IMO, "HD" maps are a crutch for propping up for poor software, and a nice plump revenue stream for those who generate & maintain them.
Poor is probably an overstatement here. I would assume even great software with current sensors (ones that can be put into volume products anyway) will require HD maps for a long time to come, to do Level 5 etc. at a sufficient reliability level.
I think calling HD maps "a crutch for propping up our current and near-tem realistic technology limitations" would be a more accurate way of putting this.
