Model X Screen Shut Off

My car is still at the service centre and they say they have fixed the issue. They say it was down to the MCU screen and IC screen competing for resources and crashing the system. They have now changed the priorities to always put the IC screen first. So I guess I may still be getting the MCU screen go blank still…

when I pick it up I will let you know what it’s like.

That's very consistent with what our symptoms were. First, the IC screen shut down and the MCU screen stayed on for quite a while (an entire 10 minute drive). After the car had been parked, both screens died, but car was still drivable. Then, car was intermittently drivable (sometimes the gears wouldn't engage out of park for stretches of time) and AC stayed on constantly. (Also, iOS app could see the car, but not interact with it -- similarly, roadside assistance could see some warning messages from the car, but not all the data they'd normally see).

It got towed to the service center last night.

Tow truck driver said that he had seen the exact same thing 2 days ago.

Can you let us know what service center exactly? If my local service center doesn't know about it, it always helps to give them another location. (Tesla has pretty slow internal communication).

Seconding this thread. Seen this a couple times over the past month (in both S and X). Today's X version lasted longer than most -- screen was out throughout two different drives and didn't reboot on its own (AC continued to work).

This is for a Raven 2020 MX.
My Raven X 2020 was towed on flatbed tonight. Dashboard went completely dark and the car would not start or shift into drive. I have had the MCU and Autopilot hardware and front axels all replaced... Thinking of getting rid of this headache and going back to ICE.

This one was clearly a bad software bug. They "solved" this issue in my car by upgrading the size of the internal SD card to 8GB. Official diagnosis was that there was too much data in the internal storage and screen resources were fighting to those scarce resources.

That's obviously a software bug.

What I continue to be dumbfounded by on issues like this is why Tesla has such difficulty writing stable releases for such basic computing tasks -- autopilot is difficult and uncharted territory, but video and memory controllers should be fairly easy for a captive hardware system. It's costing them a fortune in third-party towing fees and internal service hours -- easily the cost of several more programmers if not many more.

This exact thing happened to me also last year (I think Sep 2020). What they found was the 12v battery was defective and they replaced it for free. Haven't had that specific issue since then. Only issue now is just my MCU and dashboard rebooting at odd times.

This was my report:

Confirmed customers concern in vehicle logs. Unable to duplicate in the shop
Found internal fault to MCU SDcard and customers USB drive is also corrupted.
Removed and replaced Sdcard and Reformatted USB drive.
Function tested screen for proper operation.

My usb was not corrupt... I was watching it earlier in day before the problems... Whatever.

This car is beyond frustrating.

MCU and dashboard shutdown on me again this past Sunday.
Super scary this time as it shutdown right as I was on the highway.
Luckily it was early in the morning and not alot of traffic, but going at high rate of speed with no dashboard and MCU on and not knowing if my indicators were working was very concerning.

Though what's interesting is that I had autopilot turned on before everything shut off and it was still working as it was keeping me in the lane. When the dashboard and MCU all came back on, it displayed autopilot as enabled. This makes sense since the autopilot computer is separate form dashboard and mcu.

Still gave me quite a scare.

Not knowing how fast one is going while the screen reboots is the issue for me. Mine reboots once or twice every week. Back in April I was given a ticket for over speeding (speed limit dropped from 60 to 40) on an unfamiliar road. I was busy watching the screen reboot and didn't pay attention to the speed limit changing while I kept going at 60. Cop gave me a ticket. This is was my first ticket ever. Never been ticketed in my life. I had Tesla service come in and pull the logs etc and they cleared cache plus more. Did not help. Contested in court and showed them the service invoices and my text messages with the service specialist. Judge understood and dismissed the case! The reboots continue to happen. I just live with it now. Had not had a s/w update in over two months now! Something not right

Quick update from me. Got my car back from Tesla with the applied from Tesla that is supposed to fix the screen blanking issue.
Just had it go completely blank along with the MCU screen on a drive today. It also lasted a long time, much longer than other times it happened.

Does the app still update speed correctly when the screen is dark?

2021 Model X. Both screen shuts off for about 2 minutes while driving. Tesla serviced 3x. Same issue. Claims software update needed.
Mine does the same thing. Just had it in for the second time in a few weeks and they replaced the memory card and did a firmware update. It has the latest software update. TODAY...happened again just two days after the last service.

Don't believe so as networking boots as well. That being said, I *may* have found a work around. I changed the wheel in the system setting to a different size, system reboots, changed it back, another reboot and fingers crossed the reboots have been gone ever since. Worth a try for you all folks.

Unfortunately, this did not work for me as well. As per my last report on July 22the screen shut off for me while on the highway. What I did not mention was the day before, I did the exact same thing as you had mentioned (change wheel size then change it back) thinking that would alleviate the screen turning off issue as the purpose of the trip for the next day was an 8 hour long road trip.

Ever since then I have not tried to reboot my MCU at all and it has not shut off on me....yet.
I do want to note that last week my MX was at the local service center for the shudder issue and a falcon wing door sensor replacement. So not sure if they did anything for this MCU or if they had rebooted the car during the service. Also this week there was an update that was installed version 2021.12.25.7.
Will report back here if I experience any further screen shut downs.
