Repairing a Flooded Tesla Model S : HOW-TO

Satoshi, I don't get your reasoning. Why should his ripping the top off of a ruined battery pack be the reason "we can't buy parts anymore"?

Yeah, doesn't make sense. Maybe if Tesla provided a proper service manual like everyone else people would actually be able to have a chance at removing parts the right way without resorting to trial and error.

Your thread is a viral addiction--100k views in a month, only wk057 gets more attention than that...

According to my calculations (which are likely wrong), this thread may end up surpassing it in terms of views, not quality though. The hacking thread is for people that are speaking intelligently as specialists in their field.... a playground for nerds that want to flex their brainpower, wk057 started it and he is a very smart guy.

I started this thread as more of an an "everymans" thread, average people with average intelligence, commenting on an average guy that apparently has no idea as to what he's getting himself into.

UPDATE...

So yeah... the moment you have all been waiting for...

CAPS LOCK ENABLED FOR MAXIMUM EFFECT

THE BATTERY MODULES DO NOT LIKE BEING SUBMERGED IN SALT WATER, AT ALL. NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT. ONE OF THE MODULES LITERALLY EXPLODED AND STARTED DISINTEGRATING BEFORE MY EYES, THE HORROR, THE ODOR!!!! BATTERY ACID + HIGH VOLTAGE + SALT WATER = NO BUENO

PREVIEW PHOTO BELOW, MORE TO COME, THIS IS NOT YOUR AUNT'S LASAGNE, THIS IS A TESLA BATTERY MODULE IN ITS FINAL RESTING PLACE

These are lithium-ion batteries, there is no battery acid.

Salt water is a conductor, this likely shorted the cells... the exact thing you want to avoid because of the explosion you witnessed that could also lead to dramatic fires.

Just because a battery is "dead" does not mean it does not have energy stored in it... lithium is a very reactive chemical, although this isn't lithium metal, there is still lithium ions at the anode (hence the term lithium ion battery) that can and will react violently as we have seen here.

You're lucky this only happened to one cell and didn't get out of hand.

So yeah, that definitely shows that plenty of water infiltrated the pack. Given the photos from the incident from the previous owner, I kind of expected that at least a bit of water got in there. I'm going to assume that the tops of the modules don't look nearly as bad. Your photo is of the bottom, which would have been sitting in the water. I guess it had to have been high enough to make it over the clear plastic covers, then when the water receded it just sat and stewed in the cover. I don't recall those plastic covers having any holes or anything in them.

All the modules in the same condition? I'd guess if any were to survive it would be the top one in the front hump. The water would only be able to infiltrate through the bottom of the pack, and only until pressure equalized, so I don't think the whole pack would have filled with water, and almost certainly not up above the top of the modules. Speculation, but should be a good guess.

Wow, I am a bit surprised by the extent of the damage ... granted the vehicle was submerged in salt water,
but I would expect Tesla to make improvements in the waterproofing design going forward to better protect the batteries.
What happens when you drive through a flooded intersection and underestimate the depth of the water?

... :cursing:... HOW IN THE WORLD IS ANY OF THIS TESLA'S FAULT!? HE LITERALLY RIPPED THE TOP COVER IN HALF!?
