Tesla Model 3 First Drive Reviews

[my comment in Edmunds article]

BS review. I have not had even one of the issues that are mentioned here. Not one. And my Vin is 13k.

And I call this review BS because the efficiency they see is 330 wh/mile. That is ridiculous and no where the kind of consumption what I am seeing and in fact every one of the owners in youtube reviews or on Teslamotorsclub forum. I am hard pressed to to go even more than 250 wh/mile and my average is around 235 wh/mile - going with the traffic at 70+ and AC on. I can easily go 330 miles just keeping up with traffic and AC on. That is an amazing amount of range.

Yeah that was a terrible hit-piece of an article. But in terms of consumption, I have seen 218 Wh/m when driving it like a prius, but what is the fun in that. I easily get 350 Wh/m as well when having fun, but in the Model X that would be north of 450 Wh/m as well. Especially when you know that electricity is essentially free because you put solar on your home which pays for itself from just home consumption but produces enough to also charge the car.

There should have been some Performance deliveries.

Why isn't there any real VIDEO-Test-Drive or VIDEO-Driving review from customers. Are the Tesla-Youtubers on holiday? What about DragTimes?

Maybe i missed another thread, but please if someone has it, post a link to real Testdrives.

Did the Model 3 test drive Saturday. Love it! Of course it's more nimble than our Model X, but it feels even lighter than my old BMW 335i did. The suspension and steering felt perfect to me. The size, also perfect. I got used to the single display immediately. The rear air was nice and cold for the wife sitting back there. Visibility is very good. This is a great car! I can't wait to get mine!

Here's a review done by Transport Evolved using my Model 3. While I don't fully agree with her on everything, the review is mostly positive, well done and beautifully shot.

I completely disagree with her conclusion that the Model 3 isn't revolutionary. There's nothing on the market that's even close to the Model 3. It's the car that convinced me to go electric and not buy a BMW 3-Series.

I was waiting for her to mention that even though the Model 3 is $35k, you can't buy that now. But instead she went with the you won't want the $35k version which isn't a great argument for why the car isn't revolutionary.

Makes you wonder if she was intentionally off the mark.

I just test drove the Model 3 all wheel drive. This one was also a full performance with all options.

It is way better than the Model S.

I had ample headroom.

I could easily see out the windshield without the upper part obstructing my view.

The mirrors were tolerable, and went to the position I’m accustomed to driving in.

The leg room is ok.

The seat was comfortable: it was soft and did not jut in on the sides hurting my rib cage like the Model S seats. The headrest does jut too far forward which is horrible for the neck and posture, but I’ll have to bend that back somehow myself.

The sound insulation is good, more like my old Mercedes (quiet) than my Model S (noisy). That surprised me because Tesla used to swear up and down that the Model S was quiet inside even though that’s patently false, so I assumed Tesla wasn’t going to fix their sound insulation.

I love the white interior. Perfect. My artistic tastes honor my father (an artist himself, a painter) who said I should bring light into my life. This expression of that was beautiful to me in every way.

Handling was sure. The front did not drag the car around like a snake going back and forth like it did on my Model S; it complemented the all wheel drive very well. I tried two turns, and the car turned through them splendidly.

I took some extra bumpy roads. I went slow and fast on the same road, and I did notice what people are talking about with the bumpier ride, however my main concern is how it affects my brain in my head, my spinal cord, and my organs, on longer drives or when I work full time 60 miles away. During the test drive I didn’t experience any of those types of pains. I think the Model S slightly transmitted less bumpiness, but the Model S bumps were sharper and more damaging to health; give me 6 months commuting in the Model 3 and I could either be great or screaming in agony, so I have no idea. One problem I had with the Mercedes is that its air ride did have a sort of sharp feel to it. I am optimistic but not sure the Model 3 might be ok for me.

The test drive was short.

