How crazy am I? Anyone else bought the car without seeing it?

FYI, here's how my insane rationalizing went:

  • I'll get the 40 kW with cloth seats. Save money on gas over the long run. 50K is a TON of money, but it makes financial sense (Teslanomics anyone?)
  • No way I can live without the tech package. I'm an IT nerd after all.
  • Okay MAYBE the 60kW. The performance increase would be sweet, plus the supercharging!
  • News update: $2K extra for supercharging on the 60kW? Seriously?!! 85 kW looking like a better deal.
  • Fine 85 kW it is. Nice and fast, long range.
  • Sound upgrade? It's only 1K... I'll be kicking myself if I don't get it in what's becoming my "luxury" car.
  • Ugh, just remembered that Kentucky charges property taxes on cars, this is gonna hurt every year...
  • New update: $600 a year for maintenance... on a maintenance free car? Really?
  • Holy crap this car is EXPENSIVE! So much for saving money over time. Obsessed at this point however...
  • "You are spending almost $90K on a car. Are you seriously not going to get the performance version, and possibly regret it for the next 10 years?"

That sounds almost exactly like my experience. Mine begins with reading about Tesla in Wired, and then seeing the prototype Model S on stage at Autodesk University. Then deciding to get a reservation (its refundable after all) so that I could keep "in the know" and follow the progress. Of course, I was getting the smallest battery pack, entry level everything, at the time. And then as the years went by, one thing led to another and another, and finally on this upcoming Thursday I'll get my Sig P85...

This has been described in the literature

but $90K+ for this car is laughable

The only thing that is "laughable" is comparing the Model S to the Volvo. I suggest you read more of the Motor Trend Car of the Year field notes where the expert panelists all agree that the Model S actually represents a terrific value. It compares very favorably to cars that cost quite a bit more money and when all things are considered it is an engineering marvel at this price.

Oh I never said I wasn't buying one, like you I want electric.

Lord have mercy. Here's my two cents. Just me. I HAVE read some negative things about the car. Because I've wanted this for a VERY long time, and because I choose to have faith that Tesla is a MUCH different kind of company; I choose to take them with a grain of salt. I also choose to believe the first unanimous car of the year vote in 49 years.
I know that you can find (ICE) cars that have more "stuff" and are a little more "equipped" in some areas. Even some where certain systems work better than those on the S. Probably for the same price or maybe a little bit less even. I don't care. I'm buying this car mostly because I've wanted it for a long time FROM Tesla. I'm also buying it, and paying the amount I'm paying because I want Tesla to be able to make the car YOU obviously want. Which I believe is coming.
I think that's what a lot of folks on the forums miss. I'm not telling YOU how to feel. Just trying to make it clear that for me, it's not a nickel and dime breakdown of what the car is/should be worth. It's about THIS CAR.

You are!.............you could buy a condo in Miami with that money lmao.

A pretty crappy condo in Miami for that kind of money. And it would be completely worthless by the time the mortgage was paid off, as major parts of Miami will flooded or under a major threat of flooding by then do to rising ocean levels. Miami Beach? Gone by the end of the century. Long term, anything on or very near the water in South Florida is a not a very wise investment. Ditto anything ocean-side just about anywhere. Venice here we come!

And a Volvo? Nice cars but among the most over-rated on the planet.

I've had the opportunity to drive just about everything, including Ferraris. IMHO The Model S is an exceptional driver's car.

And I said that when?

Ok, I assumed you were implying that your tuned Volvo was on level with the Performance Model S but I was mistaken I guess. My apologies.

I drove a P85 and wasn't exactly impressed. I currently drive a fully loaded 2013 Volvo S60 T6. It has every option and is very fast, tuned by Polestar. Yes, the Tesla has power and yes it takes off when you step on it, but that's pretty much it.

Okayyyy ... off we all go to another thread, innocent bystanders included. Missing posts can be found over here: . snippiness - Page 9.

Some posts probably should have been divided between this thread and Snippiness.

... I didn't feel like it.

Seriously folks, disagreement and differing opinions are fine. But taking pot shots at each other (even subtle pot shots)? Not so fine.

Mmmm can you FedEx me some cookies

For what it's worth (and bringing this thread back on track), I finally locked in my spec yesterday, I decided against the P85, so just went with a loaded standard 85 instead. So, my final thought process over a period of about 5 months was:

1. A 40kwh will be plenty, and it's only 50k
2. I should probably get the 60kwh for the extra range.
3. If I'm going that far, I should get the 85kwh
4. Well it's only another $10k for the P85, and I get the nice wheels and stuff
5. I must be crazy, I can get an Audi S7 for $30k less, and it's way easier to buy compared to the Model S (I'm in Tx). I'm done with the Model S. Who needs Tesla.
6. Meh, the S7 is just a bigger version of what I have, plus it's not an EV
7. OK, P85 it is
8. No no, a 60 will be more than enough
9. Well now there's a charge for supercharging on the 60, so back to the 85
10. Well now the wheels are going to be another $3.5k on the 2013 pricing, so that makes the P85 even more of a bargain.
11. P85/S85/P85/S85 (continued for about a month since getting the finalize email)
12. Confirmed on a standard 85!

Honestly, the brag-factor on the P85 would have been great, and I do prefer the CF trim and the dark wheels, but those points were not worth the extra ~$10k. Plus with those wheels, I'm be in a world of regret as soon as I manage to scuff one.

@pete8314: I recognize that progression! And I ended up exactly where you did, the primary difference being that I'm already driving mine. It's a big expenditure, but it's a great car.
Don' t forget the seats and headliner are different (at least I think the headliner is, or is alcantara in the normal Productions also?)
+ air suspension and sport TC / suspension
good deal IMO, glad I did it.
Here, at least, tastes may reasonably differ. I prefer the standard headline to alcantara (which looks fuzzy), and I think the alcantara seat inserts look odd and potentially prone to excessive wear/dirt. But that's just my personal opinion. Naturally, more HP/torque is better, but it didn't justify the extra cost for me.
