We are discussing the 100kWh upgrade/potential disparity over here. I'm going to avoid cross-posting, but I'll just say that I don't see the price disparity as a penalty, it's at least somewhat reflective of the difference in building two packs vs building one.

You already paid for the first pack?

Whats the trade in difference? I mean it could be 10K for upgrade before delivery... 20K for swap out of battery.. and 25Kish to swap out car for a new one.. Has anyone priced this out?

10K on a fairly new car is a decent hit.

You already paid for the first pack?
That doesn't change anything. They still have to manufacture two packs. If you paid $120k for a P90D, had it delivered, then paid $10k to upgrade to a P100D, you'd be out $130k and Tesla would have made two packs. If someone else ordered a P90D for $120k, didn't have it delivered, and paid $10k, they'd also be out $130k but Tesla would have only made/delivered one pack.

This disparity would be more relevant if the recovered 90kw battery was worth nothing. Currently, we don't know the value of either pack. Tesla has every right to charge what they want to for an upgrade, swap. The market will respond and consumer's behavior will reflect if this was the best way to release the updated pack. Now back to the other thread.

I agree, and I've pointed that out. I was responding specifically to the concept that you've already paid for one pack, so the upgrade should be the same.

The 90kWh pack, traded in, doesn't have its full value. Whether it has depreciated by $10k (plus the cost of service) is anyone's guess. Tesla also probably has an incentive to limit takers on that service.

I finally picked up my Mod X 90D on Monday after many years of waiting (I first ordered in June 2013 - and was supposed to get it in October 2014). It's a gorgeous car. At first, I didn't really like the looks of it compared to the Model S. I still think the Model S looks better but the X has really grown on me.

Tesla has come a LONG way since mid 2013 when I first picked up my P85. When I picked that up, they didn't even wrap the cars while they were transporting them believe it or not! When I took delivery of that car, they had to do all kinds of repainting on the hood as it got all dinged up in transport from flying rocks and debris.

This time around the car was perfect. The delivery specialist was thorough and it was more organized. They had a sign welcoming me back into the "Tesla family" and they gave me some gifts. Tesla pen, coffee mug and umbrella.

I've only been driving my X around for 2 days but a few first impressions:

1) The regeneration is much stronger than the S! It's immediately noticeable. I didn't use my breaks too often in the Model S but even less with the X.

2) The window for the windshield is HUGE. I had the panoramic glass on the Model S and I remember I had to get further tinting as it was hot in the constant San Diego daily sun. It's been a while since I felt the heat but immediately I could feel how hot the sun is while driving and DEFINITELY will get the windshield tinted if possible. I did that with my P85. I'll have to investigate the best options and would appreciate any tips from fellow X owners.

3) The FWD's are quicker than when I first saw them in the showroom. They definitely improved this. It was painfully slow when I saw them. But now it's not too bad. I personally think that Elon over-engineered the car a bit with the FWD's but they are growing on me. My kids love them and get crazy excited when we go in the car. Yesterday at school was a fun day for them as everyone thinks they are the coolest kids in school for having a Model X. The funny thing is the kids that are in 1st grade know more about them then their parents. The parents that never have seen them think it's something out of back to the future.

4) Auto pilot works great in areas where you're supposed to use it. I haven't tested it extensively but used it a few times and worked flawlessly.

5) I still miss Apple Car Play and really wish they would move to that. Still can't believe they don't have it.

6) I was holding out for Autopilot 2.0 but not sure when it would come out and didn't want to wait. I figure that the car will constantly have features that I won't have with constant upgrades/additions. (My P85 didn't even have Autopilot and many other things). But I really wish it had 360 degree camera or even front camera. In my wife's Escalade 2016 it's crazy easy to park in the tightest parking spots as you can see the entire 360 degree angle and see the lines in the parking lot.

7) The seats are MUCH more comfortable than my old Model S.

I'm going to love driving this car.

Great review. Thanks

I am having difficulty understanding what is there more to improve on AP 1.0 on the highways. It just works. And on the surface streets, I am not sure we have the technology today to make AP work reliably. So I am not sure AP 2.0 would end up doing anything more than what we already have today..

From what I've read/hear, the next potentially step in AP is 1) improved sensor range, 2) better detection of non-metallic objects thus with improved cameras, 3) better recognition of potentially stop lights and stop signs.

I don't expect AP2 to be level 4 fully autonomous still, perhaps AP3 or AP4 in future years, 2020+, but it should allow for more software intelligence at least.

Either way, AP2 forward crosses a point where its important more to those people who want to unplug and not have to drive themselves as much or less important for people that want to remain engaged and drive.

Thanks everyone. I thought in AP 2.0 the cameras were going to get a big upgrade. Does anyone see the 360 degree view of the car coming anytime soon? The Mod X definitely is wider than the Model S and the 360 degree camera is really great for parking.

I agree AP 1.0 probably will suit most people's needs. But so many people feel like they are missing out if they don't have the latest and greatest and newest. Honestly, for me moving from 2013 P85 without AP this feels like a big upgrade.

