May 26 - I ordered the following through a CPO advisor.

# 22561
2013 Model S P85
Red Multi-Coat
21" Grey Turbine Wheels
Panoramic Sunroof
Black Textile Seats (I'm not a big fan of leather, so that's fine with me)
Piano Black Decor
Carbon Fiber Spoiler
Dual Chargers
Tech Package
Smart Air Suspension
Ultra High Fidelity Sound
Rear Facing Seats
Fog Lamps
Parking Sensors
Premium Interior Lighting
48,526 miles
4yr/50k CPO warranty
$54,000

We really wanted the rear facing seats and this was a better price than we'd found listed anywhere. Of course, a week or two later a lot of 2yr warranty cars came in cheaper, but I'm still happy with the car/price/warranty/etc.

The car was located in Texas, would go through CPO process in Chicago, and be delivered to in Minneapolis. I was told 3-5 weeks for delivery. I'd gotten pre-approved for a 1.74% loan via DCU in advance (they're great to work with so far, would gladly recommend them), but hadn't finalized it because of the long timeline.

June 6th - Tesla delivery specialist called to say I could take delivery on June 15th. That's... surprisingly quick, but cool. I went ahead and finalized the loan (DCU mailed the check to me) and paid the difference of purchase price - loan online. We started planning to take the first week of July off for a family road trip.

June 12th - I emailed to confirm that we were still on track, and they called back the next day saying there was a mixup - the car was actually only just arriving in Chicago by 6/15, and they don't know when it will be ready.

June 21st - Delivery specialist calls and says the car is going through the final inspection stage and schedules delivery for June 28th (Wednesday). Ok, at least this is still before our vacation, no big deal there, but the check from DCU is going to expire soon, and this is already the 5th week from the estimate, so hopefully no more delays.

June 24th - Had some free time and we were near the Tesla store, so we stopped in to show the wife and kids a car like ours (ended up only seeing Model X, but they got the point). While there, the sales people said my delivery specialist was actually in, and had him come talk to me. He said the car would be completed but the delivery trucks may not have room for it right away, or something along those lines. I offered to pick it up in Chicago, as it wouldn't be that far out of the way from where we'd be taking our vacation anyway. We'd just do a 1 way rental or fly down. He said he'd look into it. I sent an email to him as a reminder / clarifying that we're willing to take delivery in either Minneapolis or Chicago, just let us know which is more likely to work for a delivery by July 1st.

June 27th - No response, so I emailed again.

June 28th - No response, tried calling twice, no answer. He called back a while later after having spoken with Chicago CPO team it sounded like. The car is in queue to have bumper and hood repainted, he asked if I would I be able to pick it up on the 2nd in Chicago (a Sunday, seems odd?). I told him I could make that work, but I would need a solid "yes it will be ready" not just a maybe. He agrees and says he'll get back to me.

June 29th - Delivery specialist emails saying the "bodywork has not been completed" (which makes me wonder if it's more than just rock chips/scratches?) and it won't be ready for pickup on or before the 2nd.

So at this point, we're either cancelling our trip or taking an ICE vehicle, defeating the purpose of taking a road trip vs flying somewhere or doing something else. And I'll have to get a new check issued from DCU, as this one will expire in a few days.

I was fine with the original 3-5 week estimate, and completely understand that things often take longer than we want them to. But the initial over-promising, then stringing along a couple days at a time, has me pretty annoyed. I wrote back asking him not to tell me another date until he knows it will actually happen.

I'm hoping the car will make up for the frustrating delivery process. I'll update as I learn more.

My father-in-law, a retired electrician who lives about an hour away, already had a few outdoor NEMA 14-50 outlets for friends to park their RVs by the lake, so we knew we'd be good charging there when we visit. He just texted to say he added another outlet for us in his shop, so we can charge indoors in the winter.

... I don't even have an outlet myself yet. I think it's safe to say he's excited about the Tesla too.

I'm about to start getting quotes soon for a 14-50 outlet. Was debating if I should go with a WMC though, I like the look but they are pricey.

I don't like the idea of grabbing the mobile charger out the trunk every time though.

