Longer Build Times With New AP 2.0 Cars

Got the "production started today" email on November 17th. I finally emailed my DS today for an update because I hadn't heard anything since the 17th, and this is what he wrote back:

Hi Electroman,

"Since the launch of the updated autopilot hardware, we’ve seen some longer build times as cars through more extensive quality control measures. Based on our current production rate, I would expect to have your car here in Portland in the second or third week of December. I’ll be sure to let you know as soon as it leaves the factory."

Best,

Your DS

Is this a bad sign that they might be having issues with the new hardware?

I just ordered a 90D with a bunch of options in early November and I'll just say I was able to get some very detailed information on the production status - I can say that the painting took ~3 days. The general assembly portion took less than 24 hours. It then went through QA which found some issues that took about 4 hours to get fixed and approved. Now it's sitting in the yard waiting to be shipped. My delivery date has already changed twice as well getting earlier each time.

Based on the spreadsheet and all the other info I've been seeing, I think my car had a pretty normal production experience. The fact that your DS mentioned QA and autopilot HW makes it sound like QA issues associated with the AP hardware may take a lot longer to address. My guess is that it could be due to part availability since it's still new HW (they had issues like this with the door handles and other areas in the beginning).

In terms of this being a bad sign, I think they expected some issues due to increased complexity and there may be limited availability of AP2 parts, but it won't have a major impact on the overall number of vehicles delivered.

I see you are in VA. Is someone at the DS giving you this info? My delivery specialist has not been able to provide nearly this level of detail.

Just because I'm curious, how do you know the specific days it took to build your car? 3 days to paint, gen assembly @ 24hrs, etc. Again, I'm just curious. The information I received was that Tesla incorporated a 2-step QA process. According to my DS, they are conducting a QA inspection once the vehicle comes off of line, and then the Tesla Service Centers are performing another one prior to final customer delivery. He explained that they're logic is to identify shortfalls at the assembly plant and correct them before they are line/rail hauled out to the Service Center as any issue can be addressed on-the-spot, with parts readily available, and with the intent to reduce the logistical/delivery delay at the Service Center. So, more of a thorough centralized QA instead of relying on a de-centralized QA burden. As of Tuesday, my car was rolling through New Mexico on a train (my DS was able to "ping" the car and get its current GEO). We expect it to roll into Virginia sometime this weekend, and I'm scheduled to pick-up the car on next Friday, 9-DEC in Tysons Corner. (My info is on the spreadsheet under ahisaac).

Not my DS. I've only had 1 conversation with her. I've got a buddy who was giving me some detailed updates. :)

I'm not 100% certain on how long it took to paint, but I've got some detailed info on how long the assembly and QA took. I've got a buddy who gave me some info. Happy to discuss privately with you.

I completely agree with you on the 2-step QA process.

Thanks for sharing the details of the final delivery. Also saw in the spreadsheet that you are getting a P90D with AP2? That's going to be a pretty rare care since they stopped selling the P90D's in early November. I'm jealous... I would have gone for the P90D with AP2 if it was available when I made the purchase!

What did you order? Color, options, battery size etc.

wow that's impressive. do you know someone at Tesla ;) ? My order was confirmed about three weeks before yours and did not hit production until 12/01.

My build is a 60D with AP2 EAP, and pano. That's it. Pretty much a base car.

I don't know anyone at tesla. I just put in my order and nothing special about me. I'm just a regular guy.

I had ordered 11/8. Confirmed 11/15. Just talked to my OA. She said my car was scheduled to be in production week is Dec 5. Now it has been pushed back to week of Dec 12. She still thinks I will get around Christmas. Assuming no more delays.
