Could be different laws in NJ. I did buy one new car when living in NJ in 2012 but I can't remember if they required me to actually list the new car on my insurance. I think in CA we get a 14 day grace period when buying a new (or used) car to add it to our current insurance. It may be different if you don't currently have auto insurance.
We get 30 days in California.

Nine days after receiving my VIN, I received a call from my ISA today who wanted to go ahead and get my delivery on the calendar and locked. Delivery scheduled for 3/29 @ 10am, first delivery of the day. She offered a day earlier but my work schedule was too crazy to miss. Will make it 5 weeks to the day since ordering.

I am scheduled for delivery Mar 26 5:00 pm at Tyco Center, Tysons Corber VA. It’s red aero configured in 02/11. I am not yet assigned Delivery Specialist. I will see if I can reschedule a day or two earlier once DS is assigned. I have been told my car is shipped now.

Emailed my ISA this morning just to check what the current status of everything is. She called me back about an hour ago to answer all of the questions in my email. My Model 3 has shipped (yay!) and is currently enroute. Delivery is still scheduled for the 29th. She also confirmed that my trade-in stuff is all squared away now and that I should be receiving the paperwork to send to my credit union soon.

Shortly after I got off the phone with her she sent me two follow up emails. The first email was confirmation of my scheduled delivery appointment and it listed the following info pertaining to my delivery appointment:

To ensure your delivery goes as smoothly as possible, please carefully review the information below and let me know if you have any questions or concerns:

You are paying for your Model 3 via Third Party Financing:

1. Payment is due upon or prior to delivery. You are responsible for ensuring Tesla receives payment. Payment for any amount not covered by financing can be made either by cashier’s check (made out to Tesla Inc) or electronic payment (ACH/ three days to clear) via your Tesla account.

2. For the financed portion of your payment, if your financial institution will be remitting payment via wire transfer or by mailing a cashier’s check – please ensure the funds are sent at least three business days prior to your delivery date. This will help ensure the funds have been received by Tesla in time for your scheduled delivery. You may also bring a physical check from your financial institution with you to your delivery appointment.

3. Please note: Vehicles cannot be delivered until funds are received by Tesla.

You will be trading-in your current vehicle:

1. Title and registration are due upon delivery (if applicable). Any individuals listed on the title/registration of the vehicle you are trading in must be present for delivery.

2. Payment of all negative equity is due upon delivery (if applicable).

3. Please ensure your trade-in vehicle is emptied of personal belongings.

NOTE: All parties indicated on registration must be present to sign for delivery. Requests for changes to paperwork, such as adding additional registrants, cannot be accommodated on delivery day.
In the second email she introduced me to my Delivery Specialist and also CC'd him on the email. So far so good!

Lots of action with my order today! Just received a text that my trade-in quote was available to review on my Tesla account. Just a few minutes later I received a call from my ISA and she went over a few things with me and answered a few of my questions. I went ahead and confirmed the trade-in with Tesla just after I got off of the phone with my ISA. Tesla is offering me $6800 for my 2012 Ford Mustang which is right around what I was hoping for. My other option, Carvana, offered me $7100 when I got a quote from them. The Tesla offer was close enough that I decided to go with them just for the sheer convenience of dropping off my Mustang at the Tesla store when I go to pick up my Model 3. Now I don't need to worry about potentially being without a car for a few days before delivery or finding a ride to the Tesla store on my delivery day. March 29th can't come soon enough!
PoitNarf, what was the trade-in process like? Do you have to make an appointment to take the car in to the SC to have it appraised? Was the value they gave you close to KBB based on condition and mileage, and if so, was it the KBB private party value, or the trade-in value?

Was thinking of selling one of our older cars, but it would definitely be more convenient to trade it in, as long as they don't low ball.

I detailed my trade-in experience so far in this thread: Trade-In Help?

Basically just needed to provide some info about the car and submit several photos of your trade-in on your Tesla account. They review everything and come back with a trade-on quote that you can either accept or reject. Expect to receive a quote in the trade-in value range from KBB. Not a chance that they would give you anything close to the private party value. In my situation I believe I received a fair value for my trade-in. Very easy process too.

Haven't heard from my Delivery Advisor (or is it Delivery Specialist?) yet, but I checked my Tesla account this morning and I'm now able to submit my down payment through my Tesla account. Taking care of that now.

Don't know if it's the same for everyone, but I received my delivery date shortly after being able to pay from my ISA. I didn't hear from a delivery specialist until yesterday, and they basically just said to be on time for my scheduled delivery tomorrow because there would be group orientation.

Argh! I was hoping since I got a VIN on Saturday that I might actually get the car by the 24th, my self imposed deadline to be able to get the car and drive it on our trip to Florida at the beginning of April (want to get paint correction, Xpel and Ceramic Pro done before driving it too far)
Ha! Leaving for Florida myself on 3/30 and was hoping for the same thing. I configured on 3/5, so I knew it would be a stretch but was hoping some Midnight Silver cars might be sitting around the Fremont lot waiting for an owner. But, like you, I’m not taking it that far without some protection first.

I decided to call because I have to change three of the "completed" items. We will maybe trade in our other car, we will finance and not pay cash, and we will be joint owners. I was told only the ISA (she said something different like Owner Service Assistant) can modify this and that my ISA would call me. I configured 3/1 and have no VIN. I'll be interested to see how long before I get a call. Clearly the ISA is assigned in advance of the VIN. She provided the first name and found it very quickly.
