My CPO experience so far

Add Me. Tesla's CPO program seems to be a mash up of people scattered across the country trying to do a job they've been given no instructions for. There is no transparency and requires a 100% commitment (non-refundable) to get a car locked down in most cases sight unseen (aside from stock photos) and then wait until you actually get to see your purchase at delivery, when they, "I was told" FINALLY make a repair order available so you can see what was done and initiate a due bill for any problems found. AND take possession of a car you have never seen until that day, nor had an opportunity to test drive!!

But... I am doing it anyway lol!! But joking aside the process leaves much to be desired.

Picked up the loaner. Nathan @ Minneapolis store has been very helpful. They gave me a newer 85D. Haven't had a chance to explore all the options yet as I had to get back to the office right away, but already very impressed. This car has better seats than mine (I think they're the "next gen" ones?), autopilot, and it's a D. It also has rear facing seats so we'll get to see how the kids like that (mine has them). The voice control seems to work pretty well. Super smooth acceleration. Now I just hope my slightly older P85 won't feel like too big of a downgrade.. haha. I don't think I'll miss the autopilot as I don't normally drive in places where it'd be useful, but it is neat.

Still sounds like my car should be shipped up some time this week, too.

Maybe I should try to get a Tesla loaner, too! I'm in a very similar situation. Loan was already funded, Tesla was already paid and the first payment is due the first week of August. The leased Lincoln MKZ it is replacing was returned three weeks ago. Ordered car on 6/8/17 and was told 3-5 weeks to get to KC. It was already in Chicago where they were starting the reconditioning process. First told I should have it by the end of June, then that got pushed back a week to 7/7, while my kids were in town and would be able to see it. Called that week and was told it was in the body shop for repairs and it would be the 3rd or 4th week of July. Made an appt for a test drive so my boys (20 and 21) would be able to experience the Tesla. While at the test drive, I met my delivery specialist and showed them pics of my installed HPWC and garage. Told them I was going to California and missed the factory tour by two days. After the test drive, I got an email saying I got into a tour this past Friday. Took the tour, which was cool, but I work at the Ford factory and it's very similar, only cleaner.
I have repeatedly asked for the condition of the car, pics, and parts being replaced. Finally got a list of repairs last week...a few minor things, plus a brand new drive unit. Still have yet to see any pics of the car. Was told it should be back from the body shop mid last week and prepped for shipment to KC. No word since then.

Sounds all too familiar. Me Too!! No pictures of the actual car, No list of what needs to be and is being replaced, Reconditioning started in Palm springs (was told it was in the body shop there) Most recently was told the car is being shipped to my nearest delivery center "or store" to continue the reconditioning??? No word since then. At least I now know thanks to reading the experiences of others that these snags and untruths?? are a thing.

Certainly worth asking. I took a factory in early June after reserving my S as I was in the bay area for a conference anyway. The scale and number of challenges Tesla has overcome to make these cars a reality was mind-blowing. Best of luck with your delivery.

Ive been in a Model X loaner since day 1 after purchase (now 11 days). Oh yea, its a P100DL AP2 with white interior :)
Well played. Though I'm somewhat glad I have a little more sane car for a loaner, or my new car might feel like a downgrade when I traded for in the loaner. Or did you buy a P100D anyway?

I haven't had a lot of time with the 85D loaner yet, but my thoughts so far...

Good:
- Rear facing seats are great. our 3 and 5 year old fit perfectly and should for quite a while. We went out to eat w/ wife, 2 kids, and my sister, and could've had 2 more adults in there comfortably.
- I mainly listen to audiobooks in the car, and bluetooth integration with Audible android app works well. Only minor nitpick is I have to initiate playback from the car - whereas other bluetooth devices I can initiate from the phone.
- Voice commands are intuitive and have worked well so far.
- This car's autopilot seems pretty good. I won't go into too much detail as plenty of other people have tested more thoroughly than I have, and my car won't have it anyway. It's certainly helpful, but the only thing I'll miss is adaptive cruise. For where / when I drive, I wouldn't be able to fully utilize the other features much.
- Plugging into a supercharger and getting free energy is awesome.
- The acceleration, combined with near zero noise and no transmission shifting is incredible. I've had a number of 400-600 hp cars, a few that were technically faster than this 85D, but the instant quickness/responsiveness, silence, and smoothness is so much better for a street car.

Bad:
- The browser is really slow. Slow webpage loads (this car has LTE but it was still slow), very slow and choppy scrolling and pinch-zooming. Pretty terrible as far as modern web standards support goes. Hopefully that improves eventually, but whatever.. we all have phones and tablets for that stuff anyway.
- Mildly disappointed there are no texting voice commands / playback.
- Can't test slacker as I don't have an account and when I hit "Use Tesla Account" (or whatever it says), it says login failed, so I'm guessing the loaner's free access expired.

While I posted this in the other CPO buying experience thread, I thought I'd post here too since there are a couple of other Minnesotans here.

