Model S to the Nürburgring Next Week!

Would Elon Announce a Nürburgring Visit Without Already Knowing the S Would Beat the Taycan’s Time?

This is from their video of the 7:42 run. Note the track in the lower right corner.

Does the 7:20mins laptime refer to the short lap they apparently did?

The Tesla map shows the short track (19.1km) without the GP track sections.
The Porsche did the full lap (20.8km) in 7:42mins.
7:20mins is not bad for the short lap, but not enough to beat the Porsche on a full lap.

Multiple credible sources outside of Tesla and its fans (German auto magazine, pro Nürburgring racecar driver, etc) have confirmed the 7:20 was a full lap, WITH traffic.

The timing events for the records of production cars being compared have all been on the Nordschleife (north loop). Your picture includes the Südschleife (south loop—now th GP-Strecke or Grand Prix-Strecke) which is not used for the manufacturer racing/timing records.

I understand why they chose the 'ring for this, but it has an unintended consequence. It's a HORSEPOWER track, more so than a handling track. And that's where I think Tesla can have the advantage. If it was a tighter handling track (ie like most race tracks), than it would be much harder for the Model S to beat the Taycan.

Also, I think that's why they think they can shave 15 seconds (15!) off the lap time. As someone earlier pointed out, they aren't even applying full power the whole time down the straights. If they fix that (and make sure the car is ok going 200+ mph), then that could take the time off. FYI, 15 seconds is crazy. It's 3.5% faster a lap, which is huge on a racetrack.

Final note: you noticed Porsche had their Taycan prototype out there lapping when the Model S was towed off the track. Looks like they're trying to up their game as well. Just need an extra 38 seconds...

One thing you can count on is a german company constantly engineering and prosche more so than others. I am sure the Toycan will go faster. I am also pretty darn sure that Porsche has no answer for the new Tesla powertrain and heaven help them when the roadster makes it to market. It is clear now that it will be the first EV supercar.

Just random tidbit of state of German Auto industry and obvious conflicts.
German industry faces an image crisis amid falling sales

Just going to plug this guy one more time; very interesting insights. He is obviously following Tesla closely but more to guide competitors.

You mean a tighter handling track like Laguna Seca?

So glad porsche is upping their game and tesla is responding. Its bringing back 'emotion' to driving which many people had complained is missing in EVs, such as tesla. We all grew up around noisy cars and revving engines, but the paradigm is shifting.

No one is allowed to make a record attempt WITH traffic. So no there was no traffic.

Wasn't an attempt (since they can't do that), but it doesn't mean that they can't go around the track continuously...and that someone on the side of the track can't record the time it takes to do a lap. Also note, Tesla said they "can" do a 7:20, not that they did (thereby not breaking any of the rules).

There was no record attempt. They were just driving hard. Look at that last photo of the 911 broken down. It was a handtimed unofficial lap without the benefits of having a timed lap and no traffic which supposedly cuts several seconds off as there is more straightaway. Next month they return to that track to attempt to get close to 7. That would be neat but I'm really looking for an AI to make a circuit.

Let's face it, this EV sparring should have started three years ago, long before Tesla could "Plaid-up". Audi waited too long to do something with the etron. Same with the others.
The first working Taycan prototypes should have been around while Tesla were trying to fix the FWDs on the X.

No one except Tesla had the incentive to do this back then. Their profits are all tied up in ICE cars, even today.

I'd bet that if Tesla hadn't kept pushing with Ludicrous cars, Porsche would never have built the Taycan or taken it to the Ring.