I know it's early but my biggest worry based on other friends that had the Mod X early and ALL were having problems with their FWD's I was worried and even delayed my order a bit. But even in my tight garage where I have my other car parked and shelving, no problem at all. Works perfectly.

One minor annoyance is I wish I could get the back trunk to open all the way in my garage. There is plenty of room but not sure if there is some sensor that is making it only partially open but only opens half way and then I have to push it up. My Model S, I'd set it and it would always open all the way to where I set it.

This. Badly needed in the Model X. I have no idea where the front of my car is nor where I am in a parking stall without opening the door.

Got my Model X 90D this past week.

Originally ordered it in May.

Had some minor fit and finish issues that they're sending up a Tesla Ranger to fix up.

Loving the car so far. Best vehicle I've ever owned.

A few things in no particular order:

  1. I wish there had been a 100D when I ordered. I didn't order the P90D because it had slightly less range and range was the deciding factor for me.
  2. Wish I had known about the dual charger. It was either hidden or I just missed it. Northern Michigan has a lot of destination chargers that would make traveling more relaxing.
  3. Very much enjoy auto pilot. I wouldn't say it's perfect on high ways yet (I am pretty vigilant). But it does let me mess with getting audible set up or quickly check something on my phone without worrying about running off the road.
  4. I like the big front windows a lot more than I thought I would.
  5. I ordered a rubber mat for the folded down back seats. I wish there was a Tesla brand mat.
  6. Apple Car Play would be really nice to have.
  7. The mic seems to pick up a lot of background noise on calls.
  8. I just took it up north today on its first real trip. Spent an hour or so today installing a 240v circuit at my cottage here to charge faster (3mph to 26mph).
  9. I really really like the falcon wing doors. To the point that I'm getting annoyed when I hear them called a gimmick. They're not. Super useful for getting things in and out of the back part of the car.
  10. Getting the dual charger added post release on newer VINs requires significant surgery. (not a software upgrade). A day and a half job at a service center. I'm nervous about the upgrade as they apparently have to remove the rear end of the vehicle to do it and am wary of having such a disassembling done might result in unknown problems.
  11. Definitely the best vehicle I've ever owned. I like it better than the Porsche 911 Turbo I used to have.
  12. Powered by a 20KW solar array at home and super chargers on the road (mostly) is a happy thought.
  13. Handles a lot better than I expected.
  14. Actual range is much more variable than I expected based on driving style.
  15. Love the front storage space.
Thanks everyone! Been lurking here for a very long time. Glad to finally be here officially.

congrats! there is no dual chargers in the model x, there is either the standard 48amp or high power 72 amp charger. you cannot upgrade it after unfortunately.

This! I was worried that I would get sick of the FWD and I bought into the gimmick rhetoric. But I have 3 small kids and a pregnant wife and getting the babies in and out is SOOOO easy especially compared to the Sienna we used to have. I love the FWD, I don't love the extra attention they get. 8 don't like too much spot light but it's very unavoidable now.

I did (finally), also the Extra Gear show which had some behind the scenes footage. For those that didn't catch it, there's a Youtube here (likely to be pulled down at some point, the link drops you at the start of the review), and the photo version here. I think it's worth mentioning the closing thoughts from Rory Reid:

"Everything changes right now. The Model X pushes the reset button. Forget cylinders and super unleaded. The future is cells and super capacitors. There's no point in trying to fight it, you can't stop it. The future is here. And it's electric."

Very cool.

The video link you posted was pulled down as you predicted. The official TopGear youtube link to the review is below. Awesome review and fun to watch!

I've had my Model X for about a week. I am happy with the way my doors have been behaving, no problems to date. :) Here are my likes:

  • The visibility from the front seat is excellent. The side windows are big by today's standards. The windshield is immense.
  • The touchscreen works fairly well. At times it is a bit of a reach, but I like the fact that settings aren't buried in multiple layers. My Mercedes was much more complicated. It's so easy in the Tesla to favorite a station. Having the full owner's manual at your fingertips is awesome. I've used it to find information about the air filtration.
  • The rear camera is excellent. I do miss the surround view on the Mercedes. Without a front camera, I rely on the parking sensors.
  • This is my first car with streaming radio. Even if the audio quality is fair, the variety of stations is overwhelming. I do miss the richness of my old system. Where is the CD changer?
  • This is also my first electric vehicle. It's so convenient being able to charge at home and only visiting the convenience stores for lottery tickets.
There really isn't much to dislike. I wish the console had better storage and that the fit and finish were better. I'm a happy camper at this point.

DISCLAIMER: I haven't received my first lease invoice.

Consumer Reports just published a rather negative review of the MX, and it's even critical of MX owners, for that matter. Titled "Fast and Flawed" it disses everything except acceleration.

2016 Tesla Model X Review: Fast and Flawed

"In spite of its virtues, the Model X’s complexity, compromised functionality, and dismal first-year reliability suggest that it’s a car for early adopters eager to one-up their peers."
