Idaho Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

Dang. The supercharger network is one of the main reasons I went with a Tesla order now, as it helped me feel comfortable I could drive where I drive now and not have to wait 10 years. Thankfully based on the repeated experience of my friend who has his Tesla, and his trips, trips between SV and the Seattle/Portland/California areas are quite doable. Even without Mountain Home. But it will be nice when that is in.

Have you traveled into Idaho? How did it go? Anyone else drive around the Intermountain west including Idaho much? How has it gone?

The areas that kinda concern me are getting up through the central mountains of Idaho toward Missoula (looks like you have to go around to I-15 rather than straight up through Salmon as I would normally drive). And trips into Wyoming toward CO look pretty slim too. Your routes in those areas are not super flexible. And I am guessing due to population, it will be a while.
I have driven through Idaho many times, but mostly just stuck to the interstates which of course are well covered with superchargers. As you have noticed, driving off the interstates with a Tesla is considerably more difficult, but in most cases, it's still doable. Plugshare is your friend.

Plot your route at www.abetterrouteplanner.com. It will pick the quickest route based on your state of charge and where you plan to go.

The freeways are superchargered well enough, although Mountain Home would sure help for when you're driving into a headwind in the winter.

There's a hole though from Ontario, Oregon to Coeur d'Alene along US95 and another along US93 through Salmon, as you indicated. The former has a CHAdeMO in Lewiston, Idaho and Pullman, Washington, which help. South on US95 isn't great either, but again there's a CHAdeMO in McDermitt on the way to Winnemucca.

In both cases you can go around, at some cost in time. Along I84 around through Kennewick to avoid US95, and on I15 as you noted through Lima, Montana the other way. Since you're starting in the middle, you might make it to Missoula from Hailey if you've got good range and under good conditions. Especially once this new plug in Hamilton, MT finishes.

Check plugshare for chargers, and it can definitely be helpful to invest in a CHAdeMO adapter out here to help you out of tight spots in rural areas.

Thanks. I will need to be learning all the tricks. And will have a good supply of adapters, for RV parks, other brands/types of chargers, etc. Bicycle camping, etc., when I don't want to bring the whole truck and camper and all that. Also for powder day runs across the state such as when Targhee has killer pow and it has been dry forever at SV.

@Mrbrock , thanks for the reminder. I had downloaded the plug share app, but had not downloaded the betterRoute one yet. Now done.

What is this new plug in Hamilton, MT out of curiosity?

Tesla continues to frustrate driving north/south through the central mountains with no superchargers on ID-55 and US-95. They even took McCall off of the most recent round of supercharging balloting!

You may be interested to know i recently noticed the addition of 3 Central Idaho entries on PlugShare for DCFCs. None are operational yet but construction has begun in McCall at May’s hardware for a mixed CCS/chademo station. Similar statiohs are listed in Grangeville and Kamiah but have not yet begun construction. These are funded by Idaho’s portion of the VW emissions settlement.
When done these will open a huge chunk of the state for those Teslas with CCS or chademo capability.
For me the drive to Boise will be so much better than veering off to the Tricities and Baker, I’ll just have to take my wife’s Model Y instead of my Model S. :)

Sounds like McCall will be getting a Supercharger station.

Comment here before December 28th to tell McCall city council how useful the chargers will be for us.

McCall is up and running!
ChargePoint 4 dual ccs/chademo 62 kW👍

This will help until the McCall Supercharger gets built.

Also Grangeville is built out with 3 dual ccs/chademo finished but has been waiting for a transformer for last 2 months. 😢

Kamiah is unknown at least on PlugShare.

Clearwater casino’s 2 ccs/chademo (in Lewiston ) have been out of service since September.😭

Finally there are DCFCs to get from Boise to Coeur d’ Alene.

Grangeville’s 3 stall ccs/chademo chargers are up and running.

Boise to McCall is 100miles
McCall to Grangeville is 91 miles
Grangeville to Coeur d’ Alene is 186 miles

Both Chargepoint locations are only 65kW but the US 95/ID55 route is at least available
