If you’re not prepared that FSD will be an evolving program over time and that there will be changes in direction, you probably didn’t research your purchase well enough.
And if you do the research, you will not make the purchase.

Every year since 2016, Elon has promised that all Teslas have the hardware for FSD. In light of HW2 HW3 HW4 and AI5, that claim of adequate hardware has never been true. It is unlikely that AI5 will be "The Answer", either.

No reasonable person would buy into Tesla's version of (nascent) FSD in 2018 or any subsequent year. (In early 2018, Musk promised that by late 2018, a tesla could drive in fully autonomous mode, anywhere, with no interventions.) By early 2019, a reasonable person would conclude that FSD has negative market value, and that any customer interested in testing FSD should be paid as a test driver. Now in 2024, that is even more certain. A careful, defensive driver will find FSD distracting and dangerous, and only great enthusiasm for the concept of an autonomous car would motivate such a driver to sign on as a test driver, if adequately paid.

Given the fact that Tesla's software people cannot even make basic things (like a wiper system) work, the likelihood of their doing something more complicated (making a car drive itself) seems incredibly remote.

The notion of actually shelling out money for fake FSD (rather than being paid as a test driver) is insanity. So, I agree. People need to do their research.

But you have zero evidence whatsoever that they will be at the limit of their computational budget and will be unable to have any layers running on top of the e2e network.
Musk's admission that 10 times more compute and 50 times more inferencing capability than current hardware is required seems like strong evidence that they are currently at the limit of their computational budget. Will 10 times more compute work? Track record says no. Too bad that now that Tesla can make an OK car, but bad software, all the other manufacturers are offering attractive EVs. Tesla has no special sauce.
