I think the one you used zroger73 looks better too. The reason I used the Raco 888 is because the one you used seemed to be best for a recessed install, but mine was a surface install. I can't remember where, but I ran across the Raco 888 cover as being compatible with the HBL 9450A.

What I like about the 888 is that it adds some volume.

The gap between the opening and the receptacle doesn't bother me, but if I had designed the 888 I would have put two more screw holes in there so that two additional screws could be used for securing the cover. I suppose I could disassemble it and drill those holes.
Maybe my post?

The standard flat cover plates are not compatible with exposed work boxes unless you use a mud ring. For a 4-11/16" box something like this:
Steel City 2-Gang 4-11/16 in. Square Metal Electrical Box Cover for 2 Devices 72C17-25RR - The Home Depot
Most of what the stores have in stock is raised, so there will be a gap created and it won't look flush unless you find a flat mudring. I did something similar for my 4x4 box because that was what they had in stock.

If you want something in one piece, the Raco 888 appears to be the only one compatible.

Well, at this stage I'll admit I only read the first of the now 43 pages of this thread. I could have saved time if I had read your post! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who knows about the 888.

If I add the Square Metal Electrical Box Cover you linked to, then will it improve my installation? Not sure it's even possible for me to add it since I would keep the Raco 888.

No will not. The mud ring linked is only if you want to use the flat covers that others have used. I personally would just leave it with the Raco 888 as that's the proper way to do exposed work.

This is what I was looking for:
In wall (old work box) cover for Hubbell HBL9450A

This is not what I was looking for:
This looks like a metal box cover, likely externally mounted, not in the wall.

If you look at the discussion in context, it should be fairly clear the Raco 888 is for exposed work boxes and specifically for an extra large 4-11/16" box.

For a larger selection of in-wall box covers (including white plastic ones), I cover it under this post:

Thank you, I thought I provided enough context in my original request "New Work Box, In wall." but I ended up finding what I needed anyway.
I also had a heck of a time trying to use the forum search to find it. Anyway, found it now, ordered and on the way to Level 2.

have the cheapo Leviton with a 42cu in work box and it’s already pretty tight with 6awg wire. What volume work box is everyone using for the other, much deeper looking, outlets????

I used a 30.3 cu (4x4x2-1/8") metal box.

Then a 5/8" mud ring for extra depth.

Depth is fairly important given the Bryant/Hubbell outlets are deeper.

Leviton 0S701-040 cover (note 2.465" diameter opening, not the standard 2.156")

Found as per detailed post:

Ideally a Raco 813C cover plate would have been the ideal choice as it wouldn't need the extra mud ring and separate cover plate, but couldn't find any in stock locally.

Plenty of space for 6 AWG THHN x3:

Plus the 10AWG Ground:

YMMV if you are using a plastic box.

Thanks to everyone that contributed to this thread. I replaced my Leviton outlet with the Hubbel 9450A yesterday.

Background: when I had solar installed in my home ~4 years ago, I had the solar guys install 2 Nema 14-50 outlets (on 2 different 50A breakers) in my garage, as I knew I would be getting an electric car eventually. Have been using the outlet since 2020 when I got my first Tesla.

Symptoms: Recently, when charging more than 10%, my mobile charger would reduce rate to 16A and give me the blinking red T error. If only charging for a short while, then no issues. When I placed the charger on our 2nd outlet, it worked fine even for a deep charge, suggesting that there may be an issue with the first outlet.

So I ordered the Hubbel 9450: Amazon.com

The box that was used by the electricians was the kind with screw holes on the corners, so I needed the Raco 813c to mount the outlet to the box:

Also ordered an inexpensive torque driver to be able to torque to 75 in-lbs: Amazon.com

Installation notes: Make sure you test that the power is out at the outlet. I flipped off the breaker, and found out that I flipped the wrong breaker when testing the outlet. So make sure you test it before starting on any work. Other than that, installation was straightforward, as you can see from the other posts on this thread. 75 in-lbs is a lot of torque, so those wires are down tight. I jiggled the outlet placed it in the box, took it out after a few minutes and rechecked to torque just in case.

Results: My kid came to visit with my old Model 3 yesterday, so we charged it from 60% to 95% on the new outlet with no issues. Last night, I also charged up my plaid about 15%, again with no issues.

I’m going to be ordering another outlet and cover plate and proactively change out the other Leviton outlet in our garage in the next few days.

The price, seller, and reviews suggest a high probability of getting a counterfeit Hubbell 9450A. I would return that and purchase a Hubbell 9450A from a reputable source.

Or, better yet, a Bryant 9450FR from Grainger for even less. The 9450FR and the 9450A are the same unit sold under two brand names by the same company.

Yup. Also you can get free shipping on that from Grainger on eBay

Sorry to bump this - but does the metal face plate / cover need to be grounded?

And is Zoro and authorized reseller?
Are you asking because you have a plastic box? Note as per my note here, Leviton sells plastic cover plates with the 2.465-inch diameter.

Here's a white one, but there's a variety of colors available (just make sure you are buying one with 2.465-inch hole diameter, not the smaller 2.15 inch):
