Having bought two EV's and getting a rebate on one of them (my Smart ED), I agree with the new rebate rules. Tesla owners still get a rebate, but not nearly as much as the rebate on a cheaper car. Frankly, my Smart ED is better for the environment due to requiring so much less materials to make compared to a larger car such as my wife's Tesla. And yes, the Tesla is far better for the environment than the gas SUV we traded for it, but we didn't really car much about the rebate as we bought CPO, so the original owner got it...
EV rebates in Ontario made a lot of sense, as I blogged last year (before we got our Tesla):
Smart Electric Drive: Rebates? How dare you take your own money back!
As an EV owner, I am subsidized at purchase time, but will pay back over the life of the vehicle in many benefits to Ontario, not the least of which is using some of the excess Nuclear power we have overnight sold at a loss to the US. EV's are the perfect compliment to baseload nukes. Ontario needs a million EV's to slurp up all that power. Even though all EV's are built outside of Ontario, they use local fuel, whereas ICE car owners are sending money elsewhere.