This is my timeline so far, as of last Thursday when I received my last email from them:
7/1 - I ordered late, got the auto-emails that night.
7/2 - I updated my license and insurance info in mytesla and added my trade's VIN, and sent a reply to the DS auto-email asking a clarifying question and still haven't heard back from him (holiday week, so I get it)
7/5 - Received a call from the CPO SA late (while I was putting the kids to bed), voicemail said we'd connect 7/6
7/6 - Talked with the SA (long story in original post)
7/13 - Receive an email from the regional remarketing manager (interesting title) - car is in Denver SC undergoing reconditioning. He said they will provide another update next week with a more definitive timeline.

So far, so good. While I haven't heard anything from the DS in either Denver or here, I didn't really expect to. Everything seems to be moving along nicely.

I ordered a 60, jumped on it when I saw the price and didn't want to miss it. I didn't notice supercharging wasn't listed until I got the confirmation email. Then I asked the CPO SA via email to confirm it has supercharging, and he said it does, his friends get free juice or something like that. So I am really looking forward to the car. He initially set my expectation at around 6 weeks, so I was figuring mid to late August. He also recommended against using Tesla shipping if I want it shipped, as they charge a flat fee based on regions. He said it would be cheaper to fly there, take delivery, then ship it myself or drive it back. I'm thinking hard about driving it back, nice way to see some country, and experience the Tesla on the road.

Congrats on your purchase. I'm ready for my real car, but the loaner is pretty fun and a nice preview. I live literally across the street from the gym I go to, but instead of walking like I normally would, the past 2 nights I've driven and taken a few mile loop to play with things. Wrong on so many levels, but the car is too good.

Being a developer, I think the thing I'm looking most forward to is having my own car in MyTesla that I can manipulate with the REST API for starters.

Update! Was finally contacted by a DS (only after I sought information from the service dept. at the Tempe service center) That's the good news! Bad news is that expected delivery won't be until September 1st. or thereabouts. If that holds true it will be a full 10 weeks from deposit to delivery.

I'm nearing the end of week 9 and still don't have my car, if that makes you feel any better.

The loaner is keeping me sane at least. The car is amazing. I just hope they don't fall apart as a company due to bad logistics like this.

Updates in red!!

7/28 - Saw some new inventory on EV-CPO, which prompted me to contact my SA. He initially said my car would be ready in about 2 weeks. Then after a little chatting about the new inventory, he asked if I can still fly to Denver for delivery. I said if it is longer than 3 weeks I can, but I have plans the next 3 weekends. He then said it is looking to be done in a week to 10 days, so he'll coordinate shipping to Minnesota.

The end is near, which is great! I should keep my expectations level though, as it could be delayed yet.

Took delivery of "Steve" today (... our 5 year old Minecraft-obsessed son won naming rights). They weren't able to get the inspection report yet, so I'm not exactly sure what was done, but I'm impressed.
  • Paint, wheels, seats, interior, the whole car is in incredible condition. My jaw dropped when I saw it, and the closest thing to a flaw I could find was residue around the clear bra edges below the rear liftgate - and I was just pleased it even had a clear bra there
  • Fresh tires all around
  • Surprise factory center console upgrade - love it, much better than the empty space in the loaner.
  • Textile seats look new. Definitely not as supportive as the 2015 loaner's seats, but I can deal with it.
  • They might've given us new rear facing seats... they look brand new and even had a sticker on the back metal latch still.
  • No creaks, rattles, reverberating, nothing - the car is super quiet driving down the road.
  • The front trunk is so much bigger than the dual motor cars. That'll be nice.
I do have one concern though. Immediately on leaving delivery, I noticed the car sways a bit, as if the body sometimes shifts separate from the wheels. Almost felt like being blown around by the wind, so I thought maybe that was all it was, but after driving a lot more today, I'm pretty sure it's not. Maybe just a bad alignment, or a loose bolt somewhere. At any rate, I'll fire the service center / delivery team an email and go from there. In the meantime, I'll search around for threads talking about similar symptoms..

Here are a few pics:

Got a call from my DS today, he said the logistics have been entered to have it shipped, once it is, it should take 1-2 days for it to get here. His guess is 2 weeks, but it depends upon the drivers' schedules. He said as soon as he hears it is shipped, he'll give me another call to let me know and set up a delivery time. It's getting close.

Now with the info out about the 3, I have a day one reservation and was debating jumping on the first run of production when I get my invite. However, I think I'll stick with my original plan to wait for the dual motor versions and get it next summer. I'll get to see how much I use the superchargers with the S, and it's a bigger car which is nice.

Thanks @Kalease

Best of luck. My wife and I also have a 3 reservation and planned to wait for AWD as well. I'm glad we got the S now though. It'll be nice to never stop for gas again.

I called Tesla service department over lunch today and they told me to bring it right in. Went for a test drive with a tech and he agreed that the rear was all over the place. They said it had been aligned with the air suspension in the wrong position or something. They gave it a full alignment and it drives straight and stable now. Very happy with the responsiveness. Called at noon and I was on my way back to the office with the problem fixed by 3. Also had them clean and lubricate the sunroof track as it was a bit stuttery.
