Roof glass change, slightly different appearance, Tesla changes suppliers?

I know everyone loves talking about glass......

Finally got a break from work travel so I am getting my top glass replaced under warranty. ~Nov '18 factory install was shifted to one side enough that it was out of spec, though my initial concerns were long term stress and that the Tesla roof rack likely wouldn't install correctly. Thankfully it was shifted enough to be "out of spec" so I didn't have to plead my case.

Anyway, when I showed up today for my appointment to get it fixed they said there are over 100 roof glass on backorder (rear glass no stock issues) and that the part is going through a supplier change/revision.

My appointment obviously went nowhere (even through they scheduled it, sigh) but once it comes in I'm curious to see if there are any differences. Maybe I'll get "orange" glass again after all.

I just recently got my rear glass replaced under warranty. Being an early VIN, I was afraid that the new glass wouldn't have the orange tint. They let me know that there's only one variant being produced right now and they don't know if it'll have the orange glow or not.

Turns out it does! Not sure if it's just because my previous glass had it or if it's back.

rock flying in the highway.. broke the windshield and the roof. Yes it sucked...

Replacement glass seemed different, more “reddish”. I asked and they said it’s now a new supplier.

Seems the same from inside just looks different from outside the car

The glass is functionally the same

Different suppliers use slightly different UV rejection and IR rejection coatings that can look different colors (especially when wet) with no functional difference

Yes, what he said. This color change in UV/IR glass has been discussed at length in other threads. Same properties though. Interesting they have a new supplier (or maybe gone back to a former) all the same.

Some people prefer the reddish color, other the yellow/black. Have to say I love coming out and seeing my car in the morning when there's rainwater or condensation on it :). Hey, OP how about a photo of yours wet so we can see what's being shipped. Can't really tell from the photo posted.

My car was built on 5/4/19 and both top panels came with a dark gray tint. I had my rear panoramic glass replaced back in June due to a hairline crack. The new glass has the orange effect while wet. I personally don’t mind it but I wish it did match the front panel. I mean even when not wet one can tell it has a more bronze hue and matches neither the front glass or the side windows I originally had tinted. Anyhow, I spoke to several service centers across South Florida and was told the current supplier is producing them in this manner. They also utilize the same part number regardless of the supplier, so there is no effort made to find a match for the original.
