People forget that it's not just Model 3s on these ships. There were nearly 2k "Teslas", just like Glovis Captain. 2-3k per ship is typical.

Yes, they've already had one ship reach China already - it went to Tianjin, not Shanghai. The next ship to China, the "solar hybrid" ship Emerald Ace, reaches Tianjin on Sunday. Then the Golden Ray arrives in Shanghai on Thursday. They seem to be alternating between Tianjin and Shanghai, which makes good sense.

OT, but abstractly related and interesting...
Australian coal shipments are being delayed in Chinese ports 45 days, reported our ABC news yesterday. Aust govt has recently been vocal on Huawei, and also pointed the finger at China over hacking of govt servers.
It seems they can unload quickly when the goods are desirable enough.

Car dealership group AutoNation (AN -3.7%) is down today following an earnings and sales miss. This morning on CNBC, rather than crediting Tesla and its direct sales model for taking away business, their outgoing CEO dissed Elon.

But he clearly knows what he's talking about. Just listen to his amazing pronounciation of the word "autonomous" ~30s in. UM-TOM-NUS.

Warning, Fred link: Volkswagen announces all-electric version of its Multivan

How a large van with 78kWh battery will get to 400km is beyond me...

The updated T6.1 Multivan will offer an all-electric version of the vehicle in conjunction with German tuning company ABT. The release notes detailed a few specs:

“With an output of 82 kW / 112 PS and a battery capacity of either 38.8 kWh or 77.6 kWh, driving ranges of more than 400 km (NEDC) will be possible – making the vehicle ideal for commercial duty in the urban world.”

These videos will be much better in a few years ..... it reeks of the same stuff I heard coming out of cell phone makers during the time when Apple was eating their lunch.

Cheers to the longs ....

Well for starters they are still using NEDC which has been deprecated because of how bad it was at estimates:

driving ranges of more than 400 km (NEDC) will be possible – making the vehicle ideal for commercial duty in the urban world.”

Why start using WLTP for anything you don't actually have to? Sure it will look really bad when they actually release the car and the reported WLTP range is much lower, but whatever, that will probably never happen.

Elon Musk is 'almost unethical,' says outgoing AutoNation CEO — CNBC

Coming from a used car salesman? Ok. Funny. How low can CNBC go? Looks like Tesla has taken their bussiness and he’s sad about. First they laugh and poke fun, then as they loose bussiness and get disrupted, they throw insults. Classy.

First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. And then they attack you and want to burn you. And then they build monuments to you. -- Nicholas Klein (not Gandhi) – 1918

He is just repeating what he has heard - but I think most of the people even on TMC are skeptical level 4 FSD will be feature complete by end of '19. I'd say even level 3 - can safely commute but need to be able to take over within minutes when needed - would be a tremendous achievement and will propel TSLA to 700+.

Which makes Toyota's double-down on huge grilles hilarious.

They’re actively trying to prepare everyone for the world of Hydrogen cars, with their needed even more enormous grills. It’ll be interesting to see how long they take to realize they’re on a dead-end path.

My guess is - misattribution to Gandhi is because it fits what happened with him so well - though the most commonly used quote is "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win”.

MISATTRIBUTED: 'First They Ignore You, Then They Laugh at You....' Quote

Tesla is actually in the 3rd stage - they are fighting Tesla - though mostly through FUD.

It is for the nation to return an effective answer by organised non-co-operation and change ridicule into respect. Ridicule is like repression. Both give place to respect when they fail to produce the intended effect.
