Tesla Unionization

Now we know what they striking workers have been doing for the last month. 🤣 Going through the regulations and finding cases where Tesla needs to make some improvements.

I'm sure Tesla will resolve those issues quickly, and across all of their service centers in the country.

Here's the Finnish union announcement, directly from themselves:

I doubt it has any effect. If you look at the map, Finland is not very logical route to get cars from Belgium to Sweden.

Looks to me that the Swedish Unions are running what we used to call in America, a Protection racket. Mercants were told that if they did not pay a protection fee to the mobsters, their shops would be burnt out and the shopkeeper beat up or murdered. The poor merchants had no choice, but to pay the ransom. Salvation came from the Government, who busted up and imprisoned the racketeers.

Sweden is looking the other way when Union Thugs conspire with other Unions to make Tesla's life miserable if they do not Unionize their workforce.
In a free country, the workers could freely decide for themselves if they wish to join a Union or not. Workers are free to chose to work in a Union or non-Union shop. They can easily quit at Tesla and hire on at Volvo if they wish.

In support of a free and open workforce, I would not be surprised if Tesla did not choose to close off Sweded to their cars. Tesla has the power to be a disruptive company for the elimination of coercion in that Country.
This doesn’t appear to be about employees right to be in the union or not. That seems to have been respected.

What’s happening is a business’s choice to be in a union or not. It isn’t lawfully required that companies have a collective agreement in Sweden except it appears Tesla. That’s what this is about.

As an additional countermeasure, Tesla could refuse to continue sending Swedish satelites into space via SpaceX rockets and black out Starlink from that Country as well.
No, Tesla can't do that. Tesla has no control over SpaceX or Starlink. And I highly doubt that Elon would start sympathy actions against Sweden from his other companies in retaliation of the Union actions.

So glad the unions are deciding. Did the union take a membership vote before deciding? If so, then good on them and I’d support the action as a ‘will of the people’. Dumb people, but still their choice to make. If not, then shame on the union and dumb membership for allowing the union to have that kind of power.

One thing I find strange. The union wants Tesla to have "a collective agreement". I think they are implying that Tesla should have their collective agreement. But what if Tesla makes their own collective agreement? Something like this:

Tesla Collective agreement:
+We will only make fully electric cars
+All the points here: https://www.ceconline.com/PDF/Tesla-Anti-Handbook-Handbook.pdf

With nothing about union members having board seats, sending money to IF Metal owned pension funds(Fora) etc. Just basic Tesla stuff. Would this qualify as a collective agreement?

In the middle of the battle – Tesla gets reprimanded for shortcomings

Published 7 Dec 2023 at 17:07

Tesla's battle with the trade union IF Metall continues.

At the same time, the electric car giant is being reprimanded by the Swedish Work Environment Authority - which found six deficiencies at a workshop in Gothenburg.

"If you do not remedy the deficiencies and risks, we may decide on an injunction or ban," the report states.

Several unions have gone on strike in sympathy with the union IF Metall, which demands that Tesla introduce a collective agreement. Union-affiliated workers refuse to work at the electric car giant's workplaces around Sweden - including at workshops that service the cars.

While the conflict continues, Tesla has been reprimanded for deficiencies and risks at its showroom and workshop at Hisingen in Gothenburg, which the news agency Siren was the first to report.

During an inspection on November 20, a total of six deficiencies were found. Now the Swedish Work Environment Agency demands measures - otherwise Tesla risks being fined.

Deficiencies around risks and chemical substance

On site at Tesla's premises in Hisingen, it was discovered that there was no control sign at the device for pressurization, signs at an escape route and that an employee driving a truck did not have a written permit. It was also judged that there was no risk assessment when using the chemical hazard substance betaseal and that employees who used it had neither been allowed to undergo appropriate medical examinations nor had certificates of training on it.

The Swedish Work Environment Authority requires Tesla to remedy the deficiencies and reconnect by the end of January next year at the latest.

According to the Siren news agency, an inspection was also carried out at a Tesla workshop and store in Mölndal last week. Even after it, measures were required around a compressed air container.

So, if you know what those things are (raises hand with a degree in chemistry), that's all pretty minor infractions. Put up a few signs as required, make sure the guy driving the truck on property (notice it wasn't on the roads) has the proper paperwork, etc.

"Nitpicking" comes to mind to describe this. Nothing at all there would be graded out here in the states by OSHA as more than minor in nature.

Sounds more like IF Metall asked some of their gov buddies to run an "inspection" to try to find something they could leverage. Didn't come up with much there.

Yeah its silly really.. they'd have to unload the ferry at Hanko, then trailer the cars some 800km to Tornio to get to sweden across land..

Interestingly enough Sweden was one of the few nations not to promote mass immunization during Covid and came out just fine. They chose not to go along with the herd.

But with the IF Metall/Tesla imbroglio it's a go along with the herd type mentality.
That is not what their strategy was (remember, they initiated their strategy long before there even _were_ vaccines), and followup studies showed they fared markedly worse than the other Nordic countries, and did not achieve herd immunity. But this is getting mighty OT. Apologies for the OT-ness.

...The cost in terms of infections and deaths of this pandemic in Sweden has been larger in some other more densely populated and more centrally located countries, yet is still markedly higher than in the other Nordic countries (Rizzi et al., 2021; Nanda et al., 2021) and long-term health and societal effects cannot be ignored. Several studies have shown that the human costs would have been significantly lower in Sweden if stricter measures had been implemented, without more detrimental impacts on the economy (Kamerlin and Kasson, 2020; Sjödin et al., 2020; Sheridan et al., 2020; Born et al., 2021b; Amiri, 2021; Born et al., 2021a). The Swedish strategy has not shown to be superior in any measurable aspect compared to the Nordic neighbours or internationally (Balmford et al., 2020, 2020k; Braithwaite et al., 2021; Bjorklund and Ewing, 2020). This Swedish laissez-faire strategy has had a large human cost for the Swedish society. However, relying on public responsibility seemed to have worked to some extent as a consequence of the Swedish high trust in authorities.

Yes it is getting off topic, my apologies for bringing it up.

Reasonable people who are actually interested in the workplace conditions would have led with this, rather that launch a full-on assault to hamper business being the first volley. 🤷‍♂️

By releasing this now it makes IF Metall seem even more absurd and desperate than they already had.

It could close down the Swedish Supercharger network and ban all those with Swedish passports from employment at any Tesla facility.

Elon would say to have an open and fair election and see which way the current employees would choose...Let the chips fall as they may.
I believe this would be called by the Swedish model a 'sympathy lockout' 🤔

In seriousness, it's not a great way to negotiate/build business, but you're right, it would be a reciprocal action, Tesla is not currently playing the same games that the unions are... Knowing that they could theoretically do that puts this conflict in perspective, notice how much restraint is happening...
