Octopus Energy Saving Sessions

Does anyone know how the Octopus ”Power Hour” energy saving sessions are actually calculated?

I’ve taken part in all of them, but the results just seem totally random.

I’ve had sessions where we’ve switched off as much as we can and gone out, only to be told that we didn’t manage to save anything.

Some sessions, we’ve made very small savings, Including one where virtually everything was switched off and the whole family was in another country.

One session I forgot it was happening despite signing up, only to be told I’d managed to save 93% of my normal usage and be credited with over £16 off!

I’ll continue to sign up for them and don’t really do it expecting to save much as we are already quite energy efficient. It all just seems so random.

Weirdly just had 400 Bonus points appear in account.

The missing 200 from 14th December and 100 each for 29th February and 1st March?

Had the same. I think there was a widespread error as I rang them last time about it missing. They finally credited all customers back for this.

Should ‘save’ 7.026 kWh this time for 9,936 OctoPoints (£12.42), bringing credit total close to £600.

Will see if it’s enough to go another month without bill in 10 days time.

20 kWh solar generated so far today.

I have looked into this for you. Due to the multitude of equipment at the property I have carried out a couple of studies with all of the equipment and then just the generation.

For both of these studies the Volt Rise and ELI were within limits so you can have a max export of 15kW.

You will need to get in touch with your supplier so that they can increase this export figure for you against your export MPAN.

National Grid ESO has set the price for the last few Sessions too low. This time, once again, we're choosing to pay for our customers so you can still take part for a fair reward."

Which might explain their somewhat mad bid of £1.75. That was clearly never going to win for a 50mw requirement.

Just looking at the figures for axle energy / givback. They bid at 49.5p/kWh. They take 30%, that's 35p/kWh + your usual export. That barely covers charging losses...

Are they also recording when people do not get notifications ?

I probably receive a quarter of the opt in notifications that are being posted on here. Even if I see a potential event on here that there is likely to be an event and go into the app and specifically look for upcoming notifications I see nothing. I have app notifications on which have worked for some, but I do not do third party apps like wattsapp.

First I typically get to see of an event is the sleeping ghost in the results screen.

I specifically went looking for these as they were being discussed here, but nothing until after the event. I hear some people talking about the web site being overloaded - maybe I just coincide my checks with that?

I got in official Octopus app notification for todays session and was able to opt-in.

Getting notifications these days via app or email is rare occurrence.

Don’t do it for the money, but sitting in the (not quite) dark with minimal distractions is a nice alternative to the first world distractions most of us are surrounded with. Wouldn’t want to do it for days at a time though that some have to endure.

14,968 points so far this season or just under £19 and is a shed load less than last year. It’s a shame about the in-day adjustment but I do believe getting rid was the right thing to do.