Because we also have a model 3 reservation to replace my wife's ICE vehicle eventually (only reserved in May, so I'm sure we're well down on the list), we're adding 2 NEMA 14-50 plugs for now. Because we're doing Xcel's EV rate plan, we need to add a 2nd meter, so we're also adding a 2nd 200amp panel that could support 2 HPWCs if we decide to go that route in the future, for the reason you said (not wanting to shuffle mobile chargers around). We're also concerned that in the next few years more EVs will be available, and don't necessarily want to tie ourselves to a Tesla specific wall charger - so if we did add a wall charger, it might be a different brand. In the meantime, the 14-50 should be plenty of charging speed for us, and outlets are cheap, so we're keeping it simple.

It helps that my father in law is an electrician, so we won't be paying for labor on this stuff, just a permit.

If you plan to just charge at 40amps get the 14/50 installed and the WMC. Get a standard 6' range plug from Home Depot (14/50 style) and wire it to the WMC. Just make sure your dip switches are set on the WMC to charge at 40amps.

Best of both worlds. You can leave your mobile charger in car and if for some reason your WMC takes a crap you can unplug it and use your mobile charger. If you hard wire your WMC or only use your mobile charger then if either of them fail you have no charging option. Well if you hard wired you WMC you could charge using a standard 120v outlet but that kinda sucks. You can also unplug during lightning storms or when you go away on vacation to prevent damage from power surges.

I have the WMC and absolutely love it. It looks great and super convenient. We have a S and X and one charger is plenty for us. YMMV. I think it's well worth the money. Plus when I move I can just unplug it and remove from wall and take it with me with no worries of dealing with wiring.

Nice idea. What about using twin chargers with with method? If you have the proper breaker and wiring. Can you get 72 AMPs using this method, or would it be limited to 40 AMPs.

Yeah good idea. I had a sub panel added to the garage in preparation for an EV. Will be adding a 2nd meter as well, for time of day usage through Dakota Electric.

To charge above 40 amps you will have to hard wire the WMC with heavier gauge wire and the appropriate breaker. Some argue hard wiring the range cord isn't to code but if the cord is good enough for my oven its good enough for my car. I've been charging like this for 2yrs with zero issues. The cord doesn't even get hot.

Still no car.

Loan check was expiring and CU advised me to just have Tesla deposit it or we'd have to redo the loan (which would be a pain as we're about to close on a home loan). So the car is fully paid for and we're now 7 weeks into the "3-5 week" delivery timeline with no estimate as to actual delivery.

When I gave them the check, they said the car is getting bumper/hood painted in Chicago and should be ready soon. But they said the same thing on 6/28, so it's been in that status for over 2 weeks now.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I officially put my order in on the 8th (I had some technical issue leading up to that day), but my pre-approved check expires on 8/2. The odd thing is, I brought up the possibility of "using" the check before it expired and my CU advised me against that. He stated things might get tricky if he isn't able to deliver that particular car; he suggested I just re-apply. Luckily for me, I explained to my bank that my car may not arrive until after the dead line and they told me as the date approaches if it seems like it'll be there soon after, I can call them and they could provide a 30-day extension. Worse case scenario is they resubmit my application to the underwriters and I lose 2-4 hours for the new approval. The funny thing is when I told my advisor about the deadline of the check, he told me he'd put a rush on my car! Funny because it seems a lot of people have been told that very same thing and there really hasn't been much of a rush!
So, should we all create CPO experience posts? Actually, now that I think about it, that doesn't sound too fun, but I will post the details of the car I hope to be getting soon!

Sounds like a good deal. Yeah... I just made this post to vent I guess. Guess I'm just hoping the car will be worth the wait.

Do have sort of good news. I have a buyer lined up for the car the Tesla is replacing, so I emailed the delivery specialists last night asking if I can sell it or what the status is. They called today saying go ahead and sell it, they'll get me in a loaner until my car is ready. So I'll be picking up the loaner on Monday, hopefully. Sounds like my car is still in the bodyshop for the bumper/hood paint, no word on when it'll be in, but at least I'll be in a Tesla in the mean time hopefully.

Let us know if your actually get a Tesla loaner given that you didn't accept delivery yet. I read others on the forum say they didn't do this. However they have all your money so hopefully your situation is different.

Good Luck
Thanks. I got an email this morning confirming a Tesla loaner for Monday at noon, so I'm pretty sure they will. Having all the money and having given me multiple delivery dates that were way off probably helps.

I also got a call from the regional CPO advisor in Chicago today apologizing for the delays, etc. He didn't know the delivery folks in Minneapolis had arranged a loaner, and also pointed out that it's not normal practice until after delivery, but said it makes sense in my case. Sounds like my car might only be a couple more days too, but nothing exact.
