Remember way back... yesterday when that Jalopnik writer chastised Tesla for using Nico for the ‘Ring instead of a more specialized driver? Why, it’s almost as if they rushed to judgement before actually finding out if anything they were saying was true...
Heck, remember way, way, way back to when the official word from Nurburgring was that "all slots are taken, no chance this year"?

If Tesla's Planning a Nurburgring Lap, They Forgot to Tell the Nurburgring (Updated)
Road & Track said:
A representative for the German track told Road & Track in an email that "Tesla did not send us a record request and did not rent an exclusive time slot." The representative further said that the Nordschleife is "fully booked through the season," and added, "I think that there is no availability for Tesla to set up a record attempt in the next days."

According to this article Jalopnik is a corrupt outlet where advertisers are granted favorable coverage (@tinm: another outlier I'm sure):

Gizmodo Media Staff Enraged at New CEO’s ‘Insane’ Direction

"Two people with knowledge told The Daily Beast that in a private meeting, Spanfeller reviewed the coverage of Lexus with the editor-in-chief of Jalopnik, a car-focused website, to ensure that its stories did not discourage the luxury automaker from advertising with G/O sites."

Just wondering, is there any notable Tesla FUD on Gizmodo? Might be part of the same scheme of rewarding advertisers with positive coverage and blackmailing non-advertisers with negative coverage.

BTW., Gizmodo's new CEO Spanfeller is a former Forbes executive. Small world.

So, is this the source of the gunshot panic around Times Sq, NYC some time ago? It was said to have been motorcycles backfiring.

I doubt it but don’t really know. It might result in a backfire but mostly just makes the engine “miss” and run unevenly. It is unpleasant but better than ruining the engine due to overheating. I don’t think this is a problem with electrical cycles.

Was probably true at that time - the big lie was the claim that Tesla couldn't possibly get track time, because the racing calendar is full for this year.

Then for September 21 an entirely new slot was opened, apparently for Tesla.

The unexpected magic of Nürburgring officials having control over the schedule of an only partially utilized, profit oriented racing track. A shocking development that no fair journalist covering Tesla could possibly have anticipated! :D

Quite right. And, Tesla getting an official lap time doesn't count against the Taycan's unofficial record because... look, SQUIRREL!

Here's a video from yesterday, the Plaid prototype can be seen at 2:48, the Taycan at 5:00:

(Does anyone here have time to load that video into a video editor and compare the frame count between the Model S and the Taycan run? Both were driving that corner aggressively and were accelerating out of it hard, were not hindered by other cars and the camera vantage is identical - so time measurement with ~0.1 sec accuracy should be possible.)

BTW., a funny detail: the video's author, who is I believe an experienced Nürburgring enthusiast, apparently missed the first two seconds of the Plaid prototype's run - because I think the Tesla approached so quietly! :D

Not the same image but similar theme. I've had this shirt for years now (only with a Model X on it) and amazing how many people don't get it. Model 3 Evolve By Mad Hungarian Products from Mad Hungarian's EVOLVEwear | Teespring

I have that one already.

Seriously, I do. That and the "S3XY" one from years ago displaying a Model Y with falcon wing doors.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to see raw gasoline injected into an electric cycle either.

I firmly believe you can judge a website by the quality of the people who visit/comment there. By that metric, Jalopnik is pure garbage.

For those following the Nürburgring race, the key dates to watch are September 18, September 21 and September 25, because those are the days on which Tesla has purchased exclusive track time (longest slot about ~2 hours), according to:

Tesla has built an improvised repair, maintenance and recharging facility right on Nürburgring premises:

Tesla is testing and tuning on the Ring every day, and their driver is Thomas Mutsch, who is not as well known as Nico Rosberg, but is considered a Nürburgring specialist, who achieved several official Nürburgring lap records.

Tesla is certainly taking this very seriously.

If the article is accurate then Tesla's earliest Nürburgring record attempt (or at least the first hot lap) can be expected on September 18, Wednesday next week - weather permitting.

A couple of Superchargers at the Ring would be a smart move, I can imagine a lot of Tesla owners fancying their cars around the circuit now...

That Model S looked very stable indeed!