I think people from Monterey area are rude, and Donald Trump is polite, loving, and nice, but I think that has to do with a difference of life view: the difference between socialism which seeks to establish slave master relationships in every encounter which I automatically reject and end up hating the people doing that, and capitalists who genuinely love independence and enjoy the necessary embrace of life that includes fair competition and stark discussions on improvement which I relish. I got the salesman to shut up a few times, so I was able to enjoy the car and learn about it enough. This goes to confirm I would enjoy owning my own Model 3 much more.

Jesus H Christos this car is sweet! I am renting a Turo model 3 in the northeast right now...I was at the model 3launch and knew it would be huge, but after finally driving this car I’m shocked by how good it is! This version is a rwd 3:

Buttershrimp observations:
1). If you don’t like this car or are underwhelmed by it then it is obvious that you are an underwhelming human being.
2) user interface screen clarity and steering wheel controls must make their way to the s and x soon
3) steering wheel is great

A round-up of recent Performance Model 3 professional reviews:

Business Insider: I just drove the $78,000 high-performance Model 3 — here's why it's my new favorite Tesla

“I've driven every Tesla the company has built, and my longtime favorite is the original Roadster, no longer in production.
Well, it was my favorite. That honor now goes to the P3D.

“What we have here, admiring ladies and gents and drop-jawed children, is the complete package. Beautiful outside, cool as heck inside, and a car that gets your pulse pounding when you step on it. I'm crazy about this thing. It's pure joy with four wheels and four doors.”

Jalopnik: https://jalopnik.com/2018-tesla-model-3-performance-heres-what-we-thought-1828067979

Kristen Lee: “The feeling was very fast, yes, but also elastic. Like we were using big rubber bands to shoot ourselves into the horizon. The lack of gear shifts also adds to this sensation.

All you get is an increased, high-pitched whining noise, unrelenting forward propulsion and then suddenly the whole cabin is giggling manically.”

Mike Ballaban: “The steering is downright lively compared to virtually any new car on the road, and despite weighing ever so slightly more than SpaceX’s Big F_ing Rocket—I’m being hyperbolic but it’s still a hefty 4,000 pounds—it was somehow both nimble and comfortable. It’s stupid fast, comfortable, and the rear window crawls all the way up its ass and over the back seats. What’s not to like?”

MotorTrend: 2018 Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor Performance Review: First Taste - Motor Trend

“In maybe 120 wheel revolutions, a high-performance hierarchy has been rattled. The European marques perennially atop the sport sedan podium are about to have trapdoors release beneath them. Although nothing has fundamentally changed with the car's steering or suspension (besides an imperceptible but CG-lowering 5-10mm drop in ride height), the dual motor and all-wheel drive give the compact Tesla a tensed, hair-trigger potency for leaping ahead or around whatever's in the way. It's pure jungle cat.”

Road and Track: Tesla Model 3 Performance: Track Test

"Tesla's dual-motor, 450-horsepower Model 3 Performance has a new Track Mode. We took it to Lime Rock Park to see how much hot-lapping this electric sport sedan can really handle."

Agreed!

I should add: I tried the heater, and in my opinion, it was better than the heater in my Model S. I kept having to turn it down cooler, since I had it too hot. My problem with the heater in the Model S is that it wasn't hot enough.

I forgot to test the foot warmth factor; I didn't turn the output to bottom vent only. I had it in middle mode. To me this is a major point, but I forgot to check. I had a slight cooling of the feet, but it was not an overly cold day, and as I said, I forgot to even try putting it in bottom vent only mode. It was probably 50 to 60 degrees (foggy).

Model 3 is so good. I’m on my second day driving it and it is ridiculous how good it is, and I’m driving a LR RWD. It’s tight and fun but incredibly graceful on autopilot, mirroring and observation by @jimmy_d that the smaller size gives more room in the lane and gives the driver greater confidence in the system, particularly with respect to lane keeping.

The non performance variant, is undoubtedly more soulful than the model s non performance models. I’m not yet onto the picadollos, there are weaknesses where I didn’t anticipate, for instance the model s seats are actually a little tiny bit better (I thought it would be the opposite), but overall is phenomenal
