the needle in energy storage.”

Wow, 3D solid-state batteries with 500 mile range and 1 minute charge time! May have to cancel my Model 3 reservation.

Oh, wait, weren't these the guys who were going to upend the EV market with their graphene supercapacitors? ;)

Sounds great... until you hear the detail that Fisker doesn't expect to mass produce the 500 mile/1-minute charge pack in volumes sufficient for cars until 'post-2023'. Whatever that means.

And they should've added, "We hope."

I mean, EV companies are famous for blowing deadlines. And Fisker has to stay in business until 'post-2023' to bring this to the auto market. Last time out, the company lasted 6 1/2 years before going defunct, so, it might be close.

Also, regular Li-on batteries are a moving target. How much will they have improved by then? How much cheaper will they be by then?

Fisker's announcement is 'WOW!' on the face of it, underwhelming once you think it through.

To me, it sounds like investor-bait. YMMV.
